  1. I have what most folks would consider catastrophic medical expenses almost every year so it is worth my while to take this stuff off my taxes. We are also on a very tight budget with three kids on a disability income. What I have found works best for me is to keep a special page in my commercial guide (or other notebook you carry with you to shop). When...
  2. I had to replace my old mill and equipment as well. I find that I can purchase some of the new flours bulk easier than I can mill them. I still mill brown rice, Amaranth, buckwheat, and some of the others. The four flour mixes seem to give me the best texture when I use them as the base and substitute other flours to give it a different flavor and nutritional...
  3. Bob's Red Mill has multiple processing areas. The only products they specifically label as gluten-free are those handled in the gluten free area of their facility and tested for gluten. I had this discussion with them a few months ago. You probably haven't poisoned yourself, but as I understand it BRM won't "guarantee" gluten-free for this product.
  4. I had to go lactose free for several months at the beginning, but then was able to add back small amounts of dairy. Now after well over a year, I can handle it well unless I eat certain cheeses. The advice from these others is a good place to start. It has helped four of our family members. Hopefully you will be like me as you heal and be able to add back...
  5. Week 13 is magic...one day during that week you will probably wake up and be surprised by the fact that you are not so sick. Don't ask me why, but it happened every time.
  6. I suffered for years with the pain and fear of cysts on my ovaries and in my breasts. Since going gluten free, many symptoms have mediated or entirely cleared. Hope you have as positive experience.
  7. I craved salt also when I was pregnant. The OBGYN told me that as long as my blood pressure was okay not to worry about it. Check with yours and hopefully he will say the same. Try some b-complex for the nausea and fatigue. They worked wonders for me with my four pregancies (3 live births). I know that Perrigo labs are gluten free. They are distributed...
  8. I'm a mother of three and had awful "morning sickness" 24 hours a day! One thing that really helped was to add B complex to my diet. For some reason pregnancy, especially early pregnancy, causes the b vitamins to be depleted from the stomach. They will also help with the fatigue that can come with pregnancy. You may also want to consider eating in small meals...
  9. Yeah, I'm not alone! My blood pressure is so low that nurses often take it two or three times because they think they have made an error. If I wind up at the hospital, they hold me until they can get it up to a certain point before they let me go home. The good news is that we don't have to worry about some of the issues associated with high blood pressure...

    ARCHIVED Red Lobster

We had such a great experience with our local Red Lobster (Douglasville, GA) that I contacted corporate about it. The waiter, the manager, and the chef were all involved. They even thought to open a fresh thing of salad fixings so that there was not a risk of cross contamination. I requested that the veggies be in butter only (no extra seasonings) and have...
  11. I sure wish someone would give us a really clear directive on this. I would just love a good bowl of oatmeal. My cholesterol levels would like it as well.
  12. And the good news is.... If you are like those of us in my family, your other sensitivities will get better with time. Of a four page list, my daughter is now down to gluten and two others. I haven't had an asthma attack in months now. It almost seemed worse at first but then little by little it got so much better.
  13. Ah, for those days when my mill and three bread machines sat atop my kitchen counter. Twice a week, I faithfully milled my own wheat and carefully baked whole grain bread for my family. After all, what could be better for us (and our cholesterol, and our digestion, ...) than fresh baked bread with honey and a little butter? Little did I know that I was precipitating...
  14. Not only is it truly "geographic", but mine feels swollen. For years, I told my doctors that one of my symptoms was that my tongue felt too big for my mouth and got open "rivers" in it at times. Now we know what it is and they don't look at me funny any more. It seems to have settled down on the gluten-free diet. If I ever get into anything accidentally,...
  15. and some of us see saw for a while. I have been gluten-free for a year and a half now. I go through periods of time when I am seeing progress, then hit a plateau for a while when it seems as though I am never going to get better. A couple of times I fell into a temporary "hell" and the only explanation the doctors could give me was that I must have gotten...
  16. Okay, so it drove me crazy until I went and got the info... The name was pityriasis lichenoides (PLEVA is a form of it). It it hard to find info on it because it is not a real common form of rash. I got the info from our dermatologist who got it off a sit called emedicine.com. There was another site from New Zealand that had good info. At any rate...
  17. My daughter got some of those patches. They have a name, but I can't remember it. It is a side symptom of the celiac and can also be caused by recurrent EBV (that's how we learned about them then segued into the celiac/dh diagnosis). Most of our "celiac bumps" are the pus pocket things that look more like chicken pox or poison ivy, but what you are describing...
  18. Idahoan and Kroger potato flakes are gluten-free. We use the Kroger brand because they are so much cheaper. Don't know about the taco seasoning since we make ours from scratch. I can't have soy anymore because it triggers the neurological symptoms, but we used LaChoy when I could. Donna
  19. Oh yes, I forgot. Yes you can have bread made from millet, quinoa, amaranth, teff, bean flours, rice, etc. as long as they do not also contain wheat, rye, barley, or oats. The ones with the best texture are based in the bean flours but have the other flours for flavor. There are some pretty good recipes out there. Keep looking. Good luck!
  20. We have DH and the gluten-free diet has worked wonders...if you stick to it faithfully. Many of the scars are now even beginning to fade. Just one mistake, though, and here come those itchy ugly sores again. Expect it to take a year or more to get it fully under control. I agree with the earlier post. Research, research, research. Keep a notebook. A great...
  21. Gluten challenge = sheer misery with little positive results. Take it from one who has been there. I sat and cried when my symptoms gradually came back and I went through weeks of misery over two weeks worth of freedom. Even then the GI doc did not want to believe it without a positive biopsy. Never again for me. Donna
  22. Malt-o-Meal versions are also gluten-free if your budget is tight. Some of the store brands are but you have to read carefully. My kids went crazy for a while until we found some gluten-free cereals. I still miss my frosted mini wheats. Donna

    ARCHIVED Survey

The celiac disease Connection Please take this survey for my science fair project. 1. Do you have Celiac Disease? Yes 2. Do you have Type I Diabetes? No 3. Sex Female Thanks!
  24. Check your cycle to be sure that it is not sitting for hours before it cooks. Also, you may want to adjust the darkness indicator to a darker crust so that it cooks a little higher/longer. By the way, using the olive oil will help the bread to stay fresh longer. For some reason it has a preservative quality. If you are looking for something with a little...
  25. By the way, if your four year old has a significant new breakout, consider taking him to a dermatologist to check for DH. Just make sure they know what you want to check before you get there since they often have to have either special equipment or have a special lab pickup for it. You shouldn't hurt anybody's feelings by taking a child with a skin rash to...
