  1. Tanya, Your journey is similar to mine. I figured out first that I probably had celiac disease, and I had my son tested because he had the same symptoms. He tested positive for celiac, and then I called my mom because she also had the same symptoms. She refused to believe she had celiac because she didn't want to give up eating bread. However, after...
  2. Oh....I've been there and done that. I'm so sorry you found out firsthand how dangerous prepared foods can be. I got cc'd on Sunday when I wanted to treat myself to something special--I bought some ginger snap cookies from Trader Joe's. They're supposed to be gluten free (at least, that's what the package says), but I was sicker than a dog on Monday.....
  3. Anabananakins, Thanks for the great advice! I love finding new gluten-free products to try...and I know exactly which shortbread cookies you're referring to: Butter Finger Pure Butter Shortbread Cookies. I discovered them on my last trip to Australia, and I ended up bringing home eight boxes with me so that I could share them with my mom and son (who...
  4. I live in California in the U.S., but I'll be visiting my daughter in North Bondi in early November (visited in September last year, too). I'm wondering--is the gluten-free food in the freezer section well marked? Is there a special section actually? I can't wait to try the pies! I haven't eaten pie in nearly eight years....and will probably go crazy...
  5. While you're there, you might ask to be tested for vitamin deficiencies. Your symptoms sound a lot like a number of Vitamin B deficiencies (especially B12, which is a common deficiency in people with celiac). If you ARE deficient in B12, ask for B12 injections. Good luck!
  6. If it turns out that you have celiac, it would be wise of your doctor to order B12 shots for you, because you may not be able to absorb B12 naturally for a while. Some of us are on lifetime B12 shots. As for the periods, yes, I oftentimes went for long periods without having them. However, I also had the reverse happen--I bled for two years straight just...
  7. I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling better! Yay! And I'm also glad that you're educating your doctors--that may make a huge difference in other people's lives.
  8. I'm sorry to hear that you're having these troubles, and I do understand about the problems of socializing in college without the benefit of going to the cafeteria. My daughter's college was the same way--no admittance to the cafeteria unless you've paid for a plan. I would like to see colleges handle this differently. Have you considered writing to the...
  9. I just wanted to add that if you plan to breastfeed your baby, what you eat can change the flavor of your breastmilk. My babies didn't like my eating spicy dishes (chili and Mexican food) or chocolate. You might wish to do a little research on which foods tend to affect the taste of breastmilk and go from there.
  10. I do think you're on to something...and it IS possible that you have celiac. May I suggest a genuinely perfect book for you? It's called, "Primal Body, Primal Mind." I think you will find the explanations for your condition very plausible...and you will be able to lose weight and keep it off for good. I cannot tell you how much healthier I feel now, and...
  11. By any chance, did you have a sore throat beforehand? I only ask because it sounds a bit like Rheumatic Fever. Your skin can be affected as well as your joints. I know--I've had it twice.
  12. Are you eating adequate fat? With celiac, we tend to have problems absorbing fat-soluble vitamins. I now feel a lot better eating a paleo/primal diet that requires that I eat a lot of meat and saturated fats. I've lost 15 pounds in the past seven weeks, and I feel great. My vitamin absorption was terrible...and I'm hoping that's improved now that I don...
  13. ...or, hopefully, a stomach flu. There's been one going around here in California lately.
  14. One thing you should know before seeing the dermatologist is that most dermatologists have absolutely NO idea how to biopsy for DH. Invariably, they'll biopsy a lesion itself, and that will result in a false-negative. You must insist that he/she biopsy the clear skin just adjacent to a lesion, NOT the lesion itself. You might try reading some of the articles...
  15. But...please know that I'm 54 years old and wasn't diagnosed with celiac until I was 47. You look much younger, so perhaps your neuropathy will improve. Every case is different...
  16. Yes, definitely eliminate iodine! It can be found in seafood, iodized salt, dairy products, and asparagus. Once you eliminate BOTH gluten and iodine, you should feel/see a difference very soon if you do, in fact, have Dermatitis Herpetiformis. Good luck!
  17. My joint problems have pretty much disappeared--they only reappear when I get accidentally glutened. As for neuropathy, I'm afraid that mine never got better (sorry!). However, the brain fog did go away once I was entirely gluten free. Everyone is different in this regard. Just do your best to eat a clean, gluten-free diet....and be happy that some, if...
  18. It's probably the xanthum gum or the guar gum. Trust me....
  19. I absolutely love their cinnamon-sugar donuts! They taste just like the ones my mom used to make. I tried their maple ones and got a horrible migraine--I'm assuming that they must use grapefruit juice in their recipe for that one. I react with a migraine with even a touch of grapefruit present.
  20. I would strongly suggest that you be tested for Vitamin B-12 deficiency. Whenever I'm experiencing low Vitamin B-12, I feel as though I'm gasping to breathe, and I get heart palpitations. Many of your symptoms sound nutrient related, so your doctor should really be running a full panel on you. You may be low in Vitamin D, potassium, magnesium, folic acid...
  21. What exactly are you craving that you can't have in gluten-free form? The only thing that I still crave is a croissant...since there is no gluten-free version. However, all of my other favorite things--donuts, pizza, and baguettes--have fairly good gluten-free equivalents. Do you miss French bread? Against the Grain Gourmet makes great French bread baguettes...
  22. I'm so very sorry you were "poisoned." Gluten seems to act like poison with so many of us with celiac. I wish there were something I could say to make you feel better....but I know that you just have to get through the worst of it before that can happen. I fully understand what you're going through...and I hope you start feeling better soon. Keep...
  23. I agree with every word of what GlutenFreeManna has stated. If you can't afford the test, then, by all means, go gluten free and see what happens. If you feel better, you have your answer--you either have celiac or gluten sensitivity. Either way, the treatment is the same. I sincerely hope that gluten IS your problem, because I would like you to get...
  24. LOL! Thanks for making my day!
  25. Yes, good question--what did you eat? Did it have xanthan gum or guar gum in it? Did you eat something with grains...and I mean any grains?
