  1. The product I reacted to was lotion from Bath and Body Works. You're brave for wanting to test it out, I would not want to do that on purpose. If you really want to, though you could go in the store, read the ingredients on the tester samples and test a small amount with wheat germ oil on your arm or some place you won't accidentally lick. Lots of celiacs...
  2. Your dry mouth and eyes made me think of Sjogren's syndrome. Have you looked into it?
  3. Good to know, thanks. I haven't tried the gluten-free pasta at Olive Garden, I just know they have it. I have had their mixed grill (chicken medallion with veggies and steamed broccoli) and it was okay but very bland. I really love their salad. I just wish they had a gluten-free soup, I would go for just soup and salad.
  4. Do you have skin reactions to gluten in your own lotions? I am very sensitive and I think I may also be allergic to wheat because I broke out in hives when I put on lotion with wheat germ oil in it. HOWEVER, if you do not have a skin reaction (i.e. an allergy), then gluten in lotions can only hurt you if accidentally touch your mouth or eyes or you have...
  5. It's not chicken parm and Fettuccine Alfredo, but Olive Garden has a gluten free menu with gluten free pasta on it.
  6. It's likely just a statement to cover the company's behind. I would rather see a "made in same facility" statement than a "made on the same equipment" or "may contain wheat" statement. Look at it this way, if your household is not 100% gluten (i.e. if you live with gluten eaters) then your kitchen is a shared facility.
  7. Nuts alone are gluten free, however many are processed on the same equipment or in the same facility as wheat. Read the ingredients list and look over the labels carefully. Many I have seen say "may contain wheat". My personal rule is if it says "processed in the same facility as wheat" I may risk it, but I avoid "processed on the same equipment as wheat...
  8. Have you tried asking them to carry more items? I have had good luck getting my stores to start carrying certain gluten free foods by requesting it. If they are able to get the Udi's white bread then they should be able to get other Udi's items as well.
  9. Thank you for the update!
  10. Thanks! Will try it with just the pumpkin in place of the butter then! Awesome, I love fall foods.
  11. For things like thickening a sauce or soup or in a casserole or coating food to fry, yes I've had success. For baked goods (especially bread) I don't recommend it. Gluten free baking is very different from gluten baking. It's best to stick with some tried and true recipes until you figure out things like what the consistency of the "dough" should be. ...
  12. I use Pepto Bismol. Stay away from Maalox--I found out the hard way it has gluten in it.
  13. Yep, Tapioca is in many Gluten free goodies and it's naturally gluten free.
  14. Could you be dehydrated? Have you tried drinking Gatorade? Drinking just soda will make you more dehydrated, although I do like some ginger ale when my stomach hurts. You could also try some soothing herbal tea or fruit juices.
  15. I went through a denial stage at first, but all it took is one time intentionally eating pizza and I was "cured" of thinking it was all in my head. There's no way for me to "fake" the severe symptoms that occurred when I ate that pizza. I hope you get over the glutening and feel better soon.
  16. There's really not much I miss, but the one thing I have yet to find a gluten free replacement for is Triscuits.
  17. There's a Weight Watcher's recipe for pumpkin muffins that is nothing more than a box a cake mix and can of pumpkin puree. I was wondering if anyone has tried making this using the Betty Crocker Cake mixes? I have some pumpkin puree I need to use up and I was thinking of trying it, but can anyone think of a reason why it wouldn't work? Should I add an...
  18. I asked a question similar to this a few months ago...the general consensus on the board was that the best we can do is suggest testing and educate our family members that are willing to listen, but we can't push. Pushing them to get her tested if they dismiss your suggestion could cause a rift in your relationship. And small children can be false negative...
  19. I don't know much about China, but if you won't have access to a kitchen for full cooking you could buy a rice cooker when you get there. Buy a big bag of rice and subsist on rice and vegetables for a month. It would probably get boring but you could do it as long as you are not traveling to remote villages. Also many of the rice noodles I get at the Asian...
  20. No advice for you but I can commiserate, especial about the soy. I indulged last week on some Lays Stax and some chocolate and now I have the worst sinus infection. I seem to get a sinus infection every other month when I break down and have something with soy. Soy is harder to avoid than gluten it seems unless you make everything from scratch and always...
  21. I can understand not trusting doctors. I had so many unexplained symptoms from gluten and so many useless tests I was desperate and did an elimination diet before I even suspected celiac. I can't go back to eating gluten now to get a test and I wish I had known to get tested. That said if you are finding the gluten free diet helpful then no need to poison...
  22. Why hasn't the doctor tested you or your family? You should get all the testing done BEFORE going gluten free. If you go gluten free (or even gluten lite) first it will make future tests inaccurate. And if going gluten free eliminates your symptoms you may not be able to add it back into you diet safely for accurate tests. After testing, then you should...
  23. You probably already know this but you can do gluten free on a budget. Just don't buy any gluten free replacements or specialty foods. Get naturally gluten free stuff like rice, potatoes, corn, beans, etc. These foods are cheap (especially if you buy in bulk) and easy to make. I hope things get better for you soon.
  24. I'm not sure if Ken is able to get online, but I wanted to let you know that we do not have HEB stores in Virginia (Ken indicated he is in Virginia and I am too). So as kind as your offer is, it would not help him. Does your HEB store allow you to buy gift cards with a gift card? Some of my stores do that and they carry gift cards for other stores or restaurants...
  25. Yikes, "last meal" makes it sound like celiac is a death sentence. You can get gluten free pizza and bread for sandwiches. I tried the King Arthur Gluten Free pizza crust recipe this weekend and it tasted almost like a Pizza Hut pizza to me. I couldn't tell it was gluten free. For bread look for Udi's or Katz. I haven't tried makign my own bread yet...
