ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Dry Onion Soup Mix
sa1937 replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also bought a box of that, too...either from Food Lion or Giant. I gave it to my DIL. I do have one box of the old left after which I'm going to make my own from the recipe on food.com. -
Nor do I. Granted, it's a pain in the a$$ sometimes and baking is a challenge but it definitely gets easier with time. My first gluten free shopping trip took forever but I think that's to be expected. Also, lots of good recipes have been posted on this site.

ARCHIVED Looking For Store-Bought gluten-free Shampoo And Conditioner
sa1937 replied to srfjeld's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Suave shampoo and conditioner. I also love Soft Soap in my shower and have at all my sinks, too (I buy the big size to refill smaller pump bottles). All are inexpensive and available everywhere. I also bought CeraVe Moisturizing Cream at Wal-Mart, which someone here posted is gluten free. I ditched my Bath & Body Works products. For facial... -

ARCHIVED Found A Fantastic Gluten Free Baking Book
sa1937 replied to lilbit's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I never saw any teff flour there but I had only been in just once (right after diagnosis) before they moved to their new location. I paid $1.50 for 16 oz. for sweet rice flour so I guess "cheap" is relative. I have ordered ivory teff from Open Original Shared Link (recommended by RiceGuy some time ago). Their prices are great but then you have to add in... -
ARCHIVED Found A Fantastic Gluten Free Baking Book
sa1937 replied to lilbit's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That's why I bought another coffee grinder and it has a larger capacity than the one I've used for coffee. I think she also mentions using a blender to get a finer grind of brown rice flour. I haven't seen brown rice flour at my Asian store but they recently moved and need better shelving so were very low on any rice flour when I was last in. I did... -
ARCHIVED Found A Fantastic Gluten Free Baking Book
sa1937 replied to lilbit's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Since I only tried the one pie crust recipe, perhaps I should give it another shot...just in case I screwed up. I had a lot going on the day I made it. I used regular brown rice flour but in the meantime I bought another coffee grinder to make it finer. No Authentic Foods super fine flour around here. I think my dislike probably had something to do with... -
ARCHIVED Found A Fantastic Gluten Free Baking Book
sa1937 replied to lilbit's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I recently bought this cookbook and have only tried one recipe...the Traditional Pie Crust. I was less than thrilled with it. Rolled it out fine but it completely fell apart when I tried to put it in the pie plate. I ended up patching it up and pressing it into the pan. I didn't care for the taste of the crust either. Maybe it was because I used... -
You're welcome, Rowena! Let us know if you try any good bread recipes.

I have some Vance's Dari-Free (the original) that I bought at my local health food store. I've only used it once and really don't like the smell of it. Maybe it's just me ??? Living Without magazine also has a suggestion, and I don't know if this is a subscriber article or not but here's a partial quote: Open Original Shared Link "Other ingredients...

ARCHIVED Oats At A Gluten Free Bakery
sa1937 replied to tbritt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the clarification, Patti! I recently bought a package of BRM gluten free oats but haven't tried it yet. I need to wait until after Thanksgiving and then also make sure I have a few days where I don't have to go anywhere just in case I do react. I really do miss oatmeal and haven't had it since going gluten free on April 9. -
ARCHIVED Oats At A Gluten Free Bakery
sa1937 replied to tbritt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought Bob's Red Mill gluten free products were made in a dedicated facility and were batch tested. Can someone please correct me if I'm just dreaming it, am confused or just plain mistaken??? -
Another thing that works well to measure half a batch of something is a digital postal scale if you have one. I've done that with a dry soup mix that made a lot and measured it into ZipLoc bags. Works great. I also use a small measuring glass made by Anchor that has measurements in tsp., tbsp, oz. and ml. It holds just over 1/2 cup so is great for measuring...

ARCHIVED Intense Sugar Cravings (Gluten Intolerance)
sa1937 replied to krishna's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you ever tried Lactaid milk? I seem to do fine with it but cannot seem to tolerate cheese. I know Lactaid tablets are also available but they don't work for me. I just picked up Dairy-Zymes (made by Bluebonnet) from my local health food store although I haven't tried them yet so I don't know if they would work better than Lactaid tablets. -
ARCHIVED Your Favorite Dessert Recipe?
sa1937 replied to TPT's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OMG, this sounds good and exceedingly rich! I just printed out the recipe. Thanks! Do you use an 8" cake pan or a springform pan? I think it would be easy to get out of a springform pan (perhaps using some type of chocolate crumb crust). -
I've tried Schar and do like it, as well as Tinkyada. I've bought Sam Mills but haven't tried it yet and it was inexpensive at $1.99/lb. I recently found Heartland at Wal-Mart for $1.98/12 oz. Tried the spaghetti and liked it. They have 3 shapes available. I understand about the rural area...we don't have a Whole Foods or Wegman's in sight.

ARCHIVED Finding Non-Bitter Quinoa Flour
sa1937 replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the recipe...sounds yummy! Just curious as to what brand quinoa you buy. I have Ancient Harvest that is already pre-washed. I just bought another coffee grinder that will be dedicated to using with grains. -
ARCHIVED Nickel Allergy And Celiac Disease
sa1937 replied to MollyBeth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm a yellow gold person as I never liked white gold but wasn't aware that it contained nickel. My daughter is also gluten free (had a very positive DGP test in late Aug. but skipped the endoscopy/biopsy) and is able to wear inexpensive costume jewelry without a problem. However her daughter (my granddaughter) has a nickel allergy. She's going to be... -
ARCHIVED Nickel Allergy And Celiac Disease
sa1937 replied to MollyBeth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have the same nickel allergy problem and have never been able to wear inexpensive dept. store jewelry, especially earrings. In fact, I've had this for my entire life. And I was just diagnosed with celiac in April with positive blood tests as well as endoscopy/biopsy. There is a company who makes inexpensive nickel-free jewelry and I'm able to wear... -
ARCHIVED Apple Crisp With Steel Cut Oats
sa1937 replied to punkinrice's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Personally I wouldn't trust steel cut oats unless they are specifically gluten-free...not sure how they'd work for a topping for apple crisp either. I've only been gluten free for 7 months and have not yet tried oats. Roben Ryberg has a recipe in The Gluten Free Kitchen for apple crisp with a streusel topping and I found it here (scroll down to message... -
ARCHIVED Advice About Vit D And Vit B12
sa1937 replied to Mari's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just bought some Bluebonnet Chewable Vitamin D3 (raspberry flavor). Open Original Shared Link Free of milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans. Also free of yeast, gluten, barley, rice and sodium. -
ARCHIVED What's The Deal With Post's Fruity Pebbles Cereal?
sa1937 replied to JennyW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I always liked Kix, too. I don't see any offending ingredients listed and I do eat them occasionally. General Mills is pretty cautious about putting the gluten free label on their foods. Perhaps they're manufactured in a shared facility or on shared lines. -
ARCHIVED TreSemme Gluten-Free Products
sa1937 replied to Ruth Talbott's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've used both a TreSemme shampoo and conditioner without any problems. But I have no idea if either one is gluten free. Sorry...I'm afraid I'm not much help. -
