  1. Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here and disagree with my fellow posters. It doesn't mean that they're wrong--I just disagree. If you read a lot of posts on this forum, you'll see that there are two schools of thought on having the endoscopy. One of the top experts in the world, Dr. Alessio Fasano, has spoken at numerous conferences on this topic,...
  2. For me, the equation was always that the iodine caused the DH to worsen even more than the gluten. Twelve years before I ever discovered I had celiac, I made the connection to iodine when it came to the itching blisters. I found out that if I avoided iodine entirely, I could control the rash. Of course, 12 years later, I discovered the true cause behind...
  3. I've found that I can use any of my baking recipes as long as I use Bob's Red Mill Gluten-Free Flour and 2-4 teaspoons of xanthan gum.
  4. You might try eliminating soy, oats, and iodine, too--if it ends up that you actually have celiac, these three things can be problems for many people who have celiac.
  5. Here's the Website for Against the Grain and their store locator: Open Original Shared Link Unfortunately, it appears that they don't yet distribute their products to California--I'm so bummed!
  6. Have you had your thyroid tested? Before I found out I had Hashimoto's, my brain fog was debilitating.
  7. Mushroom, Was the type of zinc you were taking the chelated form? I had taken regular zinc for months after my foot fractures because I had numerous symptoms of zinc deficiency, but the symptoms didn't improve. Then I read that I should be taking chelated zinc and chelated manganese--and my feet stopped hurting after only a couple of days. The silicon...
  8. If you DO try Udi's again, the way to make it especially soft and yummy is to place a couple of slices into a plastic sandwich bag and leave it in your car for a few hours. Your bread will be steamed to perfection for any type of sandwich. Usually, I just microwave a few slices when I'm in a hurry, but then the bread is a little stale tasting; however,...
  9. Erewhon makes a great crisped cereal, and it's gluten free. As for the mainstream cereals, both Cocoa Pebbles and Fruity Pebbles are gluten free (but the marshmallow varieties aren't).
  10. Sorry--yes, I was referring to the fancy, spiral-cut hams (the type that one would serve for Easter dinner). I know that Hormel is very good about producing gluten-free products, but I consider that everyday ham. As for Kirkland, I'd like to believe that it's gluten free--does anyone know for sure that it is? As we all know, gluten doesn't have to be listed...
  11. The only thing I have to add to this discussion is, have you had your thyroid checked? How about your adrenals? I suffered from terrible brain fog, fatigue, memory problems, etc., when I was suffering from hypothyroid and didn't know it. If you test out borderline, ask your doctor to give you at least a small dosage of thyroid hormone to see if you feel...

    ARCHIVED Brainless Neurologist

I agree....and I'll bet she didn't wash her hands before she started handing out her business cards. Cc, here we come! I wonder how many people felt ill afterwards and couldn't figure out why.... I live in Martinez and am a member of the Marin GIG, but I haven't been able to make any of the meetings yet. I really wanted to go to Wagner's talk, but I...
  13. Hickory smoked ham? Many, many hams contain gluten. In fact, the only ham I've been able to eat since going gluten free is Honey-Baked Ham, and that's because they state that it's gluten free. My husband recently wanted to serve ham, and I told him "good luck," because it's hard to find gluten-free ham. He called around to various companies and was unsuccessful...
  14. I love Udi's, too! However, for a real treat, I buy Whole Foods' Prairie Bread. OMG--it's wonderful! I toast it and spread a little butter on it...and it's to die for!
  15. Mushroom, Your dad's description fits perfectly with my "floppy tendon syndrome" from deficiencies of zinc, manganese, and silicon. I kept telling people that it felt like the bones were floating in gelatin, and I kept getting stress fractures as a result. It took me way too long to put the pieces together. Sounds as though your dad was suffering from...
  16. Cass, I've been on Armour Thyroid for nearly four years--the synthetic didn't do a thing except cause me to become more hypothyroid. As for Graves, I've never been tested for that. I've had the rash since I first started taking the hormone meds (and the rash exists whether it's synthetic hormone or Armour). It's possible that I have a sensitivity to...
  17. This IS complicated! And I can only say that I called every thyroid hormone replacement lab in the U.S., and every single one assured me that their product contained iodine. Before I went on thyroid meds (and I've taken BOTH Levothroid and Armour), if I accidentally ate gluten, I didn't break out into DH blisters because there was no iodine in my system...
  18. Yes, to maintain tendon and ligament health, you have to be able to absorb certain minerals; hence, pain in the feet and/or joints.
  19. Although I agree that the best way to go is to eat only natural foods, here is a list of "regular" processed foods that can be found at the corner market that are gluten free: Open Original Shared Link It's over a 100 pages of every possible thing you'd care to eat....and, no, they're not more expensive. Hope the list helps you!
  20. Your doctor is probably unaware that there are four different types of tests for celiac, and experts recommend that a minimum of two tests be done. However, since you've been eating gluten free for a few months, you may end up with a false-negative. Since you know that you can't eat gluten, you know now not to eat it. I also agree with the above information...
  21. Uh, oh....looks as though you might have Dermatitis Herpetiformis. If so, then you definitely have celiac. If the endoscopy ends up being negative, have the acne-like lesions tested for DH (the dermatologist needs to biopsy the skin NEXT to a lesion, not the lesion itself). Oftentimes people with DH end up with a false-negative endoscopy, even though they...
  22. Regarding your question about if there are any options for taking medications without iodine, no, there is no other option. I called every lab in the U.S. that manufactures thyroid meds, and they all said that iodine was crucial. Boo hoo.... Also, regarding how doctors handle the iodine issue with people who have DH, they haven't a clue that iodine has...
  23. Your tiredness might be because you have either iron anemia or pernicious anemia (low B12), or you might even have a thyroid condition in addition to possible celiac. It sounds as though you need some testing to get some answers. I also get achy bones and joints when I'm accidentally "glutened." So, celiac is definitely a possibility for you.
  24. I've often wondered about the same things, to be honest. I'm currently 54, but I discovered the connection between iodine and the blisters that I had on my face and neck when I was 34....so I eliminated ALL iodine from my diet. However, at age 50, I developed Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and this caused some major concerns because the iodine causes a chronic...
  25. I just checked the Udi's package, and it says "dairy-free" on it. You're in luck!
