ARCHIVED Need To Keep My Rice/potato/xanthan, Etc., In Fridge?
GlutenFreeManna replied to TrickyMama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't know the answer, but I just wanted to say I hope you labeled all those ziplocs. It's hard to tell all those white powders apart once you put them away. -
ARCHIVED Do Any Of You Wear A Med Bracelet?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Aphreal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have one, but I have been debating on getting one since I saw it mentioned here. The way I see it, it's not vital unless you have a drug allergy (like penicillin) or unless you are single and frequently travel alone or something. If you are unconscious they won't give you food right away, maybe later via feeding tube in the hospital, but not right... -
I understand! I have these thoughts sometimes when I go to parties or pretty much any place with lots of food. Or if I watch tv, fortunately I don't watch too much tv--it seems like every food commercial is promoting either "whole grains", high fiber food or pizza. I just console myself by going home and getting a treat I CAN eat like gluten free, soy free...

ARCHIVED Tortilla Chips
GlutenFreeManna replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Snyders of Hanover or Eatsmart Naturals Tortilla chips. Also Grande chips are good, just make sure you get the ones that say gluten free (they make one with a seasoning that has gluten and a multigrain chip with wheat in it). I also like to make my own chips in the oven with Mission corn tortillas. Just pre-heat oven to 350, spray the tortillas... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Being "over Diagnosed" According To My Gyn
GlutenFreeManna replied to SaraKat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If anything I think it is under-diagnosed. Maybe she has just seen a lot of women with it in her office recently? It's a good thing to have your positive blood tests or else it sounds like she would have talked you out of believing you have it. Also she's not completely accurate about Celiac not affecting pregnancy. Yes, it's probably true that if you... -
ARCHIVED Distilled Vinegar Question
GlutenFreeManna replied to Mizzo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think her info is outdated. But I also think that some celiacs cannot tolerate distilled vinegars for a different reason. Hopefully someone else can chime in and answer this. I'm curious too. I use vinegar for a lot of my cooking, dressings and marinades since I can't have soy. -
ARCHIVED Question On Soy Sauce Vs. Soy Beans
GlutenFreeManna replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the reminder. I had checked before about a month ago and they didn't have it in my area. Now two stores carry it and I can order it online. Yay! -
ARCHIVED Snyder's gluten-free Pretzels
GlutenFreeManna replied to digmom1014's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks! I'll have to ask if they can order it or else I'll order some online for myself. I have seen Wylde mentioned before but didn't think to look into whether they are soy free. -
ARCHIVED Question On Soy Sauce Vs. Soy Beans
GlutenFreeManna replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Most regular soy sauce has wheat in it. There are wheat-free brands though (I can't tell you which brands because I have to avoid all form of soy in addition to gluten). If your daughter doesn't need to be soy free then you can just get wheat-free soy sauce or wheat free tamari. In the U.S., the label has to specify if the soy sauce has wheat. So that... -
ARCHIVED Snyder's gluten-free Pretzels
GlutenFreeManna replied to digmom1014's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well no wonder I haven't seen them yet. No whole foods here (nor Wegman's). Raven since you have bought them can you tell me if they have soy in them? The only pretzel I have found in my area are Glutino and they are made with soy flour. Trying not to get my hopes up while searching. -
ARCHIVED How Long Do You Give It Before You Cut Something Else Out?
GlutenFreeManna replied to danaf617's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If your house is not gluten-free, it's going to be hard to avoid cross contamination. Soy is a common one, but everybody is different--some react to corn, rice, tapioca etc. Have you tried keeping a food journal to see if there are certain things that you react to? A journal can be helpful because you may have reactions delayed by a day or two. So it... -
ARCHIVED This Is All So Totally New To Me..
GlutenFreeManna replied to tater218's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
IMO, the best way to feel better faster is to be super strict with your diet to start. There are many mainstream processed foods (like potato chips) that don't have gluten ingredients added, but may be processed on the same lines as gluten containing products. Some people don't have any problems with these products and some people are really sensitive and... -
ARCHIVED I Just Broke Out In Hives
GlutenFreeManna replied to Aphreal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Check your lotions and other products even if you have not started using something new. I had hives about a month after going gluten free. They turned out to be from some lotion that had wheat germ oil in it. I had been using this lotion for years with no problems, but all of a sudden it was like my body got super sensitive to even topical wheat after... -
ARCHIVED A Public Apology To Coffee
GlutenFreeManna replied to Chakra2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Too funny! I hope coffee forgives you and you don't start reacting to it as well! -
ARCHIVED What's The Science Behind Celiac Soy Intolerance?
GlutenFreeManna replied to Chakra2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have any science (sorry) but I read on some natural medicine sites that there was a connection between soy and thyroid disease. Hypothyroidism runs in my family so I cut out soy when I first did my elimination diet. When I tried to add it back in I had fatigue, joint swelling, muscle pain and extreme moodiness. So even though my thyroid tests are... -
ARCHIVED Are These Symptoms?
GlutenFreeManna replied to anbeard's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
BTW, if you think the rash is DH, you can go to a dermatologist and have them biopsy the skin next to the rash. If it comes back positive for DH then you have celiac. -
ARCHIVED Are These Symptoms?
GlutenFreeManna replied to anbeard's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, you can have celiac or gluten intolerance even if you are overweight. Have the doctor check your thyroid levels even if you don't have symptoms of thyroid disease yet. The weight gain alone could be a symptom and many people that have celiac also have hypothyroidism. You may have to push harder to get a test if your doctor is not really familiar with... -
ARCHIVED Tortilla Wrap And Pita Bread
GlutenFreeManna replied to kannne's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
No recipe, but I buy Masa and make corn tortillas by hand (following direction on bag). They end up being thicker than a store bought tortilla because I don't have a tortilla press, but I like them like that. They remind me of pita bread and I have used them with gyro meat for a Greek meal. Just make sure the Masa you buy is gluten free. I hand some trouble... -
Raven what type of allergy testing did you have done? If I were to go get an allergy test for foods what would I ask for? I used to have seasonal allergies but they were not really diagnosed. I just always sneezed and had nasal drip and itchy eyes during the high pollen season. Since going gluten free my seasonal allergies were much less this year. I...

