ARCHIVED Anybody Had Problems With Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Gluten Free Baking Mix?
T.H. replied to Kate35's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My daughter and I both can't have it - makes us sick most of the time, yeah. Bob's red mill tests its products at 20ppm of gluten or less. There are other companies that have a lower gluten threshold, however, so if you find out you are more sensitive to gluten, perhaps another baking mix with a lower gluten level might do? Pamela's brand is 5ppm of gluten... -
This chain is mostly in Phoenix, AZ and surrounding areas, one in Tucson, as well, I believe. Picazzo's is a really great gluten-free pizza place. They have a dedicated gluten-free area, dedicated equipment, and dedicated toppings for their gluten-free foods. They have gluten-free versions of almost all their menu offerings, including appetizers. And...

ARCHIVED To Trust Or Not To Trust?
T.H. replied to BeautifulDay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've tried it with my kids and they were kind of iffy during the days we were consuming it, and seemed better off of it. Not a big reaction, though. However, since then, we're starting to suspect that my daughter is one of the celiacs who react to oats, even gluten-free ones, so cross contamination with that might have been an issue for us rather than wheat... -
My father is pretty much the same. He's never called a company about their gluten free status. He goes by labels. I can't. And...I don't know if I can describe how this thinking comes about well enough, but I'm really going to try, because just from talking with my father, I know it probably seems crazy-over-the-top to you for people to do this. And I guess...

ARCHIVED My Gluten Free Diet
T.H. replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is a really great idea. Heh, if nothing else, sometimes it's a good reminder to eat healthy, when you know there's going to be a record of it down somewhere! -
We started out as a mixed household, with an 8 and 12 year old, and it was SO hard to keep contamination down. Then one got diagnosed as a celiac, too, and the other had symptoms resolve on the diet, so we ended up ALL gluten-free. I think if we HAD to have a mixed household, I would have had a separate shelf/cupboard for the gluten. And keep it on the...

ARCHIVED Daughter Probable For Celiac
T.H. replied to anna34's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sounds like a very good GI. :-) Even if any test is negative, based on my own experience, I would seriously consider having everyone go gluten free for a few months, just to see. Myself and my daughter ended up positive, my son negative, but we took him off gluten anyway (he had the big belly going on, too). The belly went away, his emotions smoothed... -
ARCHIVED Are You A Celiac Who Reacts To gluten-free Oats? Please Help!
T.H. posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Best I can tell, I seem to be one of the small percentage of celiacs who react to oats just like wheat, rye and barley, whether the oats are gluten free or not. We think my daughter might be having the same issue; we keep trying to figure out all her reactions, and slowly learn more and more. If any other oat intolerant folks might be able to offer some... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Rice Milk?
T.H. replied to BeautifulDay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ever tried to make your own rice milk? It is SO easy. We react to many of the additives in non-dairy milks, too, but then I found a recipe for rice milk and I couldn't believe how simple it is. Takes a few hours, but you can essentially ignore the boiling pot. It only has two ingredients for the most basic ( 8 cups water and 1 cup brown rice) and you can... -
I doubt this is what your husband was thinking of, but I have heard that in Europe they are working on taking out gluten from wheat! Maybe they have managed it? I was trying to find a link to refresh my memory and can't find it anymore. Although honestly, it seems SO stupid. Honestly, the gluten is why wheat is so great to use. If it's gluten free, it...

