ARCHIVED Enterolab
psawyer replied to confusedks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't have any specific information on the topic, but I have always had this question in my mind: Has ANYBODY ever been found NEGATIVE for gluten intolerance in an Enterolab test? I have only ever heard of positive test results from Dr Fine. If we believe that the incidence in the population is about two percent, there should be a lot of negative... -

It is generally accepted in North America that caramel color is safe. Mostly it is derived from corn, but even if it isn't, the processing involved eliminates any gluten from the final product. I said "generally accepted," and I fully expect Steve Lord (gfp) to jump in here and disagree. Steve and I agree to disagree on the safety of some things. Most...

ARCHIVED Bouillon Cubes?
psawyer replied to momof2sn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would not be worried about the caramel color. Many bouillon cubes use wheat flour (gluten) to hold the cubes together. If you can find bouillon powder there is a much higher likelihood that it will be gluten-free. We use Bovril beef bouillon powder in foil pouches; it is gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Hershey Canada Lowney Cherry Blossom
psawyer replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My understanding is that Hershey will not hide gluten. It will be clearly disclosed in the ingredient list using one of the words: wheat, rye, barley, or oat. If none of these words appear in the ingredient list, enjoy! I don't eat many sweets, and haven't had a Cherry Blossom in about 20 years, but I do recall enjoying them when I was young. -

Lynne, I'm delighted to hear that things turned out well for you. I'm thinking of you, even if I don't post that often anymore (I read regularly). -
ARCHIVED Another Pet Food Question
psawyer replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link. Cat food is nutritionally adequate for the needs of a ferret. It contains higher concentrations of protein than required, but this is not usually a problem. -

Not all vitamin E is from wheat germ oil. There are numerous other possible sources. Wheat germ oil has a high concentration, but many other vegetable oils are good sources. It can also be synthetic, as d, l-alpha-tocopherol. The Canadian Celiac Association considers tocopherols (vitamin E) to be safe for celiacs, according to the 2006 edition of their... -
ARCHIVED They Still Don't Know What Exactly Caused The Pets To Get Sick...
psawyer replied to Nancym's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Actually, quite a few brands were included in the expanded recall. The products involved in the latest recall do not contain the suspect ingredient, but were produced in the same cannery at the same time and the recall is due to concern about possible cross-contamination on shared facilities. As celiacs, we can all understand this concern. They wash the equpment... -
ARCHIVED Made In Canada
psawyer replied to majicbunnies's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am not aware of any law specifically respecting cross-contamination. As stated above, in Canada, if any part of the prohibited grains is present, the product can not be represented as "gluten-free." Any detectable amount would render the claim false, so it is a question of how sensitive a test is used. There is no "permissible" amount. When investigating... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Yorkshire Pudding Recipe
psawyer replied to little-c's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yorkshire Pudding (Gluten-Free) I can't get the columns to work; there are two values on each row following, to make enough for two or four servings. To make more, just increase the quantities, that is, for eight servings, double the amounts for four. Enjoy! Persons served: 2 4 chick pea flour 50g 100g rice flour 5... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Find A Great Hamburger Bun?
psawyer replied to kdean823's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We like the Glutino buns. They are made from corn flour, and are a bit tougher in texture than the wheat flour ones that I once ate. But they are very good, especially if lightly toasted. Visit Open Original Shared Link to learn more. -
ARCHIVED Made In Canada
psawyer replied to majicbunnies's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here is the applicable Canadian regulation. It applies to food sold in Canada, but food sold outside Canada may not have to adhere to the rule. Food and Drug Regulation B.24.018 No person shall label, package, sell or advertise a food in a manner likely to create an impression that it is gluten-free unless the food does not contain wheat, including... -
It sounds like you have a list which is at best misleading. The examples you mention should not be considered "forbidden," but rather as representing conceivable sources of gluten. If you have doubts about them, you should check with the manufacturer, but in most cases they are not a concern. Also, be aware that there are a number of manufacturers who...

ARCHIVED Quinoa
psawyer replied to Samanthasmomma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, quinoa (KEEN-wah) is gluten free, and thus flour made from it is also gluten free. -
I met with my Hill's representative today and asked him this question. The Feline m/d is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate formula. He said it is like the Atkins diet for cats. Because there is not enough carbohydrate to hold the kibble together, they use processed wheat gluten instead. It does not provide calories through carbohydrates, but has the adhesive...

ARCHIVED Kraft Blue Cheese Dressing
psawyer replied to pnltbox27's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kraft will clearly disclose any source of gluten. If you did not see it in the ingredients, it isn't there. Look for the specific words wheat, rye, barley or oats. I can't offer personal knowledge on this product, I simply don't like bleu cheese so I don't use this dressing. There are only two or three Kraft dressings that are NOT gluten-free. We use the... -
Del Monte has now issued a recall for Beef Jerky Treats, regardless of production date, as a precautionary measure. This includes Beef Jerky Treats distributed in Canada.

To date, no kibble of any brand sold in retail stores has been recalled. There have been two very specific recalls pertaining to veterinary channel products, one made by Hill's and one made by Iams (Eukanuba); these two products are sold only by veterinarians to treat specific special needs. Menu Foods does not make any dry food. They only make wet food...

ARCHIVED Ingredients
psawyer replied to holdthegluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, all vinegars are safe except for malt vinegar. With the exception of malt vinegar, all other types are distilled. The process of distillation is generally accepted as not allowing any gluten to pass into the final product. Some people disagree, and I am sure that they will post soon enough. I don't worry about vinegar other than malt vinegar. Wine vinegar...
