Latest Celiac Disease News & Research:
Everything posted by love2travel

Awesome news! I just returned from Croatia/Italy and had no problems, either. Italy is particularly knowledgable about celiac disease. I've read time and time again that it is in the top 3 places in the world for being informed. In fact, it is mandatory that by the age of 5 everyone gets tested for celiac disease. It was so lovely feeling "safe" and...

I finally got around to checking and yes, we can get some in Canada! I just checked the website and am astonished at all the yummy-looking flavours available. Key lime pie? Chocolate chip cookie dough? Where have I been?

ARCHIVED Gave In And Called Dr For Results..................
love2travel replied to 2johndeereboys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So true. I definitely needed a diagnosis - not just to believe I have Celiac but it turns out that my fibromyalgia was diagnosed as a result. Not that there is a lot I can do for that, anyway, but it sure answers a lot of questions I had. Many pieces of the puzzle are now fitting together. It also made my family members' decision easier to get tested... -
It depends on how dire the situation was and where the island was located. What natural foods fruits, veg, herbs, roots, nuts would be available? Is there fresh water? Are there cannibals on this island? What types of venomous creatures are located there and how big are they? All that aside, I would like to think I would not resort to gluten but...

ARCHIVED Back From Our Fantastic Vacation In Croatia And Italy!
love2travel replied to love2travel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It IS amazing - to us, anyway! It would only suit those who love seclusion in solid forest and vineyards with unending birdsong and old stone houses with shutters, exposed stone interior, original exposed beams and gigantic indoor and outdoor fireplaces. It's small, not luxurious or pretentious at all, but just as we like it! Packed with character and... -
ARCHIVED Gave In And Called Dr For Results..................
love2travel replied to 2johndeereboys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, IrishHeart!! I agree. When my doctor told me he suspected I had celiac I was stunned because I did not get sick or exhibit GI symptoms and so on. However, I now see how all my miscarriages were related. So, I had my scope/biopsies done to prove I didn't have it but sure enough - my results were overwhelmingly positive. The shock has long... -
ARCHIVED Back From Our Fantastic Vacation In Croatia And Italy!
love2travel replied to love2travel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is miraculous that I was able to walk the day after the trip. I'm so pleased because I did something incredibly scary and feel it was such an accomplishment. I wrote notes in my journal so I would remember this for the next trip and avoid all that icky fear. There just are no words to describe the sublime beauty of Croatia. I would fail miserably... -

ARCHIVED How Often Do You Cheat?
love2travel replied to steve-010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Although I do not experience GI issues with gluten, I WOULD NEVER CHEAT! To me it is all or nothing. I think long term. My husband and family need me. -
It's been nearly a month since I last posted. My husband and I have been on a glorious vacation to our lovely house in Croatia for three weeks. I had SO much fear and trepidation prior to the trip that I had to request Ativan for short-term anxiety. The reason for that fear was knowing the agonizing back/hip/rotator cuff/herniated disc/fibro pain I would...

ARCHIVED Just Made The Decision To Cancel Family Vacation!
love2travel replied to 2johndeereboys's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Not knowing really is difficult, isn't it? It is hard to move forward until you know something either way. I really hope you hear something Friday so you at least know how to proceed. Believe me - I thought of cancelling our trip many, many times but just did it, although I know it would hurt incredibly. It was a huge chance but I took it and man... -
ARCHIVED Just Made The Decision To Cancel Family Vacation!
love2travel replied to 2johndeereboys's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Having just returned from a three-week vacation in Europe I would say don't cancel your vacation! It really is easier than you think. When you worry about something that COULD happen and avoid it it is called fear avoidance - I had that for ages with my horrific chronic back pain and fibromyalgia. I would always ask, "What if...". Usually those what ifs... -

ARCHIVED Help My Poor Flower Beds!
love2travel replied to Darn210's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
As a Master Gardener I garden organically BUT in your situation one thing you can do is dip a sponge into Roundup and dab it on the thistle, carefully avoiding surrounding lawn or whatever. But as you know, that can take even longer than gluten-free shopping! Man, I detest those things! If even a teeny bit of the root is nicked more roots appear. ... -
ARCHIVED Canada And Income Tax
love2travel replied to anna34's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My husband is a chartered accountant and so knows a lot about this (and his wife has Celiac Disease!) - don't forget to get a letter from your doctor with your Celiac diagnosis in case it is requested by Revenue Canada. If you register with the Celiac Association you may get discounts at a few stores (I've heard of a couple in Alberta that offer 10% off with... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Restaurants In Saskatchewan
love2travel replied to num1habsfan's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Thanks for this! I live in Alberta but used to live in Saskatoon and still visit regularly. To the Saskatoon list I will add: - Truffles Bistro (they are well trained in gluten-free stuff) - plus it is one of the top restauraunts in the city which means yummy food! The chef is superb (a chef de cuisine - one of the top in Canada) and the menu is extremely... -

We had some lovely local plump gluten-free pork Cumberland sausages with garlic and buttermilk mashed potatoes and brown butter herb roasted carrots. Bangers and Mash it is called. Oh, and caramelized onion red wine sauce as is traditionally served with it. gluten-free brownies for dessert. -
ARCHIVED Liquid Diet Before Colonscopy
love2travel replied to cahill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It truly wasn't bad at all. Sure, it was a pain drinking a gallon of stuff, but it was liquidy like water, not thick or weirdly textured. It gives you frequent diarrhea but it was nowhere near as yucky as I thought it would be. The worst part for me was not being able to drink anything for nearly 18 hours - my scopes were scheduled late the next day and... -
ARCHIVED Liquid Diet Before Colonscopy
love2travel replied to cahill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just a tip - prior to my colonoscopy I was told not to drink anything red or orange as it could be misconstrued as blood. I just drank lots and lots of water. -
ARCHIVED Cookies
love2travel replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have not found any cookies/baked treats that I find palatable so make my own - usually shortbread, chocolate chip, brownies or butterscotch brownies, meringues, banana bread...but then I love baking. -
ARCHIVED I Might Be An Idiot, But I Am Desperate...
love2travel replied to Dee777's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I get D (it is rare) I consume more fibre and that ALWAYS works. Women are to have 25 g of fibre per day; men 30 g. Apparently we only get about 10 g per day on average! Some days I struggle to get enough fibre in my diet.
