  1. I used to have reflux so bad I'd be in tears! It was painful to eat, painful to drink, and painful to breathe! Since being gluten free though, it hardly bothers me ever. And I have a hiatal hernia. now all I get is hiccups.
  2. I was diagnosed with depression fairly young, and was on and off meds from the time I was 20. I tell you though, life is soooooooooo much easier to deal with now since I'm gluten free! I really do think that a lot of my problems prior to diagnosis had to do directly with gluten intolerance and then Celiac disease.
  3. yeah, everybody's normal is different. And the "normal" ranges for all the thyroid hormones are kinda vast really! As for Celiac masking thyroid issues, I don't know really, but I think a lot of the symptoms are the same, which is why both are misdiagnosed so often! When I was first put on the meds for hyperthyroid, after a couple of weeks I couldn...
  4. Hashimoto's is actually hypo-thyroid. Grave's disease is hyper-thyroid. Hyperthyroid symptoms are racing heart rate, insommia, sweating, mood swings, muscle pain, shortness of breath, and extreme hunger. Long term untreated can have lasting physical affects. I would strongly suggest you have your thyroid levels checked. Hyperthyroid can be quite...
  5. speak to the organizer ahead of time and make arrangements for edible food for you to be brought in at lunch, and pick restaurants that will have at least a couple of choices for you. Don't starve yourself just because you're to shy to tell people you have a food caused disease! That's just rediculous. If you had diabetes would you be too shy to say you...
  6. the other night I felt all bloaty and couldn't figure out why, and then I had some homemade yogurt for dessert and a short time after that I didn't feel so bloaty. I don't know for certain if I got glutened, but something wasn't quite right, but the yogurt seemed to help for some reason. Maybe the bacteria in it.
  7. Just stick to real food, rather than packaged garbage. There's no gluten in broccoli or lemons. Nor any in fresh chicken or pork chops. Look outside the food box. You'll feel a whole lot better for it!
  8. definition of auto-immune disease: Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. In other words, the body actually attacks its own cells. The immune system mistakes some part of the body as a pathogen and attacks it. This may be restricted to certain organs (e.g. in thyroiditis...
  9. anecdotally, I would say yes they are most definitely linked! I was gluten free for about 7 or 8 months, then started a gluten challenge and about 4 weeks into that my ears started screaming again. I've been gluten free again for not quite 2 months now, and my ears are still ringing horribly. I'm hoping it'll get quieter after a few months.
  10. I'm with Janie, only gluten free. NO cheating. Just because you maybe don't notice a reaction (though I'd hazard a guess and say that the bout of diarreah was a reaction!) doesn't mean the damage isn't being done. There are way too many severe health problems that can develop if you continue to eat gluten, I'm not willing to chance it. I went probably...
  11. I live in Morganton, and I find quite a lot of gluten free products at Ingles. Though I don't eat a lot of packaged foods, mostly whole natural foods. I don't drink soda/pop, so can't help you there, but I've found some really nice chocolate at Aldi that didn't cause me any problems. Last night I had a small piece and it was oh so yummy! Choceur Dark...
  12. my pleasure :-) there's actually quite a few Celiacs on the Atkins community forums, and given the "no grains" nature of the early phases of Atkins, it's a perfect eating plan!
  13. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE moose meat! Of course I can't get any down here in the Southern US. My poor husband has never even seen a live moose. And the deer down here in North Carolina are spindly little things compared to back home in Ontario.
  14. for fibre I use ground or milled flax meal. You can make bread, or muffins, or 'cereal' with it.
  15. mmmm...buffalo
  16. if you have pets, you might also consider switching them to a gluten free food. I have 2 dogs who are always all over me and slobbering all over the place. I'm going to switch them to grain free food. I'm hoping that the feed store where I bought their current food will let me just exchange the cans I have left for another brand. I usually mix kibble...
  17. Yep! Sounds like mine! HIS life is hell because I can't eat bread. ugh. And yet if I suggest he eat chicken for dinner, he accuses me of wanting to kill him. He has no physical ailment that would require he cannot eat chicken. He just won't touch it because he got sick on some poorly cooked chicken when he was 4! For YEARS I wouldn't even cook chicken...
  18. Perhaps we should all move to either Italy or Ireland! Both are extremely celiac disease friendly apparently.
  19. rather than think about all the foods you can't have, think about all the foods you CAN have. The latter far outweighs the former, I assure you
  20. chemically added nitrates used to preserve meats have been known carcinogens since the 1930s. Since the advent of refridgeration however, they are used less and less often, except for in bacon, deli sandwich meats, and sausages. I avoid all chemically added nitrates and buy only non-processed meats. I live in western North Carolina and there are a...
  21. if you have Celiac disease you're not a "normal person" though are you? The malabsorption issues with celiac or even gluten intolerance would suggest a higher dose multi-vitimin IMO. I too take the GNC Women's Ultra Mega without iodine and without iron. ($18.99 for 90 tabs in the US I think is fairly reasonable. They don't have the iodine free version...
  22. when I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease (hyperthyroid) the endocrinologist told me to avoid packaged foods and table salt, because of the iodine levels. I eat primarily a whole fresh foods diet, and I use kosher salt and sea salt only. The only "packaged" foods I eat are frozen vegetables and condiments like mayonnaise and salad dressing. The typical...
  23. I've had bad reactions to the adhesives as well. When I buy band-aids for home, I look for "hypoallergenic" on the label. I've had a few surgeries, and for the first one (emergency ecptopic removal) and I didn't have time to think about telling the surgeon to use paper surgical tape, when I woke up my belly was full of tape, and itching like crazy. Now...
  24. do your daughters have auto-immune thyroid diseases, or just general thyroid disorders? If they have auto-immune diseases, it could likely be linked to Celiac disease. For hyper thyroid, it's tricky and can be deadly if not properly managed on medications. If it is hyper from Grave's Disease, it *can* go into remission (mine did 3 years ago!). If it...
  25. How many IVF cycles have you done? What drugs do you take? It may be drug reactions. Hormones are nasty critters.
