  1. That's wonderful that you figured out the cause of your daughter's seizures! As you realize, the phrases we use to describe gluten intolerance are not as well-defined as one would like. There can be autoimmune reactions in the nervous system that are initiated by gluten and stop when gluten is removed from the diet, just like intestinal celiac sprue...
  2. Are you sure you don't have allergies to other cosmetic ingredients? I have always had to be careful about shampoo, cosmetic, and deodorants, and it has nothing to do with gluten ingredients. My skin is just sensitive and I have to find brands by trial and error. I can't use deodorant soaps for example, as the triclosan makes my skin angry and red.
  3. For me, it was cow casein. I had to avoid all cow dairy, and even skip the nondairy creamers and butter or I got a stomach-ache. I could eat goat and sheep dairy, so I was able to get my cheese fix that way.
  4. Depends on your individual tolerance to gluten. Some people are not bothered. Others who are pretty sensitive find that we react occasionally to "same equipment" labeled food. There are some folks on this board so sensitive they won't touch it, and they also have to avoid distilled vinegar and other foods that are usually safe for celiacs. If you don...
  5. Ewwwww. If you're going to destroy your body do it with something better than a Big Mac! I mean come on, a nice steak and a baked potato is better and gluten free! Seriously, if you've been diagnosed celiac it doesn't matter whether you react much to wheat. Your body will go right back to destroying itself and as Lucia said you risk intestinal cancer...
  6. I believe you misread it. The writing in that article is terrible. It says that HFCS is a problem for corn sensitive people. The second half of that confusing sentence says modified food starch is the ingredient that can be made from different grains. Modified food starch can be made from wheat, but in the US if it's made from wheat the product must...
  7. Hi there and welcome. Sorry you're having so much trouble. Let's see. In English, you came up positive for an antibody that is very specific to celiac disease. There are three different antibodies that can show up in your bloodstream. AGA/IgA is antigliadin, a direct reaction to gluten. TTG/IgA is an autoimmune antibody. Sometimes it's positive in...
  8. "Pseudo allergies" that respond to antihistamines? Boy, that's creative. One thing that can happen is that ozone and other pollutants tend to increase on high pollen count days. The same atmospheric conditions that trap pollen also trap pollutants. If you have sensitive sinuses and lungs, you may be reacting more generally to respiratory irritants...
  9. By "carbohydrate intolerance" do you mean FOADMAP foods? There are some people who have gut issues when they eat FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, and Mono-saccharides, And Polyols). Some are fructose intolerant too, meaning they don't absorb fructose properly. And yes, potatoes are lower FODMAP than grains. Open Original Shared Link Could also be lectins...
  10. I think Ravenwoodglass's suggestion of an allergist is a good one. I personally went down to lamb, rice, lettuce, and pears. The main reason lamb is used is because it's not very allergenic, and Americans don't tend to eat it a lot so we're not sensitized. Game meats work well too. For you, I'd go with deep sea fish, though you'll have to pay attention...
  11. There is no gluten in vegetables. Maybe you are misunderstanding the book?
  12. Tolerances for traces of gluten varies among celiacs, but beer has WAY too much gluten for anyone with celiac disease. Barley is every bit as poisonous to your body as wheat. Malt liquor and the malt alcohol in some coolers is also a problem. As Mushroom says, there is gluten-free beer on the market now including Redbridge and Green's. You can also have...
  13. I hope you don't get too sick. I'd report them to the FDA. That label is illegal and dangerous. Open Original Shared Link
  14. If you feel like caffeine might help, go for it! If nothing else, a favorite tea might be soothing. Red Bull has lots of B vitamins too and some people find it helpful for glutenings. I don't get crying jags often. For me it's a weird jumpiness, like suddenly I'll have this spurt of adrenaline and be super-worried over nothing. It will happen in...
  15. My understanding is that blood tests aren't very sensitive for inhaled allergens like pollen. Allergists have always done skin pricks on me. It doesn't matter that much with pollen unless you're trying to get allergy shots because about all you can do is take a little antihistamine.
  16. @MacktheKnife - You made my day! I MISS real licorice. Black Jelly Bellies just don't quite cut it. I had been eating Licorice Altoids for my fix but they're not the same. I went looking for that Orgran licorice and it came up at Amazon. I noticed gluten-free licorice lariats in the related links by chance that look perfect for the craft project....
  17. Maybe you can get a coumpounding pharmacy to make you the OTC drugs you need in a gluten-free form. Also with the Claritin it is possible to have a side effect suddenly start bothering you. Drowsiness is a well-known side effect of that medicine.
  18. Mine varies Yesterday: Coffee & a banana for breakfast Larabar snack Late lunch with the Safeway rice noodle soup Dinner: salmon, rice, baby bok choy, a few fresh lychees (I stopped by a local Korean grocery store after work) Today: Breakfast: Egg, some leftover rice Lunch: Udi's muffin. (LOL!) Couple lychees Dinner: Cooking lamb shanks...
  19. That's great news! So glad it's working out for you.
  20. I've been doing a lot of reading lately on gluten intolerance/celiac, and I can tell you with reasonable certainty that the answer is not out there yet. Celiac disease is reasonably well understood, but there are very clearly people who do not have celiac by any measure and yet cannot eat gluten. There are other people with gluten-sensitive autoimmunity...
  21. I was exhausted from thyroid problems last month, so I have to ask everyone who is tired if they've had their thyroid checked. Seriously, thyroid problems are really common in celiacs.
  22. I'm doing exactly the same thing. The odd thing is that on the "Edit Signture" page, I have this at the bottom. Signature Restrictions Your signature may contain: * Up to 1 images * Images up to 100 x 100 pixels * Up to 0 URLs * Up to 10 lines It definitely doesn't want me putting in links.
  23. The best test for food reactions is removing them from your diet. There are no reliable diagnostic tests an allergist could do, only tests that help guide what to try eliminating. If you want professional help, a dietitian might be your best bet. Sensitivity to dairy is VERY common in gluten intolerant folks. Some are lactose intolerant, others react...
  24. Hi, there. Stop eating gluten and stop worrying about pieces of paper and diagnoses. There is not enough known about celiac disease and the genes to make ANY conclusions. For starters, HLA-DQ is definitely not the whole story. There are people of every HLA-DQ type that get sick from gluten. Most but not all celiacs are DQ2 or DQ8. There is...

    ARCHIVED Winging It

Remember that while Dr. Green wrote a great book, he was trying to write something very general. His recommendations may not work for every single person. Getting a formal diagnosis is nice, but 20% or more celiacs don't have positive celiac tests and they still fell a heck of a lot better off gluten. I was never formally diagnosed because I didn't want...
