  1. Welcome to the board. I, too, am a type 1 diabetic. There are a number of others here. Many gluten-free foods which are substitutes for "ordinary" foods are higher in fat and carbohydrate and lower in fiber. But what I found most significant was that after I went on a gluten-free diet, my intestines began to heal. As they healed, my ability to absorb...
  2. It is important to keep in mind that labeling rules vary depending on where you are. In both Canada and the United States, in an ingredient list, the single word "vinegar" refers exclusively to distilled white vinegar. Malt vinegar must be described as exactly that: "malt vinegar." Different rules apply elsewhere. Thanks for clarifying that, mushroom...
  3. It is generally accepted that distillation removes any gluten from the final product, whether it be alcohol or vinegar. Vinegar can be made from grains which are a source of gluten, but I have yet to find a distilled vinegar in North America that was. Most are corn, the rest are typically apple cider based. My comments apply only when the single word...
  4. Gluten is used as a glue or binder in solids and in viscous liquids such as gravies. Nothing that is administered IV or by any other form of injection is a worry with regards to gluten. The last thing on earth that you would want in such a substance is a thickener. I suppose that a topical anesthetic, such as used in dentistry prior to injecting the...
  5. Ahem. I do think that red wine would also be a requirement. I think I shall insist on Cabernet Sauvignon for mine.

    ARCHIVED Parasites

You may have them. It is not an official accreditation, but rather an abbreviation for "Lyme Literate Medical Doctor." It refers to an accredited Medical Doctor who views Lyme Disease outside the parameters accepted by many of their colleagues in the medical profession. The term is usually used by patients with Lyme disease.
  7. The added presence of sulphur dioxide does not in any way change the gluten-free status. If, like me, you accept that glucose syrup is so highly processed that only the sugar and none of the protein remains, then there are no worries.
  8. Yes, indeed. As I read what little factual information is contained in the message, I get the understanding that citrus fruit is safe. In fact, I believe that all produce is inherently safe. You have your interpretation; I have mine. They are different. Everyone must make a personal decision. I know what mine is.
  9. A dreary and wet morning has given way to a lovely, mild, sunny afternoon.
  10. There is a genetic component, which is hereditary. However, not everybody with the genetic predisposition will develop the disease. The disease needs to be triggered, and this portion is not as well understood. The vast majority of with the genes never develop the disease itself.
  11. The autoimmune nature of celiac disease means the the immune system is acting outside expected patterns. I would not necessarily say that it indicates a weakened immune system. You might argue that it indicates an over-active immune system.
  12. Maybe you did, but it isn't true. If it was, we would be able to drink beer, wouldn't we? I do recall a post that claimed that gluten was soluble in alcohol, but that isn't relevant, even if true.
  13. Where are all the sillies? It sure is quiet here...
  14. Good morning, all. Is what I currently see on the first page of the emoticons, as I compose this. But they are different every time.
  15. I can not tell from the information you provided just what test was positive. A number of tests related to Celiac Disease involve IgA factors. The test panel may include: Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG-IgA) -- A screening test is commonly used when an individual is in a risk group for Celiac Disease, whether or not he/she has symptoms. This test...
  16. We just think that they are really cool. Light rain at the moment, but for a while it was just throwing it down. Light rain is expected to continue into the early evening. Using a cat instead of an iron has merit. It takes less effort, and in my line of work if you have cat fur on your clothes it is not really out of place.
  17. The term refers to an historic Spanish coin worth 8 reales. They were widely used around the time Spain was trying to take over the New World.
  18. Good morning, all. I'm dephinately pheeling squiggly at the moment--is anybody else?
  19. The rain started here about three hours ago, and it is expected to last into the weekend. But we need it--it has been very dry here.
  20. Patti's love affair with Steve will not last. I don't know about the weather, but a certain member of my family refers to that as "ground beef."
  21. No. Celiac disease can not be diagnosed by a colonoscopy. Damage caused by celiac disease is to the small intestine, not the colon. An endoscopy is used to check for celiac damage to the villi. It is common, though, to do both procedures at the same time.
  22. Hey, where did Psoozee go? Has anyone seen her?
  23. They don't seem to cause me much of a problem. Perhaps it is because I am using lispro (Humalog) which has a different action pattern than regular insulin.
  24. Good morning, psillies! Partly cloudy this, morning, with rain on the way this afternoon. Jess, fresh meat for breakfast! What more could you ask for?
