ARCHIVED Hit A Ceiling For Recovery, Maybe Even Taken A Step Back
Marilyn R replied to UpbeatPete's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My first symptoms were neurological too. I found that after going gluten-free, I had to go Soy, Dairy (not just lactose) and Corn Free too. I don't know if that's your case. If you're grilling meats with marinades that contain soy (and there are a list of soy derivatives that is almost as mind boggling as the gluten list), maybe soy is the problem. ... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free 6 Weeks
Marilyn R replied to SarahJimMarcy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The poke you in the back allergy testing helped me! I never would have guessed that I was allergic to turkey or pecans. Or clams! I'm thinking about getting re-poked becase I have a new insurance plan. It could be interesting to see the results compared to last year and it could be interesting to see if I can just have the testing without the before... -
ARCHIVED I Can Fall Asleep, But Can't Stay Asleep
Marilyn R replied to anna34's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you considered other food intolerances? Sometimes they mimic the same problems you had before going gluten free. Dairy, soy, corn and nightshades are the frequent offenders. Wishing you a good night's sleep, M -
ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice
Marilyn R replied to Korwyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Great responses, everyone. Here's my other advice. 3. Make food cooking and preparation a top priority. Your health depends on it. 4. Buy a pressue cooker or request one as a gift and learn how to use it (5 lb. stainless steel is the bomb!) 5. Clean out your silverware drawer and utensil drawer or container. Bleach or replace the dividers... -
What a horror for you. Lettuce, cucumbers, other greens and a really virile strain of E. Coli in Europe. I'd go for root vegetables. It seems like if you peeled the cucumber, the bacteria couldn't invade. We've had E-Coli tomato break outs down here, and I wondered if it was from people not washing the fruit, or if that bacteria could prosper in the...

I'm bumping this up because it's a good topic. Does anybody want to add their third piece of advice? -

ARCHIVED Attention Dog Lovers!
Marilyn R replied to Newtoitall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sometimes I just use plain water on my dear old dog. If I use something I purchased, I make sure I wash my hands well immediately after the bath. If you have a Cracker Barrel near you, they sell Kirk's Coconut Soap for a reasonable price. You can soak a bar of Kirk's in a gallon of water for a week or so, add oil, and make your own dog bath soap that lasts... -
ARCHIVED Nearing The End Of My 4Th Week
Marilyn R replied to UpbeatPete's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Soybeams and most soy derivitives make my body react very similarly to ingeesting gluten. (Attack!) I'm ok with other beans and bean flours, but others have problems with pea or bean proteins. I'd give up soy next if I were you, but I'm not an expert. Good luck! Hope you feel better. -
ARCHIVED Misc Questions About How To Do This
Marilyn R replied to cait's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If your experience is similar to mine, you may find that you don't need anti-deppresants at all anymore. In fact, the gluten in your anti-D could be causing depression. I'd ask your doctor about weaning off of the anti-D. If you want to stay vegetarian, it can be tough. My need for protein made me eat meats again. I definitely receommend purchasing... -
ARCHIVED Can A Long Term Undiagnosed Wheat Allergy Cause Severe Nausea And Vomiting?
Marilyn R replied to sandiego88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I forgot to say that I am not nauseas any more (thankfully, cheerfully), but if I get the slightest bit of gluten in something I eat, nausea rears it's ugly head again. So I rarely eat out, or eat something prepared by somebody else. -
ARCHIVED Can A Long Term Undiagnosed Wheat Allergy Cause Severe Nausea And Vomiting?
Marilyn R replied to sandiego88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes, in my case. I was nauseaus every single day, day in/day out. I woke up every morning heaving and my dear BF would bring me a half a piece of whole wheat toast after about an hour and tell me I had to eat something. I've kidded him that he had been poisoning me with good intentions. I only scored a "2" on skin prick testing with wheat, so I have... -
ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice

1. You may get some really wierd blood test results where a specialist advises you to go to another specialist based on your blood test results. And when you research why they want to send you, based on those blood test results, you will probably freak out. Save yourself from that. Just ask them to repeat that blood draw. Next time it turns out normal... -
I sympathize. And I've also wished for a "food pill". Can you eat meat? I'm presuming that since you went on a fruit diet you don't particularly care for it. I don't like meat, but my body needs it, so I usually marinate in citrus juice of some type (orange, lime, lemon,, seasonings (S&P, cumin, mustard, chili, etc.) and grill it. It's best...

ARCHIVED Products Question
Marilyn R replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For commercial products, Kettle Brand Sea Salt and Pepper Potato Chips. 2nd place would be Dark Chocolate Nuggets with Almonds by Hershey's. From nature, a perfectly ripened non-fibrous mango, sliced and eaten plain. (There are different varieties of mangoes, just like there are different varities of any fruit of veg.) Tonight I had a perfect mango... -

Are you suggesting a mortar and pestle because I can't be trusted with a stick blender? LOL I do have a m&p, a good yard sale find for $3. Hope to see your salad dressing recipes posted soon. So, last night we had barbequed skinless chicken thighs that had marinated all day in homemade memphis style BBQ sauce, roasted sweet potatoes amd... -

Grilled skinless chicken thighs that I marinated overnight in Memphis style (safe homemade and tangy/spicy) BBQ sauce, grilled sweet taters, salad. Fresh sweet cherries for dessert. Yum. -
ARCHIVED I've Been Duped
Marilyn R replied to JenHarris's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Personally, I'd forego other testing unless you have other medical issues that go unresolved. I am undiagnosed gluten intolerant person with a family history of celiac disease. I talked to an Internal Medicine doctor yesterday trained at the U of Miami. After I gave her a brief description of before/after gluten-free scenario, she told me "You have... -
ARCHIVED I'm In Guar Gum Hell
Marilyn R replied to annegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I checked out one of her cookbooks from the library. She uses almond flour (or did in this cookbook) almost exclusively, and didn't use substitute thickeners whatsover. All off the recipes looked absolutely yummy, but I seem to have lost my love for baking. There was an internet souce listed for flours and nuts. I've followed the... -
ARCHIVED Allergy Pills
Marilyn R replied to Pippi777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We're all different, and I can have something totally different going on with me than you have going on with you. I break out in hives all over my chest, back and arms if I take Clarinex. I'm ok with Zyrtec, but I cut them in half, and take half a dose every morning unless I don't have symptoms and skip it. I carry the Xyrtec with me in case I need... -
It might be worthwhile to have your Vitamin D-3 checked in a blood test. It helps me (and my shower drain) to supplement my D-3.

ARCHIVED Diagnosed 4 Months Ago. Still Lost.
Marilyn R replied to Niebr's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can eat very well at home for so much less that it costs to eat out, and your risks are significantly less. We had grilled marinated lamb shoulder chops tonight with rosemary (I grow it, super easy) olive oil, lemon juice, grainy mustard with salad from lettuce we grew and potato leek soup. I had enough left over soup to take to a neighbor (and... -

Happy anniversary! -
If you have had two cups over a day and haven't had a food reaction in 8-24 hours, I'd confident that you are good with goats mild. Lucky you! Now you can make your own yoghurt! Was it homogonized goats milk or straight from the goat?

Wow. Thanks for that advice Ravenwood. There's still something making me feel ill, now I wonder if it is my "safe" milk. I haven't seen the Good Karma brand here, but maybe my grocer will special order it. I think the coconut milk I made from scratch lasted three days. It took me all day to make it. (Started with roasting a whole coconut.)