This is interesting. I am also allergic to shellfish but I'm not sure I should try it. Perhaps I should get an allergy test done? It was diagnosed when I was a teenager so it's been a long time since I tried any. I am still sensitive to soy and most dairy (can do low-lactose cheese and yogurt now). And my gluten reactions are worse than before going...

I've been gluten free for almost 8 months now. I have had an allergy to pork for a few years. My throat used to close up when I ate it. Well this weekend I accidentally ate pepperoni (long story, but I thought it was turkey pepperoni until I tasted it) and I had NO reaction. I did freak out and got myself some benedryl about twenty minute later just to...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Bisquick (You're Gonna Laugh At This)
GlutenFreeManna replied to scarlett77's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made this: Open Original Shared Link And it was very, very good. So good I ate it for brunch and then had some again for a snack later in the day and finished it off for dinner. My husband did have a few pieces as well, but I ate most of it. It re-heated okay, but was best hot out of the oven....Oh and I left out the cheese and it was STILL GOOD... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free Is All The Rage Now"
GlutenFreeManna replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I wouldn't have any problem with a friend making this comment to me as long as they understood that this wasn't just a fad diet for ME. We have to admit that, yes, it is a fad diet for some, but also use that as an opportunity to explain that for many others it is a medical requirement. It's the people that are diagnosed and yet still cheat that... -
ARCHIVED How To Convince The Boyfriend To Make Our Kitchen Gluten-Free?
GlutenFreeManna replied to dreacakes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you even brought the subject up yet? You may be surprised, he may be willing to do it if it will make you healthier more often. Most of the things he loves could have gluten-free substitutes and if not he can still eat his favorites when you go out to restaurants or while he is at work. You're not asking for him to go gluten free completely, you are...
