Something that I've learned through experience is that being glutened either by spicy food or food with peppers (sometimes the peppers themselves are canned ones containing gluten) can be calamitous. This has happened three times during the past seven years, and each time I became extremely ill. In my case, a lot of damage was done to my intestinal lining...

ARCHIVED Blood Tests And Symptoms
rosetapper23 replied to Matt M.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure about the bloodwork, but the physical symptoms you describe are commonly associated with celiac disease. If your doctor doesn't listen to you and order at least two of the four types of celiac tests, then move on to another doctor. Unfortunately, very few doctors even know that a minimum of two different types of lab tests should be done to... -

In the end, the safest chocolates I've found are from See's Candies. They're Butterscotch Squares are to die for! See's went entirely gluten free a few years ago, but their decorations are NOT gluten free (e.g., sugar flowers and such on the Easter eggs). -

Love2travel, I tried the Curamin, too, for major pain (after a car accident), and it helped me through that hard time. Because I've had a good response to Dr. Christopher's Tissue and Bone and Dr. Christopher's Joint Formula, my pain is kept at a minimum, so I don't need to buy the Curamin for myself anymore. I do, however, keep some in the cupboard... -
ARCHIVED Please Tell Me I'm Doing The Right Thing.
rosetapper23 replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your mom needs to educate herself more on celiac rather than relying on you to explain something that is so necessary to protect your children. However, in the interim (since she SHOULD do some research on celiac), you might explain to her that if your children have celiac, harm may be occurring, though silently, at this time. For example, they could be... -

Love2travel, I just realized from reading another one of your posts that your spelling of certain words indicates that you probably don't live in the U.S. If you feel that you would like to try the Curamin, it costs about $32.00 with a coupon for a local health store, and I would be happy to purchase some and send it to you. If you happen to be an Aussie... -
ARCHIVED Ot- What Makes You Cry?

I, too, cried over the miscarriages and years of infertility....but I cried at the eventual births of both of my children and many times over the years when they accomplished something wonderful or became injured or ill. I cried more than I ever thought I could when I was diagnosed with breast cancer because I thought I'd die without seeing my children graduate... -
ARCHIVED Son Tested Negative But Has All Symptoms
rosetapper23 replied to leo71's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Test him again--remember, celiac must be triggered. If celiac exists in the family, all family members should be tested yearly. However, in your son's case, even if he tests negative, a trial gluten-free diet should determine whether or not he is gluten sensitive. You're a good mom--your son is lucky! -

ARCHIVED Is Gluten Free Ever Easy?
rosetapper23 replied to glutenfreewifey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I, too, stressed out about cooking gluten-free meals when I was first diagnosed. However, it turned out that I liked my own family recipes more...and I could easily make them gluten free. In fact, just about the only ingredient that needs to be changed out is the flour or pasta. Everything else is naturally gluten free. When I bake, I add xanthan gum... -
Yes, celiac is definitely hereditary. My mother, uncle, aunt, son, daughter, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews have it in my family alone. After I was diagnosed, I spread the word--and, lo and behold, a LOT of people in my family ended up having it. It makes family gatherings a very safe place to be, though, when it comes to celebrating with food...

ARCHIVED New To Celiac And To The Forum
rosetapper23 replied to Sarunski's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Peter is absolutely correct! You MUST remain gluten free for life, and many of us report very heightened negative responses when we accidentally eat gluten. You can certainly use me as an example of this. I've been gluten free for more then seven years, and five years ago I was accidentally glutened. The result was that I had to undergo intravenous iron... -
I agree that you should be retested for celiac--remember, celiac has to be triggered, and you may not have had it a few years ago. It's also possible that you have gluten sensitivity, rather than celiac, so even if the tests come back negative, you might consider trying a gluten-free diet to see if it alleviates your symptoms. By the way, although you don...

Your doctors need to heed the advice of celiac expert Dr. Alessio Fasano. For the past few years, he has lectured on how to best diagnose celiac disease. He says that if your bloodwork is positive, your genetic tests are positive, you feel better when eliminating gluten, and your symptoms return when gluten is reintroduced, then there is NO REASON for an...

I know of another person who also worked in a bakery for many years and who developed celiac disease (of course, it's unknown if the exposure caused it). He is so super-sensitive to gluten, he has to wear a mask just to go outside because of the possibility of flour wafting from restaurants and bakeries. Currently, his life is pretty Hellish, and he's trying...

You know, I probably skipped right by the gallbladder concerns because I have none, personally. Since there can be issues with eating fat when a person has gallbladder disease or has had the gallbladder removed, it appears that you'll have to delve more deeply into the book....and perhaps even e-mail the author with your questions on this. As for my diet... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge Misery (Newbie Here)
rosetapper23 replied to pain*in*my*gut's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I discovered that gluten was the culprit, I gave it up...and never looked back. I did take my son in to be tested, and he tested positive for celiac. That was enough for me and my doctor. My gastroenterologist said I had the most classic celiac case he'd ever seen, and he apologized for all the doctors who had missed the obvious signs since I was... -
ARCHIVED Nightmares About Gluten
rosetapper23 replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get those kinds of dreams quite frequently. Usually, I take a bite out of a sandwich or pizza...and then realize it isn't gluten free. I freak out and wake up immediately. I always have a terrified feeling, and it takes me a while to go back to sleep. -

rosetapper23 replied to L.O.C.T.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You will undoubtedly receive quite a few responses on this topic--many people have posted here complaining of neurological problems associated with celiac. It was only recently that neurological issues such as bipolar, seizures, migraines, ADHD, schizophrenia, depression, memory glitches, etc., were discovered to be linked to celiac. Apparently, some/many... -

Dan, I hear your diet disappointment loud and clear, and I understand it. I was diagnosed with celiac over seven years ago and have fastidiously followed a gluten-free diet; however, I also gained about 25 pounds and was truly confused why my "healthy" diet wasn't helping me lose weight. Heck, I didn't eat baked goods anymore, and my diet was balanced... -
