I'm 5'8", and I've probably had celiac disease since I was a young teen. My daughter is 5'3" and she's twelve and had undiagnosed celiac disease for at least the past 5 years. My father, also positive, is 6' 2" My brother, also positive, is 6'4" My son, the only celiac negative test among us (although he does react to gluten), is 8 years old and the...

Yay, thanks for saying Hi! I always love meeting "like-minded folks" too
Yeah, I won't be wearing mine for too much longer. One's 18 months and the other is almost 3 but both get a ride on mommy's back occasionally

ARCHIVED New - 16Month Just Diagnosed
T.H. replied to raeskids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Okay, here's what I'd do: 1) I'd keep him off of dairy, right away. The tips of the villi are where lactase to digest lactose is produced, so if their is intestinal damage, most celiacs are lactose intolerant until they heal. I was told by my GI that it can also slow the healing if he eats dairy while intolerant to it. If your doctors took some convincing... -
It's been frustrating with what seems like a sudden influx of articles about how the gluten free diet is just a fad, bad for you, etc... I thought it might be nice to share how we've helped people by spreading the information that we've learned from each other within the celiac community. So, I'll start. I have a little chatty Live Journal blog...

ARCHIVED To Trust Or Not To Trust?
T.H. replied to BeautifulDay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
3. Do you trust companies that have a poor reputation for labeling and/or a history of recalls? After being gluten-ed by one batch of a product that you previously trusted, do you go back to that product later and continue to eat it or do you completely abandon it?? To date, I haven't gone back to a company that has a poor reputation or history of... -
ARCHIVED Potential Gluten Allergie
T.H. replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, if you put the symptoms of the four celiacs in my family together, here's all the symptoms we had on gluten that overlap the ones you mentioned: Diarrhea Constipation Loose, Flat and Ribbon Stool Noisy stomach (Most on my left side and towards my lower back) Foul Smelling gas at least 3-4 times a week Gnawing feeling in stomach, indigestion... -
So happy to hear that you found such a wonderful doctor who paid attention to his patient first (seems like to the other one, ego came first, patient second. ) . Just...enjoy having your wife back again. I hope you two have a grand time of things. :-)

ARCHIVED Sweet Potato W Maple Syrup
T.H. replied to rain's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It kind of depends on where you are. In the united states, yams and sweet potatoes are the same. One is red fleshed, one is pale, but they are the same plant type. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, though, yams are what we call African yams here in the States. So when we say yams, they'd say sweet potato, LOL. But with the buzzing and tingling... -
ARCHIVED Contamination?
T.H. replied to LindsayRae329's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is possible to get cross contaminated by gluten cat food, I recall hearing one gal who got glutened when her dog licked her and accidentally got her lips. However, usually it wouldn't involve your gut swelling up like that, I wouldn't think, not unless you are ingesting more of it. Have you tried a food journal/elimination diet? They can be very helpful... -
Have they ever checked your gall bladder? I know that it can cause trouble for some celiacs, and as I recall, digestion of fats (like from meat) can really do a number on you when your gall bladder isn't working right. I was just noticing that you couldn't eat meats and sparked a memory there. Also, for meats - do you have any antibiotic issues? I have...

ARCHIVED Head Aches ,migranes
T.H. replied to davidsmomceliac12's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'd put him on an elimination diet - my daughter and son both had trouble with other foods on top of the gluten, and they turned out to be more sensitive to gluten than most of the gluten free foods were (my daughter reacts to <10ppm of gluten, and most gluten-free food has <20ppm). The depression along with the migraines makes me think undiscovered... -
ARCHIVED Unstable Immune System? -Vent Alert-
T.H. replied to MsMissy's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I just saw an article about something like this the other day - the theory was the leaky gut was making it so that you continually develop more and more food allergies. Every time you start eating more of a food, it gets through your 'leaky gut' more, enters your blood stream, and you start reacting to that, too. I don't know much about it - just read... -
It depends on how sensitive to corn you are. For the really sensitive: ALL iodized salt - corn is used to stabilize the iodine. You'll need to get a liquid supplement or add a lot of fish or seaweed to your diet. xanthan gum is derived from corn citric acid is often cc with corn (it's a byproduct of bacteria that is fed corn syrup, and the corn...