ARCHIVED Help Me! I'm Tired Of Flavorless!
T.H. replied to justjacqueline's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's the common name for foods in the Solanaceae family. Some people can have an allergy to the entire family of foods, or a sensitivity to them. The usual suspects are: potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Can We Talk About Poop For A Minute?
T.H. replied to jeannieknits's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How much gluten free processed foods do you eat? Did you eliminate them all when you were working on the diet part? Or were you taking vitamins or supplements when you were changing your diet? I know for me, if I get gluten-free processed foods, I'll end up with severe constipation now, and that includes medication and vitamins. Best I can tell, it's actually... -
ARCHIVED Sore Throat As A First Sign Of Glutening
T.H. replied to Marz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I keep meaning to buy them now, too. Open Original Shared Link Wish they were cheaper! -
ARCHIVED Is A Negative Biopsy Final?
T.H. replied to xabbar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've met two people who definitely have Crohn's but who were helped quite a bit by going gluten free. If the boy's doctors have not suggested dietary triggers for the little one's Crohn's, his parents should be finding a new doctor, anyway. That's one of the first thing most good doctors I know of do: see what triggers the Crohn's, if possible, so they can... -
ARCHIVED On Celiac Diet For A Year, Now I Have Joint Pain
T.H. replied to imracin68j's topic in Doctors
There's nothing in bread or flour that joints depend on, to my knowledge. However, most gluten products are vitamin fortified and most gluten free bready products are not, so there could be some vitmin or nutrient that you WERE getting that you are now not. However, I'm another who had joint pain AFTER going gluten free. For myself, it happens if I am... -
ARCHIVED New - 16Month Just Diagnosed
T.H. replied to raeskids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Kirkman labs specializes in vitamins for kids and people with multiple allergies - it was recommended for myself and my kids after diagnosis. They have chewable vitamins, liquid vitamins, or powders designed to into soft food or drink. They have been quite good about talking with me about dosages, different products of theirs, etc. Might be worth checking... -
ARCHIVED Children Testing?
T.H. replied to meme2kids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'll share what we did. I was positive first, then tested the kids, like ya'll. My daughter came back positive, my son negative. After looking at the rate of false negative, and the potential for gluten possibly triggering celiac disease in susceptible individuals (that's just a theory. It has never been proven), I took my son off gluten, too. He had... -
ARCHIVED So Difficult (And Frustrated) With Companies Not Labelling Properly
T.H. replied to glut'nfree's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know what you mean. I was getting sick over and over again and finally figured out it was a contaminated bottle of oil from Spectrum. They process wheat germ oil on the same line as all the rest of their oils. Argh. -
ARCHIVED Unstable Immune System? -Vent Alert-
T.H. replied to MsMissy's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It just occurred to me: how much help are you getting in avoiding these foods that are getting you? Without aid in finding all the potential hidden sources of these foods, I think it might be pretty easy to be getting small amounts from contamination. The yeast is what got me thinking. I just had a talk with a friend who has yeast issues. She's had them... -
ARCHIVED Van's Waffles Make Me Dizzy?
T.H. replied to Ms. Isley's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter does - Van's always makes her sick. She's been gluten-free for a year now, and as time goes on, she reacts to lower levels of gluten than she originally did. Dizziness is one of her gluten symptoms, too, that was not present originally but is now. The dizziness is also one of my gluten symptoms that slowly developed. I used to get dizzy easily... -
ARCHIVED Light Bulb Moment
T.H. replied to athome1998's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd second going gluten free, regardless of test results. A good friend of mine on an extremely limited budget has a little one who sounds very similar to yours. Grainy stools, horrific red, rashy bottom and such. She lucked out because three people in my family were diagnosed with celiac disease just a few months before the stool issues started, and we... -
ARCHIVED Gluten A Possiblity Or Not? Need Help
T.H. replied to topaz1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your problems do seem very indicative of a food issue, but yeah...it could be LOTS of different foods, I'm afraid. If going gluten free did nothing, then either that is NOT the issue, or it's not the only issue. The low vitamin levels would, I think, be more possible evidence that you are not digesting well. For an elimination diet, if you wish to try... -
ARCHIVED Urgent Help, Desperate
T.H. replied to charley2006's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh goodness, hon, so sorry your little one is so ill right now! Pretty much what everyone else said, plus: - Keep a food journal. What he eats, what brand it is, what time he eats it, and how he's feeling. Because of the delayed nature of a lot of reactions, it is REALLY helpful to figure out what's going on if you have this. - does he have more pain... -
ARCHIVED Coming Up On Three Months Gluten Free
T.H. replied to Roda's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Best I can do is relate my own experiences on this one. - re: doctors? If you find a very, very good doctor, he or she might take the information you gathered and review things and perhaps be willing to make a judgement call on your son's health. I have had one doctor like this in 20 years of trying to find good health with doctors spread across three... -
ARCHIVED Is Celiac My Magic Bullet?
T.H. replied to AerinA's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
...and if the tests and biopsy are both negative? There is absolutely nothing stopping you from trying the diet yourself, either. A number of people here have tested negative for celiac disease, both blood and biopsy, but had symptom improvement (or complete reversal) on a gluten free diet. Re: the symptoms? I don't have the big D, either. I never thought...
