ARCHIVED Not Sure Where To Post This
psawyer replied to lichjen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There are many common carbs that are sources of gluten. The obvious ones include pasta and baked goods such as bread, pizza, cakes, and so forth. There are many carbs that are gluten-free. Examples include fruits, potatoes, corn and rice. Gluten can hide in places other than carbs. You would not ordinarily consider soup or broth to be carbs, but often... -
Are you newly diagnosed with celiac disease, or suspect that you have it? If so, your intestines have been damaged and are just now beginning to heal. During the healing process, you may react to foods for no reason at all, or due to something other than gluten. Reactions to fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods containing lactose (milk sugar) are common during...

ARCHIVED Would You Eat These Chips?
psawyer replied to RPM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would eat them. They know what they are doing. Testing for 3ppm is a serious approach. That is as sensitive as you can get. -
ARCHIVED ? On An Ad I Read On Celiac.com
psawyer replied to mamaw's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
The ads tagged "celiac.com sponsor" are vetted by Scott and must promote products which support the gluten-free diet. Ads by Google are a source of revenue to keep the board running--and free to all members. The are based on personal activity online. I recently bought a replacement portable computer online. All of a sudden, I was getting ads by Google... -
ARCHIVED Eczema & The Small Pox Vaccine
psawyer replied to plumbago's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Smallpox? That disease was declared eradicated more than thirty years ago. Any increase in the incidence of eczema today is unrelated. -
ARCHIVED Lip Products
psawyer replied to confusedandlost's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Okay, returning to the original question. It was kind of widespread about "lip products," so I thought about cosmetics. I don't use lipsick--probably a "guy" thing. I do use Chapstick, especially in the winter when it is dry. There is no ingredient in it that would be a concern, and I have been using it without problems since before my diagnosis in... -
ARCHIVED Things People Say To Celiacs
psawyer replied to researchmomma's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The debate about the Eucharist is a topic in and of itself that has been discussed many times before. It is not relevant to the topic here. Google Eucharist or Communion in the search bar to find prior discussions about that. -
ARCHIVED Lip Products
psawyer replied to confusedandlost's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Asking for a gluten-free guarantee is asking for a "no" answer. Most companies do not test their ingredients, or the finished product, so they can not guarantee anything. Even those companies that spend the extra money to test (and cost more as a result) can ONLY make a claim based on the sensitivity of their test. Many test for 20 ppm, some for 10 ppm, and... -
ARCHIVED Sneezing
psawyer replied to BarryC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The chicken at KFC is breaded and loaded with gluten. -
ARCHIVED What Wines Are Gluten Free
psawyer replied to Angie1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't speak to the yeast question, but in nearly twelve years on the diet I have never found a wine that was not gluten-free. -
The genes are common among those of Caucasian European background. There is also a higher consumption of wheat-based goods in that culture. In western society, everybody eats a lot of wheat. Your poll choices seem incomplete. You allow for Arabic, although Arabia is part of Asia, which is also an option. I suppose there are some Arabic people in North...

ARCHIVED Celiac Damage Visible To The Naked Eye On Endoscopy?
psawyer replied to sarahcf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If the damage is severe enough, it may be detectable to the naked eye. In most cases it is not. Even when visible damage is present, the biopsy is indicated to confirm the cause. As noted, to do the endoscopy and not the biopsy reflects very poorly on the doctor. -
ARCHIVED No Name Brand Corn Chips
psawyer replied to joyjoy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't have a No Name chips package here to look at, but what makes you suspect them? I have never encountered corn chips that had gluten in them. I would look at the salsa first. -

ARCHIVED Don't Know How To Interpret Husband's Results

ARCHIVED Don't Know How To Interpret Husband's Results
psawyer replied to dancergirlmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Two tests do not make up a complete panel, but those results are in the normal range, in other words, negative. -
Since so many of us have other intolerances beyond gluten, this makes a lot of sense to me. Just because you have an adverse reaction to a product does not necessarily mean that it contains gluten. That is true of all of us, not just those who are super-sensitive. I do not consider myself to be super-sensitive. I do react to small amounts of gluten. I...

ARCHIVED The Hersheys Company
psawyer replied to alucard4545's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is a common response from companies that have a comprehensive gluten-disclosure policy. They will not produce a list of gluten-free products. They will tell you to read the label, since gluten will be clearly disclosed there, and the label is relevant to the product you are actually dealing with. There have been some evasive responses to questions... -
ARCHIVED Another Chapstick Thread
psawyer replied to joyjoy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is a free world. People can do what they want. Some people get scared when the company won't make a gluten-free claim for legal reasons. I am not one of those people. In more than eleven years, I have yet to have a problem. -
ARCHIVED Another Chapstick Thread
psawyer replied to joyjoy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Chapstick does not contain any gluten, but the manufacturer (like most mainstream manufacturers) does not test for possible contamination. That is about as good as it gets for most consumer products. I use it without trouble on occasion. My wife goes through it like crazy, especially in the winter. -
ARCHIVED Benefits To "official" Diagnosis
psawyer replied to AHopewell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Having a diagnosis can be useful in certain situations where you must depend on others. Having the document ensures that schools and the like must take your dietary needs seriously, and you can demand reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Having a diagnosis can, however, lead to difficulties in obtaining insurance.... -
ARCHIVED Soy Sauce- Not Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to cassP's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Will Celiac Disease Go Away Once My Leaky Gut Is Gone?
psawyer replied to alicewa's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My understanding is that celiac disease is a life-long autoimmune disorder. You cannot outgrow it. Once activated, celiac disease will cause an autoimmune response to gluten. The antibodies will attack various parts of your body, particularly the villi in your upper intestine. Alice, I know you want to hope that you can go back to eating gluten. But... -
Hey, Molly, good to hear from you.

ARCHIVED Are Fries At Mcdonalds In The Us Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to amber's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is a wheat-derived ingredient in the beef flavor. A small amount of the flavoring is added to the oil in which the fries are partially fried prior to being frozen. A small amount of oil is absorbed. The frying process is completed at the store. The oil used at that stage is pure vegetable oil. The finished product has been independently tested and...
