  1. Then either you are very lactose intolerant or it's casein. I don't really know a way to tell them apart. Maybe someone else can explain how. All I know is that I was like that at first (not able to tolerate even yogurt or lactose-free milk) but after 5 or 6 months completely dairy free I was able to add yogurt and low-lactose cheese back in to my diet...
  2. This sounds like lactose intolerance to me. Cheese does not have as much lactose in it as milk or ice cream so that's why you don't have as bad of a reaction to cheese. Hard cheeses (like cheddar) are lower in lactose. You may also be able to tolerate yogurt because the enzymes break down the lactose making it easier to digest. As to you original...
  3. If it's a formal wedding and you want a gluten free meal you will have to request it in advance. That means getting the bride involved or finding out who her caterer is and calling them to ask about gluten free options yourself. I highly doubt you will be able to just ask for a "plain meal" at the reception and get safe food. I used to serve for a caterer...
  4. If you are required to have a meal plan, I suggest to talk to the head of the cafeteria. Perhaps they can provide more options for you such as having a plain grilled chicken breast on the days when the main student body is being served fried chicken or they can prepare some steamed veggies without sauce/seasonings for you. In addition to doing that I think...
  5. yep, I agree with what everyone else has said. Just to add to it, once you are diagnosed, doctors often retest as a measure of how well you are avoiding gluten. If it come back negative after you have been eating gluten free that means you are doing a good job avoiding it. Also, just the fact that you said you felt sick from ingesting some gluten on accident...
  6. Target has some lunch bags that look like casual purses. I also saw these recently at BJ's Warehouse: Open Original Shared Link They look just like a purse but they are insulated for carrying lunch or cold drinks. Also if you are staying at a hotel you might be able to keep some cold food in the hotel fridge if there is not one in the room.
  7. I don't know. I am allergic to pork, but I have the same phenomenon you are describing happen to me with beef. I'm a former vegetarian and now I have to eat beef (or bison) at least once a week or I feel run down. It doesn't seem to matter that I try to incorporate other sources of iron into my diet (Spinach, iron supplements, etc.). I still need to eat...
  8. My hands shake when I get gluten accidentally. It was one of my symptoms for a long time prior to going gluten free. I saw a couple of neurologists and had a whole battery of tests and they never turned up the cause. It went away only after I went gluten free. So I do believe it is from the gluten. If you just started the gluten free diet give it a few...
  9. The ads don't bother me--I learn about some new gluten free products/services that way. However may I suggest to the owners of this board that your could offer a paid subscription for people that don't want to see the ads? Another board I am on does that--it's a free site, but they also offer an ad-free subscription for $15-20 per year or something really...
  10. I have not tried it yet, but this recipe uses brown rice flour: Open Original Shared Link You could try your recipe with rice flour.
  11. Some of us don't do well with processed foods because we have multiple other intolerances/allergies to avoid as well, but if all you have to avoid is gluten you have a wide variety or convenience foods you can get. You can get a list of General Mills Gluten free products here: Open Original Shared Link The list includes things like Progresso soup and Hamburger...
  12. I'm so sorry! I've been there (3 times) and there's nothing that can make it better. You're doing the best thing you can by resting and pampering yourself. When you get to feeling a little bit better you might consider checking out the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" for a source of birth control.
  13. I would cut out the Quinoa and Wild rice since they are made on shared equipment. Also have you had Quinoa from other manufacturers and been okay with it? I had a terrible reaction quinoa pasta that was certified gluten free and made in a gluten free facility. When I asked here, several others said they react to quinoa.
  14. Oh, no to clarify I did not have D while taking antibiotics of even after I was done with them. I took Antibiotics for almost a year prior to my even trying a gluten free diet. I can't remember what they were now but they were really strong ones (including a few round of intravenous in the hospital) because I had MRSA and the doctor also suspected Lymes...
  15. I was completely dairy free for about 5 or 6 months and then I found I could tolerate small amounts. I'm about 8 months gluten free now and can tolerate low lactose cheese (hard cheeses like cheddar have little to no lactose) and yogurt (the lactose in yogurt gets broken down by the live yogurt cultures so it's easier to digest). I still cannot drink milk...
  16. I didn't read your link, but if it says that probiotics could help prevent celiac it's way off base IMO. There are genetic markers for people with celiac, it's not just something caused by bacteria or the environment (although I believe that stress or illness could trigger symptoms to begin at anytime in a person's life). Another thing to consider is that...
  17. Congrats! Now you have an interesting story to tell the baby when he or she grows up..."When I was pregnant with you I thought you were a gluten reaction..."
  18. Are you taking the vitamins in the morning? Try switching to taking them at night and see if it helps. Also make sure none of the vitamins are interacting with each other or other meds you could be taking. If you go to drugs.com they have an interaction checker and you can plug in vitamins as well as drugs to see if any interact and cause bad side effects...
  19. Oh, yes don't some anitbiotics make birth control pills not work or something like that? Could the very light one be implantation spotting? I have heard it's possible to have a light "period" the first month and still be pregnant, but I don't know. Well I hope whatever it is you find out soon.
  20. Yeah, I didn't really know much about celiac so I never had testing done and none of my doctors ever suggested it. I did an elimination diet out of desperation and figured out that gluten grains bothered me as well as soy and dairy. Then I started looking into celiac and I have almost all the neurological symptoms people post about here when glutened. ...
  21. I vote for pregnant or time of month coming on. This may be TMI, but I have noticed a change in my cycle since going gluten free and sometimes the week before my monthly I have some mild stomach upset or nausea. I keep thinking I'm pregnant, but after a few months of this I have noticed the pattern enough to recognize the signs. It doesn't seem to matter...
  22. I don't know about the ones at the game, but most of the frozen ones I have seen at the store have wheat flour in the "corn bread" part.
  23. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant some medical professionals are when it comes to food allergies and intolerances. I met a doctor at a party several months ago. I didn't know she was a doctor when I met her. I was looking at the packaging for the hummus the hostess had put out and was dismayed to see that it contained soy. The doctor questioned...
  24. I don't know the answer but I wanted to make a suggestion. Have you ever seen those electric cigarettes? They are a little plastic cigarette that looks just like a cigarette and releases a little vapor too. It's for people that are trying to quit smoking and it does release a little nicotine into your system, but it would look realistic and be better for...
  25. Did you check the mustard? Most mustards are okay, but some have gluten. As far as the tuna goes I cannot eat most packaged tuna because even the ones packed in water have soy in them. I have to buy the premium stuff to find one that does not have soy in it. If you are sure the tuna got you you might consider whether you have an intolerance to soy as...
