ARCHIVED Restuarant And Post-Glutening Advice
Skylark replied to Almendra's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ugh. Sorry you got glutened. I take Immodium if I need it. If it's just nausea/pain I take Pepto. I find that switching to bland foods like gluten-free broth and white rice for a day or two really helps with the GI stuff. -
ARCHIVED Turning Over A New Spatula
Skylark replied to conniebky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I mostly cook my own food from scratch. I got sick of playing roulette eating out too. Like you say, you can do a lot with a chicken! I bring frozen homemade foods/leftovers to work most of the time. I have a rice cooker and I usually make 2 cups of rice so I have extra for the next couple days. If you can afford one, a good rice cooker is awfully... -
(((hug))) It sounds terrible. I don't know what to say. I hope you get better soon and it doesn't take another year.

ARCHIVED Started Dating - Dreading "the Talk"
Skylark replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You think there's a woman alive who hasn't tried some diet or another? You're on familiar territory for us females. Finding out a date has a dietary issues is nothing compared to finding out he has a wife (or girlfriend), children, is alcoholic, is a rabid born-again Christian, has a criminal record, or has herpes. Wow. I'm just remembering why I stopped... -
ARCHIVED Rage, Anger, Depression...i Am Celiac
Skylark replied to kaki-clam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't want to "push" the EMPowerPlus I take on these boards, but since you mention bipolar and still seem to be suffering some from psych troubles, I will post about it. I didn't get mentally well when I went gluten-free. Like you, I was a diagnosed bipolar with a cabinet full of meds. One of my symptoms from the undiagnosed celiac was depression and... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Reviews On Signet Diagnostic Corporation's Mrt Test.

Well, LEAP made the "dubious" list at Quackwatch. Open Original Shared Link Another abstract with a similar conclusion. The author notes that information on mediator release testing is only found on consumer sites. Open Original Shared Link There are a lot of scams right now with diagnostic tests, to the point that FDA is looking hard at companies... -
ARCHIVED Help! Biopsy Possible Refractory
Skylark replied to Kathleen Smith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, I hope you get it sorted out. It sounds like you have access to a great clinic and medical care. Refractory celiac, as you might have guessed, is celiac that doesn't respond to a gluten-free diet. The biopsy your doctor sent out for stains on will show them more about what is going on in your intestine and how they can treat you. I think the usual... -
ARCHIVED When Teachers Don't Understand Celiac Kids
Skylark replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was wheat-free and dairy-free as a child from "food allergies" starting before age 3. My heart goes out to your daughter because I walked in her shoes. I can't tell you how many times Mom negotiated with teachers. She simply wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Parents used to have a lot of pull in the school systems; Mom used that to my advantage. ... -
ARCHIVED Annoying Mouth Problems
Skylark replied to Kim27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I got them most often on the inside of my lower lip, or the inside of my cheeks where my teeth can catch. They went away after I was gluten-free for a while. It's so weird to bite the inside of my mouth and have it heal normally! If I eat gluten I'll often get one again. -
ARCHIVED Newbie Anorexic With Neural Symptoms
Skylark replied to twinkle-toez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, you are having a VERY common reaction to gluten. I get the nausea and GI disturbances. I also get very tired and usually anxious. It feels like a "stomach flu" or "food poisoning" when I get glutened and sometimes I have to switch to rice and broth because my stomach just won't settle back down. There are people on the board who do get fevers; I... -
So where do you go for accurate information? The National Enquirer? The lit is not wrong much of the time. It does tend to be over-interpreted and/or mis-interpreted by non-scientists. Small or poorly designed studies can get an awful lot of press. The bigger problem is that areas of inquiry are too limited by funding issues that arise from the realities...

ARCHIVED Feeling Sick After Eating Anything.
Skylark replied to RideAllWays's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mom has fructose malabsorption. She eats a lot of potatoes and white rice for starch. Also homemade cornbread or spoonbread with no added sugar. Brown rice has enough fructans to bother her. She eats a lot of leafy greens like kale and chard, and salads with limited amounts of other veggies with a little more fructose. Meats, nuts, eggs, and seeds... -
Do you have a reference for that one? Kind of curious as I haven't seen anything like that in the literature I've been reading.

