ARCHIVED Happy Spring, Fellow Gardeners!
Pegleg84 replied to notme's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been thinking about my garden lots today. It's still in containers, but will hopefully put a few things in the ground this fall. Not sure about basil flowers. I know that as soon as they bloom the basil looses its flavour, but I don't know if the flowers are edible or not. I would assume yes, but... google? Oh, does anyone know if you can have... -

ARCHIVED Teeth Becoming Translucent
Pegleg84 replied to twe0708's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've noticed this a bit too, and I'm still pretty young (30). I was at the dentist yesterday, and found out the hole I thought was a cracked filling is actually a chip in my tooth! I wonder if having celiac in my teeth-formation years affected their structure? They're super ridgy and constantly staining. In any case, vitamin D and calcium intake is going... -

ARCHIVED Wine ... Gluten Free?
Pegleg84 replied to kdevault's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wine (unless it's flavoured cooler crud) is gluten free. However, some people have problems with wine due to sulphites or alcohol. It sounds more likely that you are still rooting out all the gluten in your diet. Your gut is still inflamed and can't handle the wine (and other alcohols too, likely) because of that. You're going to need a few months to allow... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Sushi?
Pegleg84 replied to ChelseaS's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sushi has become a very occasional special thing to me. I'm also soy-free, so that makes it extra fun. I've found one nice, reasonably-priced, good quality place here in TO. I haven't had sushi out in the city for a year maybe. I've had much better luck when travelling. In San Francisco, there's a Japanese restaurant with, yes, a dedicated gluten-free tempura... -

ARCHIVED Soy- And Gluten-Free Granola/breakfast Bars?
Pegleg84 replied to Kias4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most KIND bars have soy, unfortunately. I'm also a soy-free person, so finding the illusive soy-lectin free chocolate in things is a killer. Lara bars are good. GoMacro bars are really good if you need a lot of energy (most are gluten-free/soy free, but not all, so check). But those are date based. If you want granola, Main Street Bakery makes pretty good... -

ARCHIVED How To Convince Bf That Cross Contamination Is A Problem...
Pegleg84 replied to SoLacey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
oh, that's a relief. Sometimes people really do have to hear from the "experts" before they understand or accept it. At least now he'll start taking things seriously and do his best to keep you safe. BEFORE you move in together. My man and I just moved in together. Very exciting! We've been together for a while and he's very careful about keeping me safe... -

ARCHIVED Helping A Fellow gluten-free Person Out
Pegleg84 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey guys, Just wanted to post a "good news" story. I was in Chicago this past weekend, which is just about one of the best places for Celiacs. I was at a festival all weekend, and brought my own gluten-free beer stash (which I got at the slightly sketchy liquor store down the street. they had a better selection last year, but it did the trick). By Sunday... -
If it's distilled, it's gluten-free, so that's not the problem (added flavouring can sometimes contain gluten). But yep, some people just can't handle alcohol. And not "cheap drunk" can't handle it, but it just does not agree with them. I do know that after one too many (um, 3) whiskies my stomach often feels a bit raw the next day. Not so much a hangover...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Found Anything That Helps With Memory Retrieval?
Pegleg84 replied to Blu-1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think B12 helps... or at least it helps the brain-fog, which... umm... what was I going to say...? -

ARCHIVED Diagnosed A Year Ago, I Am Now Sick Again. So Discouraged
Pegleg84 replied to darknessvisible's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum! I don't have anything to say about thyroid issues, but I can say a word or two about "setbacks". I think we've all had them, and then we feel like crap and that we're not doing things right and many tears and frustration and days you don't want to do anything cause it all sucks... The you kick yourself out of bed and realise that... -
I can eat teeny amounts of cheese (like fingernail sized amounts that I savour as long as I can) and some butter now without problems, but I still avoid soy like the plague. You give me hope, Irish!
 -
I'm intolerant to soy, and while there is no research that shows a direct link from Celiac to other intolerances, it does seem to be quite common for people with Celiac to have other intolerances. I have read that it is possible (though I don't think proven) that for people who are intolerant soy might also cause villous atrophy, but I think the jury's still...

