ARCHIVED Tussionex Cough Medicine
cdford replied to Fonda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have used it since going gluten-free without a problem as long as I only use a half dose at a time. If I take a full dose, I get whacky-headed and sick to my stomach. My pharmacist is usually really good about making sure on my meds. -
ARCHIVED Outback Bloomin' Onion Recipe
cdford replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I also meant to mention that there is a tool for cutting the onion. Mine was a Christmas gift several years ago, but I have also seen them at the stores. One comes in a Vidalia onion recipe kit as well. -
ARCHIVED Outback Bloomin' Onion Recipe
cdford replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
There is also a website with that kind of stuff, if only I could remember the URL for it. Also, the blooming onion recipe works much better if you soak the onion in ice water for a while first. -
ARCHIVED Lost And Confused
cdford replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If it is the dairy, keeping it out of the diet for several months will help. When you reintroduce it, use only a tablespoon or two to check reaction. If a reaction occurs, limiting the amount will help limit the length and severity of the reaction. Also, if a reaction occurs, wait another couple of months before trying again. We had to do this with all three... -
ARCHIVED Buying In Bulk
cdford replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bulk is the only way to go if you use a lot of stuff and want to save on shipping and handling. We did it for years before going gluten-free and save a bundle on our grocery bills. -
One of Joshua's wedding showers was a covered dish affair given by a Sunday School class at the bride's church. I, as usual, took several of my own dishes to ensure that I would have something to eat. It was interesting to hear all the comments about how healthy my diet was. Most of my food was gone at the end of the evening as well.

ARCHIVED Chocolate Thunder From Down Under
cdford replied to liljules5's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Do they have one on that site that does the copies of the restaurant menu items? I cannot remember the name of it right now. I had it bookmarked until I upgrade the system and lost all that. There were some really neat recipes there. -
ARCHIVED Wanted For My Gf Grocery Store.....
cdford replied to mrsfish-94's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Be sure to consider baking supplies we need like Xanthan gum, potato starch (hard to get unless your usual grocery has a Jewish foods section), tapioca, flax seed, gluten-free yeast, etc. gluten-free sauces, spices, personal care, and cleaning supplies would be good also. -
ARCHIVED Recognize This Symptom?
cdford replied to Matilda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, and if I let it go on very long, I'll begin to pitch back everything I ate all day long. It is like nothing goes through and what little does is scraping my innards front and back. It gets really bad sometimes and the doc treats me for gastritis. She figured it out with a scope. Now she has me on Nexium. I have not done it since the day after I started... -
ARCHIVED I Have A New Problem Now
cdford replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Two questions and possible answers to them: 1- Do you have any muscle or neurological problems from the celiac disease? Muscle spasms in the throat can cause what you are describing. I have them when I get glutened or get too fatigued. I take medication for the spasms since they occur so regularly for me. You may also want to take small bites and chew... -
ARCHIVED Flu Like Symptoms
cdford replied to scifijunky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Jenn and I both get that. She also gets a massive sinus infection almost every time. The docs gave us this advise: - Lavage the sinuses twice a day with 8 oz warm water mixed with 1 tsp salt and a pinch of baking soda. This keeps bacteria from having a chance to build up in there with your immune system pitching a fit. That is often the reason for the... -
ARCHIVED Who's Job Is It To Know What's Gf
cdford replied to ryebaby0's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is it possible that your family has done what many families do without thinking about it...delegated certain responsibilities to each family member and you got the "food caretaker, instruction enforcer" role? Because I tend to be the reader/researcher in my household and am also medical term savvy, that role fell to me by default. Other family members learn... -
ARCHIVED How Did This Happen So Quickly?
cdford replied to anniej55's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. My son got married tonight so this week has been really hectic. When I overdo it, I go through a cycle of either sleeping all the time for a day or two or being so tired I cannot stay asleep and will sometimes stay up for a day or two straight. The easiest way to check on a product, whether a food or a medical... -
ARCHIVED Welchol
cdford replied to cdford's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got the call back on Welchol and it IS gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Virus Wont Go Away
cdford replied to kirst4588's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You are right, Eloisa. The smell is different if there is a virus whether it comes back up or out the other end. -
ARCHIVED Kroger Jumbo Topping Cherries
cdford replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have not checked on this specific item. Sorry. -
ARCHIVED Virus Wont Go Away
cdford replied to kirst4588's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
His immune system could just be struggling. We went through the same thing with our daughter. She got sick at the drop of a hat and took several times as long as her siblings to get over it. The molars are a good thought. I thought of one other. Are you still nursing? If so, could you be passing something on that is triggering the stomach problems? I... -
ARCHIVED Small Window For Preventing Celiac Disease?
cdford replied to luvs2eat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I took celiac3270's advice and got on Google's Alerts for celiac. There were several recent articles about this. The other thing they kept repeating was that gluten should be introduced in small amounts a little each day instead of a bowl at a time. Mine were all introduced at about that 4-6 month time frame with dairy introduced much later. So far one of... -
I cannot take the other cholesterol meds for various reasons. Has anyone checked on Welchol? I have e-mailed them but it is taking a while to get an answer.

ARCHIVED How Did This Happen So Quickly?
cdford replied to anniej55's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It takes a while, but you will get the hang of it. Once you have sorted through which brands you can buy of which items, your grocery shopping gets much closer to what it used to be...you head to the store with a list and just automatically pick up the brand of an item that you know you can eat. I keep a notebook with me containing the gluten-free lists and... -
ARCHIVED How Did This Happen So Quickly?
cdford replied to anniej55's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As you go gluten-free, you may experience a period of time where your body is adjusting. After that, the longer you are gluten-free, the better your will feel and the fewer symptoms you will show on a daily basis. This did not happen suddenly, just the consequences became enough for it to finally be seen for what it is. The good news is that by going gluten... -
I forgot to add that if they try hard and get it right, I leave a very good tip. They will usually see me coming the next time and work for that tip again.

I usually find that my restaurant card and a simple explanation that this is very important because I will become quite ill works. I usually will ask them for assistance in finding an appropriate item for me from their menu. I try to state my concerns emphatically but nicely. Usually the server will show back up with a manager who will quiz me for a minute...

ARCHIVED Bacterial Enzyme Renders Gluten Harmless
cdford replied to Emme999's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
As with all new therapies, I would probably take a wait and watch mentality. I do this even with some of the new wonder drugs for other things or immunizations for my kids. I figure if it is still shown to work with minimal side effects after several years, then I'll try it. Even then, I would probably just keep it around for special occasions. I just can... -
ARCHIVED Dental Cleaning
cdford replied to celiacfreeman's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My dentist has verified with the mfr that the one theyuse is gluten-free. They also flagged our files with red notices to always check if a new one is in use. This may be a life saver for us since our dentist died last week and there will be temporaries in the office for a while. I would also double check by asking if they verified it prior to letting them...
