  1. There are some generic "phenergan"s that are gluten-free. Ask your pharmacist to check on it.
  2. There are lots of flours you CAN use. We so often think in terms of what we can't do. I suggest starting out with those items you know you can have then add a new one to be sure you don't have a true allergy to it. If you are looking for protein, use some flax in your flour. The packaging states the following: Cholesterol: 0 Sodium: 0 Protein:...
  3. I happened upon this post when searching for another item and realized that no one had answered the question. I hope this was not too discouraging for you. I was milling my own grains before realizing that a couple of us in our family were celiac disease/DH. I had to pass the old mill and all the goodies on to a friend and start over. It took me a while...
  4. I have no idea what a 504 plan is, but my middle school daughter was allowed to leave special foods in the cafeteria refrigerator with simply a physician's note. I provided information on both the celiac and the fibromyalgia. She was given special leeway when the FMS caused her problems with functioning in the mornings (she would sometimes require lengthy...
  5. I had to change several of my meds upon going gluten-free. The doc has had to adjust prescriptions several times since once we contacted the manufacturer. My pharmacist has me listed on his computer as "Donna *Gluten Free* Ford". Who would have thought this disease would change my middle name even? When I get a new Rx, I ask the doctor to verify it. I...
  6. I have osteopenia, not yet osteoporosis. Since going gluten-free, the numbers have not gotten worse and now have begun to gradually move in the right direction. Apparently it is a long process but being gluten-free keeps any further damage from being a given fact. Here is what I was told to do: Completely separate dairy from any meat meal by at least two...
  7. From Donna to Donna...the good thing about ignorance is that it can be fixed. This is as good a place as I have found to do that.
  8. That site was amazing. It was as though some of those articles were describing my life. I went for years until totally and permanently disabled before anybody even considered celiac as a possibility. The neurologist said he had not treated a celiac patient in 15 years, but he said it sure explained all those whacky neurological problems the other docs kept...
  9. Try to relax a little. Maybe my story will help. They tested me for everything from MS to AIDS, lymphoma to lupus, before they gave up and decided they couldn't figure it out. Of course I was negative for all of them except EBV. They checked me for MS every six months for five years they were so sure of it. Turns out the celiac disease had caused the neurological...
  10. I can just see that 3 yr old! What a hoot!
  11. gluten-free brownies and ice cream are a good substitute for cake. I take them even to church functions since there are several of us at ours. My daughter had a tough time transitioning to the gluten-free diet when she was eleven. She just did not want to deal with it at all. Once she took a gluten-free pizza to a pizza party and the other kids wanted to...
  12. It will feel so much better once you have been gluten-free for a while, but do not do it until after the testing. In order to get a good test result, you need to have been eating gluten. Your symptoms sound so familiar!
  13. I am not a teenager, but am one of those less than 5% of people who did not get EBV (mono) by age 30. It was the trigger for my celiac disease symptoms. Looking back, I can see that I had the problem my whole life, just not badly enough for any doctor to take notice. My teeenage daughter also has recurring EBV. She has not been down badly with it in about...
  14. One of my children has had problems with constipation since birth, even on nothing but breast milk. The doctor's "constipation diet" we were given around age five basically went like this: Absolutely NO white flour (of course, for us), white rice, white potatoes, apples. or bananas. Avoid dairy initially then gradually add back if not otherwise reactive...
  15. We get the nutritional yeast from Bob's Red Mill. We used to get it from the health food store, but I can no longer drive the 45 minutes to get there. We especially like it on popcorn (with just a touch of salt and garlic powder as well). It is sooo high in B vitamins for energy.

    ARCHIVED Dh Insude Nose?

I have been gluten-free for about two years and I still have the spots come up, just not as often and not as "itchy" (I put the itchy in quotes because it is not the usual itch for us...at least not like a histamine reaction such as a mosquito bite). I never knew the difference until I learned what I had.
  17. I live fairly close to a grocery store with a good specialty section containing gluten-free items. It is most often still cheaper to mail order unless I need something right now. Your cooking skills will increase rapidly with experience. You will probably find that you actually enjoy it more and are able to maintain the diet more easily.
  18. Don't know if Alex makes his own bread, but we do at our house. I even mill my own grains and mix the flours up once a week. There are several good posts about making breads in machines and I gave detailed info on milling your own grains in a current post about lowering grocery bills.
  19. You are welcome for the mill info. Hope you enjoy milling once you get your own. Don't hesitate to message me if you need further info. One other thing you may want to get is a small spice/coffee mill for the flax seed. You can get one at the local Walmart for very little money. I use a Black and Decker Smartgrind and run a tablespoon of rice through it to...
  20. I forgot tomention that you can add a tablespoon or two of tomato sauce to the French if your family likes the tomato flavor and color.
  21. I have become the queen of the 30 minute meal. I am disabled and do not have the stamina to make it any longer. The key is planning and having things readily available. When you shop, go ahead and rinse everything. The night before, take the meat out of the freezer and place it into the fridge to begin thawing. I usually do this at the same time I begin tonight...
  22. About the mill... Mine is a Whisper Mill. I bought it from BreadBeckers. You can access their site at www.breadbeckers.com. They also carry bulk stuff like the rices and beans and such. I just bought a five gallon bucket of brown rice flour for under $30.00. It will last my family of five between 6 and 12 months. If kept clean and dry, bulk grains unmilled...
  23. I was looking for a place to post a comment on the sleep thing when I came across this one. I accidentally got into some gluten yesterday...just a tiny amount obviously since it did not trigger any true allergic reactions like it often does. I then went to my son's baseball practice and sat around for a couple of hours, went and picked up a few items at Walmart...
  24. Why no butter unless you have a problem with dairy? At least Outback uses real butter. I get so frustrated with those places that throw the term butter around and don't even have any available on the premises.