ARCHIVED Sudden Allergic Reaction To Chicken
T.H. replied to moggio's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
This one I might have an answer for! If you are getting DH after eating chicken, it's likely you are reacting to gluten cc on the skin. If you wash the skin, and take the skin off, you might be okay (still could be an issue, though). Most chicken is defeathered in a defeathering machine these days. They wash the chicken, then put it in the defeathering... -
ARCHIVED Oats
T.H. replied to icuski2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
wouldn't the oat flour be an issue? -
For fructose malabsorption, this is a list of safe foods, in a nice chart format: Open Original Shared Link However, some other possibilities? - What fruit did you eat when you got D? Apples, pears, and most citrus have wax coatings that are made from shellac wax, which has either soy or casein added to it! (when you cut into the citrus, if you are REALLY...

ARCHIVED 1 Week And My Life Has Change
T.H. replied to meme2kids's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
welcome to the beginning of feeling better. :-) It's scary, it can be kind of crummy at first, but when you start feeling better, it's pretty amazing in a good way. Family members - yeah, I'd encourage every relative you have to get tested, frankly. Admittedly, that's just me, but this was my family experience: My father was diagnosed by accident.... -
I have been scouring the internet for recipes from the 1700-1800's. (just google recipe and a century and you'll have some pop up) I'm also haunting cooking shows for the really complicated recipes, not to make the recipe, but to pick up ideas that I could use with my own foods (like boiling down fruit juice to use as a sweetener, as we can't use sugar, although...

ARCHIVED Positive Blood And Negative Biopsy
T.H. replied to Holly4's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ignore the ignorant doctor, listen to the blood test. That recent study involved patients with positive blood tests and negative biopsies, specifically. And those with positive blood tests had metabolic problems just like the positive biopsied celiacs. The speculation after the study was that the blood test being positive may precede positive biopsies... -
I know that my daughter and myself grew more sensitive over about a year and half. My father's diet seems to be not working so well suddenly after about 9 years, so I think he may be growing more sensitive as well. Might definitely be worth your while to cut back on processed foods, see if that helps, eh?

ARCHIVED Anyone Have An Anal Fissure Surgery?
T.H. replied to jasonD2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had horrific fissures and hemorrhoids after pregnancy that kept reopening over and over. I don't know that what I found works for everyone, and I honestly can't recall where I read of what to do, but I DID find something that worked for me. It took a while, but it actually helped significantly. Very simple: don't sit down to defecate. Squat over the... -
ARCHIVED Cc At School, Other Siblings Protesting gluten-free Foods, More
T.H. replied to teresasupermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So sorry it's been so hard for you and your family! It seems like such a simple thing, to change food, but it's so basic to so much of our lives, it really can hit hard, yes? Okay, here's a ton of little things that popped into my head on reading your post - very sorry if they are redundant! 1. The two children with diabetes - have they been... -
Is your diflucan gluten free? I didn't know if you might have a generic version that might not be gluten-free - most pharmacists won't even check on that, even if you have 'gluten free' in nice big letters on their computer. That might explain the anxiety, big-time. I'd double check the GABA is gluten-free, too. Also, did the doctor talk to you about...

ARCHIVED No Villi Visible After gluten-free For Over A Year?
T.H. replied to HS7474's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I was diagnosed, my GI said that the following could impede healing 1) any other food allergies and intolerances, even allergies mild enough not to cause hives or rashes 2) Dairy. If you have no villi, you are not making lactase - it's made in the tips of the villi, as I understand it. 3) drinking alcohol - he recommended that I stay away from it... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Like An Outcast
T.H. replied to Iluvaceliac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If a restaurant can't accommodate all your boyfriend's food issues, they will often be fine if you call them ahead of time and explain that your group would like to eat at their establishment but that one person in the party has severe physical reactions to numerous foods and so would have to bring his own food. Ask if that would be acceptable. They usually...