ARCHIVED A Day Of Mixed Events
Pegleg84 replied to Georgia-guy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
gluten-free homebrew! That's brave! There's a couple guys in Toronto who started their own gluten-free brewery from scratch, and are just now starting to make it available ON TAP! at a couple bars in the city. They malt their own millet, and of course had to buy all new equipment and figure out some kind of special tap hookup so that the bar wouldn't send... -

Joint Popping And Muscle Twitching?
Pegleg84 replied to spirit-walk's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Irish, that is some good info. My ankles pop all the time, which is super annoying but doesn't cause any problems (other than being loud when you're doing walking meditation or something). I do occassionally get a clicking noise in the back/base of my skull, which is unnerving, but I'm trying to not to worry about it. Good to see it's pretty normal. I... -
Yes, the blood tests can be unreliable, but its much more likely to be a false negative than a false positive. If it was positive and you feel a lot better not eating gluten, then the likelihood is that you have it. Having a biopsy BEFORE going gluten-free is still recommended, but if you've already been gluten-free for months, and know you're going to be...

ARCHIVED Glutening Or Fat Malabsorbtion?
Pegleg84 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While you should be avoiding all possible cross contamination regardless of symptoms, it is true that we can become more sensitive to gluten over time. It's also possible that your problems with dairy are returning. A couple years gluten-free i started becoming more sensitive, and developed intolerances to dairy and soy. I also have trouble digesting fats... -

ARCHIVED Apple Cider And Lettuce - Instant Diarrhea?
Pegleg84 replied to Ikgbrd's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Do you have problems with alcohol in general, or just cider? It's pretty sugary strong acidic stuff, and I can't drink too much of it without it doing a number on me, sulfites or no (also, I'm kind of sick of cider). Salad greens are another thing entirely. If it's only when you have salad (with dressings and such), then yes it could be sulphites of something... -

ARCHIVED Who's Allergic To Brown Rice?
Pegleg84 replied to Celiacgirl1's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
As to the actually question: I'm not allergic to brown rice (I have no actual allergies as far as I know), but I know my gut doesn't like it very much. Not quite intolerant, but hard to digest. gluten-free grains like sorghum and amaranth and such can also be hard to digest. Maybe digestive enzymes might help, if you aren't taking any already. Are you... -

ARCHIVED Minimisation By Family/friends.
Pegleg84 replied to Chrissie32's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac runs in my family, so when we get together, gluten-free is a given. However, I'm quite sensitive and am intolerant to dairy and soy on top of that, so just knowing "oh, it's gluten-free" is not enough. I want to see labels. I want to know who made it. I feel like some celiac family members think I'm overreacting or going overboard when being hesitant... -

ARCHIVED A Day Of Mixed Events
Pegleg84 replied to Georgia-guy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Always be good to your bartender... This is actually very sweet and encouraging, and if you're a regular its likely they would be willing to get some gluten-free beer in for you. My local is a crazy beer bar with everything you could imagine and then some. My boyfriend is a total beer snob so it's tough to have all that good beer under my nose (I smell a... -

ARCHIVED Should I Throw Out My Colander And Cutting Board?
Pegleg84 replied to Kias4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The collander might be salvageable with a really good long diligent cleaning, but the cutting board should definitely be replaced. Anything wooden is too porous to safely get everything out of, I think. Same with plastic, unless is very new. If your going to have a shared kitchen, maybe your hub can use them instead if he's cooking for himself. Otherwise... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer/ale
Pegleg84 replied to rick797's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
New Planet. Hands down some of the best widely-available gluten-free beer in the US. Their pale ale is excellent, and they have a lovely raspberry ale. Greens is also quite good. Their blonde ale is excellent but super strong. Beware the "gluten removed" beers (Omission, etc). If she can handle them, that's great, but a lot of us can't. Really, she'll just... -
Oh, here we go. This was aparently just a survey, but seems to show that most people who qualify themselves and NCGS did not take the time to get tested for Celiac properly, or don't follow the gluten-free diet strictly enough. Maybe 1 in 4 of respondents did rule out celiac disease and still respond well to a strict gluten-free diet. Open Original Shared...

A question that came up: anyone know anything about the guy who did the study?
 -
Irish, you're awesome! This is the kind of objective yet experienced analysis I was looking for. One study casting doubt on NCGS does not mean it doesn't exist, it means something else might be going on in some cases, and it needs a lot more study. The problem is that as much as scientific peer-reviewed research is valuable and contributes to overall understanding...
