ARCHIVED 3 Years Into gluten-free Diet And Tired Of Being Different
IrishHeart replied to lloydke's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just read a comment on someone's gluten-free blog. She said (in reference to my calling overcoming this disease and living "normally" a bit of a battle sometimes, but it can be won) "The celiac community leaves no man behind. We are each other's reinforcements." I loved that! No one GETS it like another one walking the same path. -
ARCHIVED Any Thoughts On Integrative Medicine And The Treatment Of celiac disease
IrishHeart replied to lloydke's topic in Doctors
Depends on WHY you are consulting one. Do you need follow-up blood work, testing, that sort of thing? Naturopaths cannot do that. MDs who are "integrative" can, but they may not be covered by insurance. Do you need dietary advice (you can get that here for free ) Want my HONEST answer, based on my experiences? -
ARCHIVED Vitamins/supplements
IrishHeart replied to KMMO320's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What advice were you given re: iron supps and B-12? amounts to supp, I mean? They told you they were low, so what amount should you supplement? and P.S. Iron supps can cause major C, just so you know. You may need to take fiber in (like flaxseed meal or psyllium and LOTS of H20) to keep things moving. -
Loved Rebecca. I used to teach a course called "Mystery and Detective Fiction" and that book was on the reading list. GREAT novel.

ARCHIVED Need To Pick Your Brains Friends- Why Is My Dad Losing Muscle?
IrishHeart replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is probably a moot point, given his disdain for docs, but has he had an over-50 colonoscopy or prostate exam? I hate to bring up the "C" word, but hubs suggested this as a reason for his muscle wasting and I thought I'd throw that out to you. As an aside, my Dad is gone now, but I had to chuckle at the thought of ME having a conversation with... -

ARCHIVED Testing Question
IrishHeart replied to ker0pi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
4 days is not a lot of time, so no worries, but yes, go back to eating your regular gluteny diet. Have whatever you want!! Have a croissant for me will you? ooh, and if you can find it, some baklava (those are the two things I miss and cannot recreate) When is the test? Feeling better off gluten is a good indicator though! You may be "one of us... -

K, Can your Mom do dairy? If so, this is Kelli Bronski's Strawberry Soup I think it would be yummy for breakfast or dessert too. 1 quart strawberries, hulled 1 cup vanilla yogurt 1/4 cup honey 1 cup half and half Combine berries, yogurt and honey in a food processor. Blend until smooth. Pour in the half and half while blending until incorporated... -
ARCHIVED Just So Tired Of It All
IrishHeart replied to BitterGrad's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was going to post this same suggestion. It IS very good (and this is coming from another wicked "foodie" --someone who ONLY liked her own homemade pizza dough-- even BEFORE DX. Damn, that was a GREAT crust ) Also, CHEBE mixes are grain free. Try those maybe? Have a Green's or Bard's and tell yourself it's a Guinness. As for venting... -

IrishHeart replied to Skittles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
oh, Hon, no one is trying to make you feel stupid. Not at all! We are worried about you doing this thing!! It is NOT a good idea. Of course you are uncomfortable--I KNOW, I had C and D my whole life. A tablespoon of ground flaxseed meal or gluten-free psyllium husks in 16 Oz. of water twice a day will "get you going". Take probiotics. DRINK... -

IrishHeart replied to lloydke's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gemini knows my feelings on this topic because I tell her all the time: Someday WE will be the majority. You'll see. (and hey, that flamingly liberal state produced MOI ... ) To the OP: Hon, it is difficult sometimes--just for the convenience factor--but I do not let it bother me one bit. I'd rather be healthy than sick from all that... -
ARCHIVED Complete Body Cleanse Products
IrishHeart replied to Skittles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Clean you out of what? I do NOT recommend that any newly diagnosed celiac or anyone suffering from intestinal issues of any kind do a colon cleanse. Your intestinal walls are ravaged and trying to REGROW the mucosal lining. It is contraindicated in inflammatory bowel diseases. Who on earth suggested this to you? -
ARCHIVED Just Curious, Sleep Issues - How Long After Gluten?
IrishHeart replied to benj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I look back and my whole life makes sense. Every single problem is related to the celiac/gluten. I had to stop being angry about what happened to me and thinking "wish I had known sooner". I was very ill from celiac disease for many years and was slowly dying, but I'm getting better now. I am so glad you are feeling better off gluten! and oh... -
ARCHIVED Just Curious, Sleep Issues - How Long After Gluten?
IrishHeart replied to benj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gluten can cause ANY of your symptoms to return. How long they last varies from person to person. Yep, Twizzlers are a no no!! I used love those.... In fact, when I was very ill (and before I knew I had celiac disease) I used have hubs get me bags and bags of those. Sometimes, it was all I could choke down. Those and sun chips. Little did I... -

ARCHIVED Need To Pick Your Brains Friends- Why Is My Dad Losing Muscle?
IrishHeart replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Muscle wasting? or he's just thinner now? Going primal is going to make him even thinner (at first). And he may not like it very much either. I had serious muscle wasting but that was when I was very ill from UnDXed celiac. I was overweight, then lost 90+ lbs. so I looked like a wrinkly shar-pei. Really awful. I am gaining weight back so I look... -
ARCHIVED New & Need Help Interpreting Biopsy Results
IrishHeart replied to Carrie923's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There is no standardization in current tests. A number of tests, sometimes collectively referred to as the Celiac Blood Panel or Cascade, will aid in diagnosis. The tests may include, but are not limited to: Serologic Tests EMA (Immunoglobulin A anti-endomysium antibodies) AGA (IgA anti-gliadin antibodies) Some people do not produce IgA antibodies...
