ARCHIVED How To Know You Need Digestive Enzymes?
Pegleg84 replied to seraphim's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, as I said, digestive enzymes will NOT prevent damage from ingesting gluten, but I do find they help reduce the gastro symptoms slightly. But I (try to) use them daily, which means less bloating (now if I bloat I know something's gone wrong), undigested food in your stool, more energy because you're absorbing things better. Enzymes are not acidic, so... -

ARCHIVED Can Soy Intolerance Cause Villous Atrophy?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I am off soy in any and all forms. I've heard about some people reacting to eggs/meat from grain-fed animals, but never noticed any difference myself. In any case, still no more info on whether or soy or other proteins (casein, corn...) could cause villous atrophy in the same way that gluten does? -

ARCHIVED Significant Other To Celiac
Pegleg84 replied to tinydani's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm just reading this thread now, and wanted to add my 2 cents worth. It seems to me like your boyfriend might be having some issues other than just wanting to avoid getting glutened, and that you should sit down together and talk about it openly. Is he really just afraid of getting sick, or is he avoiding going out for other reasons? I know I'm definitely... -
I was going to ask if you can get your hands on some wild blueberries, also organic? I eat them all summer long... but if you had trouble with blueberries before, and now again, that could be that. Which sucks. I hope you have many other wonderful fruit to eat instead. And I'll have to look up Steam Powered Giraffe now. Feel better!

ARCHIVED Can Soy Intolerance Cause Villous Atrophy?
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Oh, I'm definitely not running off to have another biopsy. I know that gluten/soy/dairy is bad for me, and having to eat them again would be, well, not good. I was just curious whether anyone else had seen further research/evidence, etc. Apple juice is extremely high in fructose, so much that it's really not that good for you. Glad the blueberry is helping... -

ARCHIVED Interplay Between Gluten And Dairy
Pegleg84 replied to Kat L's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, I've definitely thrown the cross-reactivity idea out the window. When all the info for it is linked to testing provided by only one lab, you have to get a little suspicious. Instead there seems to be a bit more evidence than I thought to the possibility that other intolerances (dairy, soy, etc) could cause villous atrophy. Whaa? I had no idea. Not... -

ARCHIVED Can Soy Intolerance Cause Villous Atrophy?
Pegleg84 posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Intolerances suck. But I always assumed that even though they sometimes cause similar reactions as gluten, that they do not cause the same kind of damage to the vili as does gluten for people with Celiac disease. However, I'm doing a little research, and turns out there's some evidence that intolerances to dairy/soy/corn/etc might cause villous atrophy... -

ARCHIVED Interplay Between Gluten And Dairy
Pegleg84 replied to Kat L's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh dear, I seem to have sent myself down a google-rabbit hole. This is the theory about cross-reactivity (body thinking other food proteins are actually gluten). Please ignore all the testing crud, but it's the best visual explanation of what might be going on: Open Original Shared Link However (and this has probably already been discussed elsewhere... -

ARCHIVED Interplay Between Gluten And Dairy
Pegleg84 replied to Kat L's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i'm also gluten, dairy, and soy free. That seems to be a fairly common combo for Celiacs. I didn't go dairy free until 2 years after going gluten free, and that after worrying that I might have some serious inner-ear problems. Cutting out dairy almost cleared that up, but going soy free made the real difference. (I can have a tiny bit of dairy with little... -

ARCHIVED How To Know You Need Digestive Enzymes?
Pegleg84 replied to seraphim's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey, I've slacked off on my digestive enzymes lately, but when taking them regularly with meals I just tend to digest things better in general. How to know if you need them? I think if you're still having trouble with digestion even when you didn't get glutened, enzymes can help. They will NOT prevent the effects of a gluten or other foods you're intolerant... -

ARCHIVED Organic Wheat = Gluten-Free?
Pegleg84 replied to SteffiW's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ahh yeah, you should talk to the store manager about that. Always pay attention to the labels even if its in the gluten free section. My mom once bought organic bread thinking it was the gluten-free bread she usually gets because the packages look the same... and, well, bad things happened. There really should be 3 section: Gluten Free, Organic, and Gluten... -

ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms With Other Food Allergies?
Pegleg84 replied to celiac girl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi, and welcome to the forum! First of all, I don't think gluten causes neurological damage (except perhaps in rare cases where it can affect brain tissue). but it can cause neurological symptoms, as can other intolerances and allergies. What are your symptoms like when you do it eat dairy or eggs? Do you have these reactions no matter how much you eat... -

