  1. At celiac conferences, it is often mentioned that L-glutamine helps to heal the gut. I had been gluten free for three years when an integrated medicine doctor recommended that I take Metagenics UltraClear Sustain Medical Food, which contains L-glutamine. He told me that it would make me feel as though I didn't have celiac....and he was right. I put one...
  2. Eliminate the iodine!
  3. jswog, Here's an article on the Subway trial in Texas: Open Original Shared Link Even though I don't tend to eat any grains at all, it would be a special treat to be able to eat a Subway sandwich from time to time. Hope the trial extends to California soon!
  4. Redbridge is my personal favorite, which is made by (I think) Budweiser. You can sometimes find it at a regular supermarket in addition to BevMo. There are actually quite a few gluten-free beers on the market, but I've tried about half a dozen so far.
  5. Well....unless you live in Texas or Oregon, where Subway is running a trial on gluten-free sub sandwiches, you'll have to find a way to make your own. Against the Grain Gourmet makes a great gluten-free baguette, which can be found in the frozen-food section of healthfood-type stores (like Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc.). I can highly recommend this brand....
  6. I have to admit....I understand your pain. My muscles were painful my entire life until I went gluten free, and that didn't happen until I was 47. As a child, many of my absences from school were because my muscles (and tendons and ligaments) were too painful--I spent a lot of mornings soaking in very warm tubs of water to get my muscles to a point where...
  7. For starters, your brother's doctor should take him off Norco. It sounds as though he's having an allergic reaction to it--not necessarily, a gluten reaction. Many of us with celiac tend to have trouble with allergic reactions to medications. We can also react to adhesives, cleansers, and products that contain iodine (like Betadine). Be sure that they...
  8. I have the same reaction! If I touch a crumb of wheat on the counter at work, my hands immediately begin itching and hives appear on both forearms that last about two days. Studies are desperately needed in this area--there is no medical literature that I'm aware of that describes this type of reaction to touching gluten. Also, I didn't used to react like...
  9. A fun treat can consist of a sliced banana with honey drizzled on top....or a frozen, chocolate-covered banana. Or frozen fruit bars that you've made yourself.
  10. Such good news!!! And I'm so happy for you!! By the way, Redbridge beer is excellent...and I also like Bard's Dragon's Tail beer. There are also quite a few pizza parlors that offer their pizzas with a gluten-free crust. The crust is provided by Still Riding Pizza, and places like BJ's Bar and Grill and other chain restaurants offer their pizzas on...
  11. Smart man...and thanks for the info about broccoli and spinach.
  12. Normally, barbecues have gluten on them because of barbecue sauces that have been used in the past, not just because bread may have been toasted on them. I NEVER barbecue food on someone else's barbecue; rather, I place my meat or vegetables on foil before placing them on the barbecue. When there's a negative blood test and a positive biopsy for celiac...
  13. I feel so bad for you....it's hard to not be taken seriously. People in the medical field are absolutely the worst people to try to convince that gluten sensitivity exists. Next time, I would simply say that there is so much ignorance and misinformation surrounding the topic, you'd prefer not discuss it. Your health and your baby's health are both more...
  14. I think you may have found your answer--gluten is no good for you. I'm so glad to see an improvement in your symptoms! Yay for you!
  15. I usually end up with DH within half an hour of eating either gluten or a lot of iodine. If you feel you have DH, you need to be careful to avoid BOTH gluten AND iodine. That said, once my DH starts up, it takes 2-3 months before I'm only left with scars.
  16. The easiest way to go gluten free is to eat natural foods; e.g., meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, rice, eggs, etc. If you feel you MUST have gluten-free bread, the best brands (IMHO) are Against the grain, Udi's, and Rudi's--and all of these can be found in the freezer section of an upscale or health market. The best gluten-free pastas are Tinkiyada and...
  17. Here is a list of "regular" food products that can be found at any supermarket: Open Original Shared Link I've found it very helpful for my own son, who has celiac.
  18. In the beginning, it can seem overwhelming....but, really, all you need to do is eat natural foods. Most of us have become so accustomed to eating processed foods, we've forgotten what real food is! If you buy natural foods (e.g., fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, beans, rice, eggs, etc.), you'll be just fine. If you feel that you need a gluten-free substitute...
  19. Some of us suffer the worst destruction to our intestinal lining from gluten combined with hot or spicy peppers. I'm still recovering from such a glutening that happened in April 2010. I'm beginning to think that the lining will never regenerate...and I'll be left having certain nutritional deficiencies for life.
  20. That's interesting about the swelling. I'm wondering if the iodine may have caused it. The only time I swelled up like that was when I went to the emergency room with an allergic reaction to a new medication...and it's possible that I ended up somehow getting iodine into me. I thought my insides were going to burst, and it took several weeks before my...
  21. I actually developed Hashimoto's three years after going gluten-free (because I found out I had celiac). Are you asking about Hashimoto's symptoms going away? Or celiac symptoms going away? I continue to follow a very strict gluten-free diet....but my Hashimoto's will probably never go away.
  22. It may have also been any taco seasonings you may have used--seasonings are oftentimes "cut" with flour to give them a powdery texture. Also, in addition to vegetables and fruits, your brother definitely needs meat and fats. With celiac, we have trouble digesting fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), and if you feed him only carbs, he won't be able to...
  23. The only gluten-free rotisserie chickens I can find are at Costco or Whole Foods. I read an article a couple of years ago that stated that these are the only mainstream gluten-free rotisserie chickens on the market--all the others are marinated with sauces containing gluten. In the very beginning when a person goes gluten free, it is best to eat only natural...
  24. Your family friend may be right--low blood sugar can make you feel shaky and cold, too. When I first found out that I had celiac, I would suffer from low blood sugar while working out....and I started eating a banana right before I exercised, and that helped. I no longer have to do that, though.
  25. If you go in for the thyroid check (by the way, you can just call your doctor and ask him to send a request to the lab--no need for a doctor's visit), you might also request that your B12 and iron levels me checked, too. Even when following a strict gluten-free diet, these two nutrients can sometimes be lacking due to malabsorption problems that haven't...
