ARCHIVED Explain This To Me Like I'm 2 Years Old
Skylark replied to conniebky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Like you're two... Can we go for ten? Celiac disease means your body is trying to damage your own intestine. The result is that your villi take on funny shapes, not flattening out but something that looks more like when you hold all your fingers together rather than spreading them out. If you stop eating gluten your intestine will heal and the fingers... -
ARCHIVED Is It Safe To Use The Family's Waffle Machine?
Skylark replied to vegiac980's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would use one that has the plates that come out and can be cleaned well, but I'm not crazy sensitive. -
ARCHIVED Wait, What? Can A Doctor Suggest Celiac Base On This?

No wonder you're confused. I am too! Can you call the office and ask? -
ARCHIVED Really Interesting Results From Avoiding Gluten

I would make a terrible parent. I would have told her to tell a "white lie" that she has celiac too. -
ARCHIVED Home Testing
Skylark replied to Bettie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry, I assumed you were on the US side of the pond. We don't get any help over here with gluten-free food so there isn't really a point to getting a diagnosis. Yes, stick to doctors and good luck with it. -
ARCHIVED Wait, What? Can A Doctor Suggest Celiac Base On This?
Skylark replied to Looking for answers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Looking for Answers (gee, you need a better handle) said she was reposting because the results she put in the other thread were wrong. The 381 number was apparently total IgA. We still don't have the TTG IgG number her doctor is talking about. -
ARCHIVED Dinner Date..how Do I Break The News?
Skylark replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dude, you're freaking out. You are not telling this girl you have terminal cancer and six months to live! How would you react if a date asked for allergy information and mentioned she has a severe peanut allergy? You might be concerned but it wouldn't be a big deal, right? Do what you always do in a restaurant. Ask for the gluten-free menu, or... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Please!
Skylark replied to shacon-bacon's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sounds terrible. I bet it's the vitamins. From oneaday.com: Q. How much gluten does this contain? A. We do not add any gluten to our products. However, we cannot guarantee that all raw materials are 100% gluten-free. One-A-Day vitamins are junk anyway. They mostly go straight through you because the vitamins are the cheapest sort possible that are... -
ARCHIVED Paroxetine Hydrochloride (paxil) & Gluten
Skylark replied to susiequsie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I about lost my mind going off Effexor. I had to buy empty capsules from the health food store and I was counting the little beads for weeks and weeks tapering the dose. Every time I tried to stop I was getting "brain zaps". Ugh. I think I could finally quit when I got down to three little beads in the capsule. And yeah, SSRIs are brutal if you... -
ARCHIVED Home Testing
Skylark replied to Bettie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Biocard tests are very good if you are not IgA deficient, but they don't test for gluten intolerance. There are no prescriptions for celiac disease, so I'm not sure what you expect from the diagnosis. The treatment is a gluten-free diet. -
ARCHIVED New Blood Test
Skylark replied to hercules25's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, your results are much more consistent with Crohn's. That double S. cerevisiae result is particularly diagnostic for Crohn's. I saw an interesting paper by a GI doc where he said that a lot of non-celiac people with inflammatory bowel diseases feel better off wheat. He believes the fructans in wheat feed intestinal bacteria that are causing problems... -
ARCHIVED Wait, What? Can A Doctor Suggest Celiac Base On This?
Skylark replied to Looking for answers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The three tests you have posted are within the reference ranges. That means the results are normal. Where is the elevated tTG IgG that your doctor is referring to? That would be a sign of autoimmunity. -
Why does everyone think WE need fixing, and not the US wheat-heavy diet? Don't give me a drug or shots. I'm perfectly fine. Just get the gluten out of everyone's food!

ARCHIVED New Here!
Skylark replied to LauraBeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Laura Beth and welcome. Five days is not enough to throw off the celiac blood tests. Thing is, they have high false negative rate (probably about 20%) so you could still be celiac. With your positive genetic test the thing to do is stick to the diet and see if it helps all your issues. It will take your body a while to heal since all your vitamin... -
ARCHIVED Help! Not Sure What To Do About Diet
Skylark replied to yogismith's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Go for lots of fruits and veggies, rice, and beans. They're cheap and don't have so many calories. Peanut butter is filling too. I like it with celery, rice cakes, or on apple slices. I also used to eat a lot of eggs in college because they were cheap and easy to cook. Also, you only need to avoid dairy or lactose if they bother you. If cheese doesn... -
ARCHIVED Something New With Larabars? Possible Problems
Skylark replied to DaffodElle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Newbie Anorexic With Neural Symptoms
Skylark replied to twinkle-toez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the self-diagnosed club. I'm actually glad to hear you went back off gluten rather than giving yourself the chance to relapse. The thought patterns sound truly awful. Maybe gluten-free you won't have any more anorexic episodes. My bipolar cleared up, and good riddance! I hope your fiance was one of the people who has become supportive... -
ARCHIVED Really Interesting Results From Avoiding Gluten
Skylark replied to Smarts's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What do you mean you don't have test results? You have villous atrophy and feel better off gluten. That's celiac disease in a nutshell. Even if you don't have the genes it doesn't matter, as there are some people with celiac who don't have DQ2 or DQ8. I agree that you should get the girls tested. Having a formal diagnosis might make things easier in... -
ARCHIVED Assuming Some Foods Are Gluten Free
Skylark replied to MWIXON's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll eat things like cut fruit or sliced cheese that I can clearly identify but I'm not ultra-sensitive. I pay attention to where the bread/crackers are on a buffet and stay away from the "crumb zone". I do usually take my chances with plain corn chips but I won't eat flavored ones. I don't think I would have trusted the dip without asking, although I... -
Good catch! Thanks.

ARCHIVED The Celiac Clock Is Ticking
Skylark replied to Allisoprano's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I use Immodium for diarrhea, switch to Pepto the next day for the stomachaches. If it's bad I switch to eating white rice and broth for a couple days. I get anxiety too, so I use inositol and kava if I'm desparate. Good luck. -
I agree with not going back to gluten, particularly with the results your allergist found. Between the Marsh I biopsy and a delayed reaction to gluten it's clearly a problem for you. celiac blood tests have a high false positive rate even in people eating gluten. It almost sounds like you need to seek a second opinion or find someone with more expertise...

I take NuFerm FermPlus capsules when I need a probiotic and it's never given me trouble. I do take a lower dose the first week because a while back I did have D from a full dose of a different probiotic. Is the one you're taking definitely gluten-free?

ARCHIVED Back On Gluten For Testing... Now Worse! Help!
Skylark replied to KimKF's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Give her a big hug tonight and whatever medicine you usually use to help her feel better. Tomorrow tell your GI exactly what's going on, how she's suffering, and that you really want to take her gluten-free even though she hasn't had a biopsy. Maybe he can schedule the biopsy quickly if he wants to do one. And yeah, Triscuits on a sensitive stomach might... -

You need to talk to the manager. They should not be treating a loyal customer that way and I bet they'll want to set things right.
