You are gluten intolerant. What happens is that the "assault" on your immune system stops when you stop eating gluten. If you are intolerant and try to go back to wheat, you get freshly activated T cells that make you quite sick. Remember, it is not unusual at all to go between foods. Think of something you might not have eaten for a few months, like...

ARCHIVED 16 Month Old, Negative Blood Test
Skylark replied to Briana's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can do that. The problem is that she will have to eat gluten for 2-3 months at some point down the road for a diagnosis. If you can't get a diagnosis now for whatever reason and suspect gluten intolerance, that is a reasonable thing to try. -
ARCHIVED Hypothyroidism - Reaction To Levothyroxin Pills
Skylark replied to Pac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
"Too young to be hypo" is stupid too. I've been on thyroid medicine since I was 20. As Nora says, overdosing symptoms are really common at first. Call your doctor and ask if it's OK to break the pills in half for a little while before you go on the full dose. -
ARCHIVED A Wondering Medical Student
Skylark replied to BlueMerlin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dairy is worth considering, as is soy. Also, some celiacs are much more sensitive to traces of gluten than your medical training may lead you to believe. I always suggest celiacs who are having problems switch over to a gluten-free/casein-free diet and eliminate as many processed foods as possible. It really helped me. Basically, you eat things you can... -
ARCHIVED 16 Month Old, Negative Blood Test

The benefit to the official diagnosis is once she's in school. You can't get a 504 plan that forces the school to take her gluten-free diet seriously without the diagnosis. Some parents are lucky enough to have compassionate teachers that wouldn't dream of giving a celiac kid wheat, but others have to fight tooth and nail to keep their kids gluten-free. -
Lincoln, you've been had. I hope this charlatan didn't charge you too much money to recount all the health problems she talked about with your mother.

Let's see. For Thanksgiving Mom and I made turkey with cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy thickened with cornstarch, cranberry salad, baked apples, steamed broccoli, and crustless pumpkin pie for dessert. (We only care about the filling anyway. ) Cleansing teas are fine to drink, as long as you check them for gluten ingredients. Barley or... -
Good question. That's easy enough to test, although my understanding is that GMO corn and pesticides are in organic products more often than not. I thought of that too and I can't rule it out, especially since the most recent corn thing I maybe reacted to was Fritos. I can't get corn on the cob this time of year but I could buy some frozen corn, pick...

ARCHIVED Blood Results
Skylark replied to BeHappy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The problem with the celiac tests is that with her relatively low IgA, they could be false negative. The celiac IgA tests lose sensitivity when there isn't much IgA around and frankly they aren't that great to start with. That's why Shroomie is suggesting the IgG versions. Her recommendations are very good, especially the deamidated gliadin peptide IgG... -

Mommyoftwinks, have you tried the diet? That is the ultimate test. -
ARCHIVED What Would You Do?

Mixups happen. I would have her independently retested to be sure her sample wasn't swapped with someone else. You could order one of the home test kits if the cost is lower than your deductible on blood testing. Open Original Shared Link If she has celiac bloodwork on retest, I would personally take her gluten-free. Celiac is not only a stomach disease... -
Usually your waiter will bring the gluten-free menu if the restaurant has one. When you order, tell the waiter that you are ordering off the gluten-free menu. If you are very sensitive and need to find out how strictly they are segregating the gluten-free food to decide whether you are comfortable eating there, then you would talk to the manager.

Skylark replied to norahsmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sure sounds like you have gluten intolerance. All the symptoms you describe really fit. Some sausages have grain fillers. You might test one more time with something really simple like French bread or Triscuits if you're not convinced it wasn't just a dose of junk food. I don't know about the scratch tests. I scratch tested positive to wheat as... -

ARCHIVED Feeling A Rush When Eating L-Glutamin Or Fish
Skylark replied to moggio's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I wouldn't worry too much, especially if you're feeling better every day. Some people get really hungry at first, crave particular foods, or seem to just burn through what they eat once they go gluten-free. It's your body going "Oh my gosh, I can get what I need from food and repair!" Give it a little more time. A month is not long at all. -
ARCHIVED Just Had Biopsy- Covered In Hd And Scared
Skylark replied to CrazyforCandles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Don't worry. The diet takes some getting used to, but you'll feel SO much better! We do eat a lot of meat, fruit, nuts, legumes, and veggies. But there's also rice, potatoes, quinoa, amaranth, millet, and other gluten-free grains. You can get starch mixes with a little xanthan gum that are fine for baking and make just about anything you miss. It's... -

ARCHIVED Feeling A Rush When Eating L-Glutamin Or Fish
Skylark replied to moggio's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Some people do get sort of a relaxed alcohol-like feeling from L-glutamine. As for the fish, you might try taking some fish oil. You must have been malabsorbing fats and now you're trying to make up for the deficiency with cravings. -
ARCHIVED Poll: gluten-free Diet - Easy Or Hard
Skylark replied to tarnalberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cooking gluten-free is not particularly hard; the hard thing is the overall impact on my lifestyle. I barely ever eat out, and I have to cook a lot more than I would otherwise. I used to love to explore "hole in the wall" ethnic restaurants, and that is not an option for me any more because I cannot generally communicate my needs well enough. Traveling... -
I don't think fecal IgA is well enough established as a testing method. Just because it's scientifically feasible does not automatically give it clinical meaning. I might look into RAST.

ARCHIVED 3 + Biopsies, - Blood Test. Confused
Skylark replied to lorid888's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, heck. It doesn't matter whether you're celiac or not then. If it makes you sick, don't eat it! If you have a positive biopsy and feel horrible when you eat gluten I can't imagine you won't get diagnosed with celiac anyway. -
You act as if it's the doctor's fault, and not that of 99% of American patients who walk into a doctor's office wanting a pill. Lifestyle changes are the single hardest thing for doctors to ask Americans to do. Most would rather take pills than lose weight, quit smoking, eat a low-sodium diet, exercise, drink less alcohol, or any of the other recommendations...

If you are suspecting refractory sprue, you need an absolutely clean diet. Refractory sprue is a serious health condition. Your doctor is absolutely wrong about bites of pizza and so forth, and it's been demonstrated in studies. Not only should you avoid that, but I'd suggest you avoid processed foods for a time and eat home-cooked meats, vegetables, rice...
