ARCHIVED "bodybuilding" Steroids And Celiacs Symptoms?
rosetapper23 replied to KoreBB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Okay, I'm going to take a stab at this. First, no, I don't think that the steroids are causing you to feel fewer symptoms, since they're anabolic steroids and not a steroid like prednisone, which "might" alleviate an autoimmune response. My guess is that the pizza you ate had a crust that was made of a sourdough base. I read an article last year that scientifically... -
ARCHIVED New Here...need Advice!
rosetapper23 replied to Sunshine79's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Looking at your list of symptoms, I notice several that I had a particularly hard time with--especially the paresthesia, muscle pain, and bruising. You should definitely get your B12 checked if it wasn't, because it can be responsible for paresthesia, numbness, and tingling in your feet and hands. As for the muscle pain and bruising, I'm sure many people... -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Free At Others Houses
rosetapper23 replied to Ally1978's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have one important rule: Never, never, NEVER eat at other people's homes unless they have a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. I say the same thing about potlucks and picnics. I simply bring my own food to everything and explain (apologize) in advance to the hostess or host. Sometimes I feel as though people's feelings are somewhat hurt, but that's not... -
ARCHIVED Is The Prevelance Of Celiacs Only 1:133?
rosetapper23 replied to Jungle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the 1:33 study and the others I've read were based solely on blood tests....but I agree that there are many, many people with gluten sensitivity. -
ARCHIVED Is The Prevelance Of Celiacs Only 1:133?
rosetapper23 replied to Jungle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I believe that one of the reasons for the varying figures is that different populations have been tested for each study. I believe that the 1:133 figure resulted from the grant-funded study that Alessio Fasano did a number of years back that convinced the medical establishment in the U.S. that celiac is common here. That's the largest study that has been... -
ARCHIVED My Mum Might Be Celiac But Wont Get Tested
rosetapper23 replied to MissBonnie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When I was diagnosed, I knew immediately that my mother and son also had the same condition because they'd both exhibited the same symptoms for years. My son tested positive and has been gluten free ever since. My mother told me that she didn't know what I was talking about and claimed that she hadn't had any of the symptoms that she'd complained about... -

ARCHIVED Please Help - So Many Questions
rosetapper23 replied to fairydust81's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My gosh, you sound like a walking advertisement for celiac and Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH)! Have you read some of the postings in the DH forum yet? There may be some threads on how people treat the itching until the rash eventually goes away after going gluten free. You should know, too, that iodine can also exacerbate DH, so you should eliminate iodized... -

ARCHIVED Also Looking For Good Baguett Bread
rosetapper23 replied to shayre's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shayre, Where do you live? Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, there's a gluten-free bakery called Mariposa (perhaps they ship?) that sells excellent baguettes. Also, others on this Forum have mentioned that Against the Grain has great baguettes, too, but I don't believe they're yet in stores West of the Rockies. Could be wrong on that--the company... -

ARCHIVED Recovery Is So Up And Down. Anyone Else Struggle With This?
rosetapper23 replied to MissBonnie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Unfortunately, the journey is different for all of us. It took 18 months on a VERY strict gluten-free diet for me to feel "better." However, cross-contamination occurred from time to time, which caused me to have to receive intravenous iron on a weekly basis (which I have since overcome), receive B12 shots (still getting), and suffer numerous setbacks ... -

ARCHIVED Recent Business Trip To San Francisco
rosetapper23 replied to Gfreeatx's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The next time you visit S.F., another great spot to eat is a little diner called Pica Pica at Valencia and 15th. What's especially outstanding about it (besides the great-tasting food) is that it is an entirely gluten-free establishment, including gluten-free beers. I've eaten there several times, and it's a very safe feeling to know that there will be... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Family Members
rosetapper23 replied to Austin Guy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In my family, my maternal grandmother's father and all four of his brothers died of intestinal cancer. My maternal grandmother had many symptoms of celiac, but I didn't know anything about it back when she was alive. I do know that I, my mother, one of her brothers, one of her sisters, my son, my daughter, one niece, and one nephew have it. That's pretty... -
I also vote for the mayo as being the culprit. Soy in mayo is vicious!! I use Smart Balance now, but I skipped eating mayo for years because of the soy. Since you mentioned just getting a cat, have you checked to see if the cat food you're buying contains gluten? Is there any possibility that you are hyper-sensitive to gluten?

ARCHIVED Celiac Or Gluten Sensitivity Or Neither?
rosetapper23 replied to quandary's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oftentimes, dairy, soy, oats, and corn are eliminated when a person first starts a gluten-free diet, because many people with celiac react badly to them. After three months, you can start adding them back into your son's diet one by one to see if he has any reaction to them. Since he has also suffered from rashes, which might be Dermatitis Herpetiformis... -
ARCHIVED Maybe Celiac Realized Thru Dh
rosetapper23 replied to JandMs Mommy's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I would like to reiterate that iodine needs to be avoided. It is oftentimes found in dairy (except organic), seafood, iodized salt, asparagus, and chips/french fries. I totally understand the mother-in-law problem. My brother's son obviously has celiac (I, my mother, uncle, aunt, son, daughter, niece, and numerous cousins have it), and his symptoms are... -
ARCHIVED Can Celiac Disease Be Intermittent?
rosetapper23 replied to Sarah Alli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
One of the hallmarks of celiac is that symptoms can wax and wane throughout one's ilfetime. There were periods in my life when I felt almost completely well. You might be reacting to more than just gluten, and many people go on an elimination diet that eliminates gluten, dairy, soy, and sometimes corn. I'm sure others will chime in with additional advice... -
ARCHIVED Blurry Vision
rosetapper23 replied to glutenfree4life?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I used to suffer from migraines terribly before I went gluten free, and my hormones also played a large part. I also got auras, but they were the flashing lights type, and I also saw blank holes in my vision. However, I did have one or two ocular migraines which don't come with migraine pain. Instead, it looked like a thick, wavy, colored light across... -
ARCHIVED Blurry Vision
rosetapper23 replied to glutenfree4life?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
While I haven't had the extent of the blurry vision that you appear to have, I've had eyes that seemed dry and blurry so that reading was difficult and painful. It turned out to be a zinc deficiency in my case. However, in your case, I'm a bit worried about the hair coloring. I wonder what's going on... -
ARCHIVED Chest Pains?
rosetapper23 replied to raesue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I tend to get esophageal spasms from time to time, and the pain is in the center of the chest--very intense. I've never linked them to celiac, but the last time I had one, it was about an hour after I ate at a restaurant...and soon I felt as though I'd been glutened. -
ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice

Re IrishHeart's last posting: "5. If you tell your family that it is genetic and you try to educate them, be prepared to be scoffed at--or worse, ignored. Just know, you tried your best to spare them the misery. Then, let it go." Gee, and here I've been beating them with a stick like a pinata until the gluten all falls out!!