ARCHIVED A Weeked Long Family Vacation
Skylark replied to missceliac2010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I do the same thing, answering briefly about how great I feel when I eat carefully and changing the subject. Lately the BP oil spill has been a good one. Here's another thing. Sometimes when people ask a lot of questions about your symptoms, they're wondering about their own health. I've had some really odd conversations where a friend will suddenly... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Anorexic With Neural Symptoms
Skylark replied to twinkle-toez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I bet half the people on this board have been called crazy at some point or another. A lot of us have skeptical relatives and family members. When they see the recovery, especially the positive personality changes that result from disappearing mood problems and anxiety, they often become very supportive. I do NOT have the piece of paper, as I went gluten... -
ARCHIVED Negative Blood Test, Positive Symptoms
Skylark replied to lianhua's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've had two different really good doctors tell me that symptom improvement alone is enough for a diagnosis. They say it's hard to find antibodies and hard to get a positive biopsy even if a person really seems to have a lot of celiac symptoms. Both these doctors told me that a bloodwork/biopsy diagnosis doesn't matter if the person is willing to eat gluten... -
ARCHIVED The Good, The Bad And The Sister.
Skylark replied to conniebky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sorry you're feeling sick. I get those stupid canker sores if I eat gluten too. Campbells doesn't claim their soups are gluten free and their broths used to list wheat protein. You probably got CC'd from all the noodle soups on their lines. You can get a list of their gluten-free stuff here. Open Original Shared Link Progresso has some really nice... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Anorexic With Neural Symptoms
Skylark replied to twinkle-toez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's hard to say with neuropathy. Celiac can definitely appear as a mix of GI and neuro symptoms, but it could also be malnutrition from your anorexia. B vitamin deficiencies can cause a lot of neurological problems. There are definitely celiacs with eating disorders, and many with depression and anxiety. Neuropathies do come and go. I've had sporadic... -
ARCHIVED Am I Really Putting Myself At Risk By Eating Out?
Skylark replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know exactly how you feel, only I do get pretty obnoxious symptoms from the gluten. I don't want to live "in a bubble" but I hate getting run down and sick when I get CC'd. If you're really worried, maybe you can see whether your stool antibodies have gone away. Doesn't Enterolab say you can repeat the test to check your diet? -
It does fit if you're thirsty and peeing a lot. Doesn't sound like any fun, but at least diabetes is easy to diagnose once you're at the doctor. You could go to the American Diabetes Association website and see whether you can learn a little more about it. They have a ton of info there. Open Original Shared Link

Apple and plum have fructose. Maybe you have fructose malabsorption. Try looking up a low FODMAP diet. -
ARCHIVED There's Nothing Left To Eat Without Feeling Sick
Skylark replied to sweeeeet's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The classic elimination diet goes all the way down to just three or four foods, to avoid exactly what you're talking about. Most common is lamb, rice, and pears. I ate leaf lettuce too when I did mine. You eat only those three foods for two weeks and see if things settle down. You could include the bananas if you're sure they agree with you but definitely... -
I was thinking the same thing. Didn't you about lose your mind last time you ate gluten, Connie? It sounded absolutely awful. I understand not wanting to go onto a difficult diet, but doesn't the dizziness and panic happen when you eat gluten? Here's another article for you to look at with the neuro problems and celiac. ARCHIVED Biopsy After 3 Months Gluten Free?
Skylark replied to Sarah1122's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi there and welcome. All bets are off if you're gluten-free for that long before your biopsy. Eating gluten for two weeks after three months gluten-free is not likely to make a difference. I also completely agree about not poisoning yourself if your gluten symptoms are really bad. With two first-degree relatives who are celiac and positive bloodwork... -
I get anxious too when I'm glutened. Also a lot of celiacs are vitamin B12 deficient, which causes depression and anxiety.
