ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice
love2travel replied to Korwyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Whew! Was wondering if anyone was going to ask for a third! 3. Restaurant travel cards are hugely beneficial in countries where English is not the first language. What the heck... 4. Don't allow celiac disease to prevent you from going on vacation. Just plan ahead! -
ARCHIVED Products Question
love2travel replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My favourite herb salts to make are orange, lemon and lime with rosemary; lemon zest, pepper and oregano; sage and lemon. You likely do this but I love to make compound herb butters to freeze. I really like garlic, chive and lemon; chili lime; sage and lemon and so on. And to use some basil (aside from pesto) I make blueberry basil vineger and basil... -
ARCHIVED Cancer, Chemo, Gluten Ughhh
love2travel replied to fran641's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What a lovely doctor. Fran, sometimes it is difficult to even know what to say. Just know that you have given me encouragement without knowing it! It seems as though you are going through too much to humanly bear - I'm praying for you. Maybe it is a good evening to snuggle up with a lighthearted book. -
Me, too! It is quite common traditionally to make the batter for deep-fried calamari from white rice flour and/or cornstarch (called a tempura batter) and club soda but of course that is not always the case. So, I buy calamari and make my own including a few yummy dips (i.e. wasabi mayonnaise, honey mustard, etc.). I use it for green beans, squash blossoms...

ARCHIVED Did I Do The Right Thing?
love2travel replied to ElseB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It was a nice gesture but you definitely did the right thing, especially as you did it quickly to prevent any confusion in the future. Now when it happens again (by someone else) you will have had practice already! There is no way I would eat said bread without a detailed list of ingredients, either. -
ARCHIVED Meijer Brand Ricotta Cheese
love2travel replied to Coolclimates's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've seen that, too. FYI ricotta is incredibly simple to make and much cheaper (same with creme fraiche). Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Finally Made A Decison With Oldest Son

I'm in a bit of a fibro fog today (that is my excuse and I'm sticking to it!). Really, all the best. Hopefully you will get some answers quickly! -
ARCHIVED I Can Fall Asleep, But Can't Stay Asleep
love2travel replied to anna34's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've heard that melatonin works in many; not me, though. Not one bit of difference. But as our bodies are all so very different it makes sense that what works for one may not work for another. The only thing that works for me is prescriptions meds but am hopeful that will change in the future! But of course it is far preferable that someone who... -
ARCHIVED Tortilla Chips
love2travel replied to UpbeatPete's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I make my own tortilla shells, brush with oil and season how I like, and bake til crisp. This way I can make several kinds depending on the flavour profile I am going for. -

I must be having an off day to have missed that!! In that case, I really hope the sooner the better. Poor little guy! -
ARCHIVED I Can Fall Asleep, But Can't Stay Asleep
love2travel replied to anna34's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That is a difficult problem. I have had chronic insomnia for years and years so totally empathize with you. Many nights I get less than 3 hours' sleep; sometimes I literally do not fall asleep at all so feel quite useless the next day. However, mine is often pain related - it is nearly impossible to get into a good position as I cannot lie on my stomach... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
love2travel replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The Jambalaya is incredible - we are having it again tonight with homemade gluten-free focaccia bread and grilled asparagus. Untraditional accompaniments, I know! At the moment it is only +2 degrees. It froze last night, unfortunately, so am baking today to warm up the house (don't want to turn the furnace on in June). -

Oh, yes! I know what you mean. I did not realize that is what they are called. Learned something new today!! The lamb burger sounds incredible. Did you happen to have a gluten-free bun, too, or did you have it another way? Lamb....mmmmmmmmmm.... -
ARCHIVED Finally Made A Decison With Oldest Son
love2travel replied to Roda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So sorry to hear about your son's tummy troubles - it must be so hard for you as a parent to see him go through this. Unfortunately for accurate biopsy results it is recommended to eat the equivalent of 4 pieces of bread a day for 3 months. That can be a long time for many. Hang in there! -
It's GOT to be. I know there are lots of vistas in Scotland but I think I was right there! Where is this exactly in the highlands?

ARCHIVED If You Could Travel Anywhere In The World, Where Would It Be?
love2travel replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
From your list we have yet to go to Spain and Ireland. If I were to do a Top 10 (make that 11) it would be: 1. Israel 2. Egypt (not at the moment, though!) 3. Turkey 4. Ireland 5. Romania 6. Lithuania 7. Hungary 8. Bulgaria 9. Poland 10. Estonia 11. Slovakia We've been to many countries but have so many more... -

Oh, what a treat!! They sound wonderful. What are Lorne sausages?? Our sausage guy is from Cumberland originally - he makes wonderful gluten-free sausages. Our favourites are lamb with rosemary and Cumberland. His pork with sage is also yummy. He is considering doing pancetta! That would be awesome. This guy lives three hours away from here but... -
ARCHIVED Another Worry Wart Here!
love2travel replied to 2johndeereboys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IrishHeart said what I was just going to say. The thought of it was FAR worse than the real thing for me. After waking up after both procedures (which were easy peasy) I told my husband I could do it again the next day! The prep wasn't great but not nearly as bad as I expected. I'm not just saying it to be kind - it's true! Don't forget to request... -
ARCHIVED If You Could Travel Anywhere In The World, Where Would It Be?
love2travel posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm a travel fiend. Junkie, even. Exploring cultures, languages, history, architecture, art, geography, food and so on fascinates me to no end. So, if you were able to travel anywhere, where would you choose and why? Although not exactly celiac friendly (but that is not the point here), my current picks would be Israel and Jordan, followed by Egypt... -
ARCHIVED Products Question
love2travel replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Me, neither. I scratch cook/bake daily because I love it so darned much! As I also teach cooking/baking classes I stay on top of culinary trends. My pantry is huge and full of all kinds of cool ingredients from our travels. I, too, love ras el hanout et. al. My spice collection is exotic - I have almost 90. I try to purchase whole, dry roast them... -
Sorry - cannot take my eyes off the scenery long enough to even notice! It's the car you're talking about, right?

ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice
love2travel replied to Korwyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Intriguing topic idea! Hmmmmmmm... 1. As above, don't panic! I did just that. I recall standing in front of my pantry, crying, because I just did not know what to do. Suddenly gluten seemed to be in everything! So, what did I do? I went out on a binge, buying a whole host of gluten-free processed snacks because I felt sorry for myself. Very... -
ARCHIVED Traveling To Dordogne Region In France
love2travel replied to heatherm4's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I believe if there's a will there's a way! So cliche but true. I refuse to allow celiac disease prevent me from doing something I love. Although I have not been to France since diagnosed with celiac disease I just returned back to Canada from Croatia which isn't exactly known for its knowledge of the disease. On their celiac website I read that... -

ARCHIVED Products Question
love2travel replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Cool! What are the rules? Can this include intrinsically gluten-free stuff or is it pre-made gluten-free products? All the gluten-free products that come to mind are those that are already gluten-free like duck, truffles, shark, langoustines, lamb, vanilla beans, fresh herbs, lemons, pink peppercorns... But if it is pre-made gluten-free snack stuff...
