Waa! I wish we had a Trader Joes here. Thanks for the good post! What are you using for make-up? I've struggled with make-up for over a year now. I made a big purchase from one of the sponsors a year ago. The only thing I liked was the blush. But the brushes were nice. We have a local source of a nice facial cream that has royal jelly, aloe... -
That sounds delicious and perfect for a hot summer meal! Thanks for sharing.

ARCHIVED Sweet Basil Vs Spicy Globe Basil
Marilyn R replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I love basil! I'm dairy free but still make pesto in a mini food processer or M&P with olive oil and safe nuts. It's great as a marinade for anything you grill or as a condiment for meats and shellfish. I have both varieties too. Spicy globe basil is more peppery in flavor. It's nice in homemade broth and chicken soup. Enjoy! -

OOH, hate those "natural flavors". Can you call the mfg? -

I can be totally wrong about this. I don't have medical credentials. If you can eat eggs and feel good, continue eating eggs. If you eat eggs and feel bad, try to figure out if it is the white (more commonly the allergin) or the yolk. (In my case, it's the yolk.) I still occasionally enjoy gluten-free pancakes or homemode baked items without causing... -

I've read other posts that PF Chang's is a really good gluten-free option. Have you considered a soy intolerance? That's fairly common, and I believe PF Chang's has a separate gluten-free SF menu. If you haven't really felt better since going gluten-free, you could have some other food intolerances worth exploring. Dairy and soy are on top of the... -

Wow that is a brutal work schedule. Hat's off to you for doing it. I hope you enjoy the long weekend. -
All of the grocery stores in my hometown are having a sale on pork ribs. Maybe your local grocer has a good deal or ribs for the 4th too. Here's my favorite recipe for ribs, hope you like it. Pork Ribs Carolina BBQ Sauce 1 c white vinegar 1 c apple cider vinegar

Good point, Karen. And he can pick up gluten at all the fast food spots in town without having to contaminate the kitchen. Maybe you don't have to ban the man. Just ban the gluten. The first year is the toughest, it get's better. -

One thing I try to do is every two to four months I take a Saturday and I BBQ a lot of meat (rare). Top Round, pork blade steak, marinated flank steak, roasts, chicken thighs and drums. I put portion sizes in 1qt ziplock baggies, fill up a gallon ziplock bag with portion the 1qt ziplocks, and freeze them. Takes about 3-4 hours to do everything and clean up... -
Excellent points. I think that doctors can't prescribe a pill or cream for celiac disease, so they're out of their comfort zone. The only people reminding them about the disease is US. Studies and publications are few and far between compared to the rapid stream of information that doctors face every day. I try to make a point of asking my doctors...

I agree with gluten-free Mann's advice above. You're a nurse, you get it. You can educate people, and you've tried to educate him. He's either with you or against you in this battle. What has he shown so far? Only you know how far you're willing to stick that line out that he continualy stomps on. Free advice is worth what you pay for... -
ARCHIVED Do I Really Need A Heavy Duty Mixer?
Marilyn R replied to Harpgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It is a big decision to purchase a Kitchen Aid (somebody recommended a Cuisinart in an earlier post.) I have one and love it. I have a non gluten-free friend that says she rarely uses her's because it's such a PIA to haul it out of the cupboard. I splurged on the dutscover, and keep the KA on my counter. (That's big, because I have a teensy galley kitchen... -

That's a great idea! I'm thinking I need signs that say "Wash Your Hands Now or submit to vebal abuse from the gluten-free wench." "Her knives and tongue are sharp!" -
I used to have insomina. It went away when I went gluten-free. I notice right away when I've accidently injested gluten, because I get maybe an hour's worth of sleep. I'll just lay there and wish, and thoses of you who know, I fidget. I hate the fidgets.

How long have you been gluten-free? You really shouldn't be having D unless you're getting CC or have other food intolerances as Ravenwood suggested. You aren't eating in the hospital cafeteria, are you? If you're eating food from the salad bar, it may look like the safest thing to eat, but that food still isn't safe due to CC. And you really can't... -
It's worth a shot, especially if you have insurance. If the endo doesn't come up with anything, have you been to an allergist? That helped me, but not everyone belives in the science behind it. Good luck, I wish you well.

You're living with Dennis the Menace. You have to nag! (I know, because I live with one too.) My Dennis gets aggravated with me, but I have hounded him (not in my nature, I swear) and he gets huffy and I feel bad, but not nearly as bad as when I get zapped by gluten. We're at 14 months gluten-free now. He finally gets it. I still watch though... -

Thank you Mushroom. That same neurologist tried to convince me to have a nerve biopsy. Why? To diagnose me. (But not with celiac disease, and all of my neuro problems are linked to celiac disease.) I think I'll cancel my next appointment. I appreciate the heads up. Why pay the co-payment if she doesn't have a clue? -

Nope. The hottest I've had is habenero. Funny story about habeneros. My ex know-it-all British husband picked some habeneros out of my garden and I suggested that he use gloves. He pish-poshed that. Later he told me that not only did he have stinging fingers, he had taken a pee and ... well, the resin from the pepeper on his fingers burnt him other... -

Last night we had the best pork ribs ever. I stopped by a Latin produce store and they had smoked, dried poblano peppers. I picked up four for 50 cents. I just happened to have pork ribs simmering in the crock pot with NE Carolina vinegar sauce, and stuck one of those dried peppers in there. We finished the ribs off on the grill. Ribs with sauerkraut... -

I asked my neurologist if depression, apathy and anxiety could be considered neurological vs. psychiatrical responses to being gluttened. She said those symptoms were psychiatric, but I'm not sure she's correct. And I don't think most medical professionals know the full extent of this confounding disease. I'm surprised that you would ingest gluten and... -

Sound like it's time to have the "Come to Jesus" talk with your husband. This is a disease, it isn't a choice. celiac disease can lead to a number of serious medical problems if you continually get glutened by his carelessness. He needs to step up to the plate and help, not hinder. He needs to have his toast on a paper plate or towel, and throw what... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Clean Gluten
Marilyn R replied to Newtoitall's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I remember an older post about this, and someone said Formula 409 is great. I usually wipe down surfaces with vinegar and hot water or (1-3 or 4) or bleach and water using latex gloves. Then I toss the dishcloth in the laundry. (I'm OCD about dishcloths.) Don't you wish you could just send them outside with their gluten? Like smokers? Maybe in 20 years... -

The first thing is hope. Hope that you will figure out what it is that is upsetting your system so you can avoid it in the future. Hope and confidence that you will feel crummy for a couple of days to a week, but that you will feel better. Perspective. Even my worse days are better than my best days before. Preparedness.