ARCHIVED Almost Gave My Celiac Mother A Lecture...
Pegleg84 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey all, I'm reviving this topic, since I need some venting space. I was just home for a week last week, and ooh man! It's amazing how many old things are still sitting around. I did mention this quite emphatically to mom, but she insists she "rarely uses" anything that could be contaminated, so it can't be a problem (really, she gave me the "you're totally... -

ARCHIVED Seriously, That Doesn't Make Sense
Pegleg84 replied to Renegade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The first few months of going gluten-free can definitely be tough, but if you're struggling this much, then something else could definitely be up. 1. talk to you doctor. They should have had you tested for Celiac before going gluten-free, but you could still give the tests a shot and see what it turns up. And endoscopy might also show if something else is... -
As others have said, get your own cutting board, collander, toaster, anything that is hard to clean or could absorb stuff/get stuff stuck in it. If it needs to stay gluten-free, label it. I live on my own, so no worries there, but I was just home for a week where, even though my Mom is celiac and has been eating gluten-free for at least 7 years, there...

ARCHIVED Struggling As A Celiac:(
Pegleg84 replied to lexibrowning's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think you need to carve out a space for yourself in the kitchen. Offering to cook a few meals a week for your whole family is a great idea, but until your family also agrees to make things that are safe for you, then you should be cooking for yourself. If you schedule it right, you can still eat with your family. Get yourself some kitchenware that's dedicated... -
If you can still eat soy, then you'll probably be ok. If you can and are willing to eat eggs, then that's good too. My boyfriend is a strict vegetarian, and doesn't eat eggs (though makes up for my dairy intolerance with all the cheese he eats), and as much as I'd like to be more vegetarian, since I'm intolerant to soy and eggs bother me for some mysterious...

ARCHIVED De-Glutening The Kitchen
Pegleg84 replied to laura1959's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also ignored the cutting board and some other things for far too long, and recently replaced them. I don't think I'm using anything at this point that might be ccd. It might be low-level cc, but it builds up. I think I didn't really notice that it might have been a problem until it was gone! So do all your replacing now. Label everything that needs to stay... -

ARCHIVED Three Days In And First Accidental Glutening
Pegleg84 replied to laura1959's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My bloodtests were negative as well, but I felt much better after even a week eating gluten-free. You could still get a biopsy done at this point if you want to go right back to eating gluten now, but if feeling better on the diet is enough for you, then don't bother. I've always considered myself Celiac despite no official diagnosis (half my family has it... -
Welcome to the forum, Wulfin, sorry to hear you've gone through so much pain to get to this point. Celiac is a hereditary auto-immune disease, and there is no cure. If you have it, you're stuck with it for life. There's some debate over non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance, but that also looks to be a life-long thing. Everyone has different symptoms with this...

I'm always a little nervous that something's going to happen and I'll end up at the hospital and disaster will follow. I've written emergency contact info in my dayplanner which is always in my purse, and I figure if anyone looks as my phone they'll know to contact my boyfriend, but living away from family in a big city is always a small worry that I'll end...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had A Problem With Eating Turkey Meat?
Pegleg84 replied to bayba792's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
try getting some turkey straight from a local butcher if you can (no packages, processed stuff, etc) and see how he does on that. If he's fine, it might be contamination or processing in the turkey you usually have. If he's not, then he could just not be able to tolerate turkey. Or maybe it's taking him longer to get back. Hope you can figure it out. -

ARCHIVED I Need A Safe Rice. Reacting To Lundberg Time, And Time Again.
Pegleg84 replied to CNV2855's topic in Super Sensitive People
I also think it could be either a blood-sugar issue, or just your body not being able to handle that much rice. If you're used to just eating potatoes (and you should be eating more than just potatoes!), then your gut might not be able to handle all the rice, regardless of any contamination issues. I know I can't handle too much rice at once without problems... -
sounds like we might be in the same boat, Dani. The pain comes back, never as bad, but still, well, pain. Let me know what the doc says. Enjoy the rest of your time in England first.

hope the infusions work out for you And if its what you can eat, eat all the cow you need. So lucky you can still eat dairy (jealous) feel better soon! Hope it all sorts out and you can figure out what else is wrong.
