  1. I would suggest that you call the drug manufacturers directly--that's what I always do. Also....are you sure that what you have is acne? I suffered from Dermatitis Herpetiformis on my face and neck for years, and the dermatologists always treated me for acne. The medications never worked and oftentimes inflamed the DH and left scars. If in doubt, you...
  2. I LOVE Sydney! I felt so safe there when I was visiting my daughter....and I'm planning another visit in November. I wish the restaurants in the U.S. could take a lesson from the restaurants there...
  3. There are probably a number of reasons, but I'm just going to take a stab at one of them. Recently, I learned that people with gluten sensitivity or celiac can develop cross-reactions to other grains. From what I understand, after being "glutened" or even right after you're diagnosed with one of these conditions, your body's immune system kind of goes whacky...
  4. "Usually," bright red blood is a result of internal or external hemorrhoids. If the color were black, then we're talking about the stomach or small intestine having something very wrong with them. You should still get the stomach pains checked out...and you can always ask for a stool test.
  5. This has always been an interesting topic for me: Are people with celiac attracted to people of the opposite sex with celiac? Please don't laugh--there's scientific evidence to back this up. At a celiac conference that I attended two years ago in Seattle, Dr. Peter Green, a leading expert on celiac, discussed a study that was done in Italy. It showed...
  6. I can only personally attest to how painful my muscles (and tendons and ligaments) became starting at age 11. The doctors were completely puzzled about the situation, so I suffered for many years from the soreness and occasional bouts of tendinitis. In order to go to school, I had to get up early and soak in a very warm tub of water to relax my muscles...
  7. You may be suffering from a nutritional deficiency. It sounds as though you may be low in either Vitamin B-12 or Manganese. Take a look at this list of symptoms of nutrient deficiencies and toxicities--you'll see that a Manganese deficiency can cause both tinnitus and dizziness: Open Original Shared Link If you test low in Manganese, the chelated...
  8. I no longer buy gluten-free products at Trader Joe's--a lot of their products say, "No gluten-containing ingredients," or some such thing. However, there could still be contamination. Over the years, they've cut way back on gluten-free products and have even replaced some decent gluten-free products with ones that are gluten containing (such as replacing...
  9. Both blood tests and endoscopy results can be iffy. There are four very different blood tests for celiac disease, so you may wish to ask for more testing (or not). As for the endoscopy, the gold standard is to take a minimum of FOUR biopsies, which your doctor didn't do....and sometimes the scope is not long enough to reach the damaged part of the small...
  10. Unfortunately, I'm one of those persons who breaks out ONLY when gluten and iodine are present. I say "unfortunately,' because now that I take thyroid meds that contain iodine, even the smallest amount of gluten contamination causes me to break out in DH....even though I've been on an extremely strict gluten-free diet for more than seven years. For me,...
  11. Since both your husband and you saw improvements in your health, it appears that both of you may be sensitive to gluten (either celiac or gluten sensitivity). As such, you have passed your genes to your daughter, and she also has the condition. Regardless of the tests (which are very unreliable), it's reasonable to assume that all three of you should remain...
  12. Your doctor is sadistic. My doctor pulled the same thing on me--I think it was a control issue. He just wanted to be right and seemed very unconcerned that I was suffering. My ferritin level was at 2! And he still wanted me to continue taking oral iron even though I kept explaining to him that it wasn't working because I couldn't absorb it. When I finally...
  13. I agree with what everyone has said so far, but I wanted to emphasize that if you're eating gluten-free processed foods, you may be reacting to the xanthan gum or one of the other gums used instead of gluten. Lots of us get stomach pain, bloating, and gassiness. I agree that you should try to eat all natural foods until you feel better and then add in some...
  14. What can I say? Doctors are sometimes a piece of work... I wanted to mention, though, that my mother had appendicitis....and we later found out that the surgery was the triggering event for her celiac. You see, with celiac you have to have both the genes and a triggering event. Hopefully, the surgery didn't trigger celiac in your boyfriend....but he...
  15. From personal experience, all you can really do is inform people and encourage them to get tested. When I was diagnosed, I called all of my mother's relatives (uncles, aunts, and cousins). Several of them recognized the symptoms and said, "Yep, sounds like that's what I've got!" One of them is even a nurse....but not a single one of them ended up getting...
  16. I'm so sad for you! When you mentioned the problem with your kitty, I wondered if it was an intestinal lymphoma. I lost a precious kitty to the same disease a few years ago. My heart goes out to you...
  17. All I can tell you is that I read an article a few years back that highlighted a study on this matter. It stated that there is a 70% chance of gluten contamination if a product has been processed on equipment that also processes gluten grains and that there is a 30% chance of gluten contamination if a product has been processed in a plant where gluten grains...
  18. I second that suggestion--chicken or turkey baby food.
  19. As an earlier poster suggested, it may be that you're ingesting iodine. For many of us, if iodine is present, the lesions simply will not heal....and it makes them really itch for me. Make sure that you only use non-iodized salt, avoid all dairy except organic, seafood, and asparagus. After a while, you can try to reintroduce them into your diet...but...
  20. I believe you may be thinking of soy lecithin, not soybean oil. I recently read why people who are intolerant of soybean oil are able to tolerate soy lecithin, and it's the same explanation that you provided for why people should not be intolerant of soybean oil. Personally, I have no problems at all with soy lecithin...but I definitely canNOT tolerate...
  21. I agree with the others--starting the diet a week late shouldn't make a difference. For many of us, the worst damage occurs after we've been on a gluten-free diet for a long time...and we become super-sensitive to the smallest amounts of gluten. Your body may be currently accustomed to a certain level of gluten, and it may not know the difference. Enjoy...
  22. You, like many of us on this forum, have solved your health mysteries yourself. You really don't need a doctor (especially a dermatologist!!) telling you that you're not ill and not able to follow a diet that will help you. Since there are many celiacs in your family, you obviously have celiac or gluten sensitivity. Also, since the rash is clearing up...
  23. Floravita IS an excellent form of iron (though it's expensive), but the amount of iron in it is way too low to help most people with low ferritin due to celiac. I took Floravita for six months before giving up and going with the infusions.
  24. Does it matter what the name of your condition is? You know that gluten is causing your horrible symptoms, and that's really all that's important. Even without a true celiac "diagnosis" (though, it might have been a false-negative...and I believe it was), you can still say that you have gluten sensitivity, which is true. Since you felt so much better without...
  25. Please....speak to your doctor NOW about infusions. Iron anemia causes your cellular oxygenation to be extremely low. If your cellular oxygenation falls below 70% for more than two years, your cells can begin turning cancerous. Unfortunately for me, I was too late--I developed breast cancer only a year after going gluten free. The iron infusions were...
