  1. I have horrible reactions to things derived from corn like xanthan gum, caramel color etc. But I never did react horribly to things like popcorn so last night I decided to try a corn tortilla to see if I would react....and I didn't! Does anyone else have a problem with some parts of a product and not others? While I'm relived that I can have corn tortillas...
  2. You're right, the recipes are corn free as well. I'm sorry about your difficulties! It would be hard to deal with this and not enjoy cooking. I would suggest perhaps trying maybe a recipe a week and seeing if you can at least come to tolerate it. I would hit up the local bank for a checking account with a debit card. That way you can order everything...
  3. I'm less sensitive to gluten than I am to other food items, but still I have gotten a little cc from time to time. On the whole, I've had great experiences eating out. I usually either order a salad with plain chicken, or some type of meat and a plain baked potato. Honestly, it's more often me that cc's myself. The restaurants have all been great, and...
  4. I've found that drinking warm prune juice before I go to bed is also very helpful. I love prunes and the like so it's not torture for me. And no, you're not alone with that symptom.
  5. I use guar gum for things with chocolate (I think it has a strong flavor), I've used unflavored gelatin with sucess, you can also make a slurry out of flaxseed and hot water and wait until it gets thick and gummy and use that. None of them really get that "elastic" feeling going, but I don't have anything to compare it to because I didn't have a chance to...
  6. Wow, good point. Thank you so much for sharing!I will definitely keep that in mind for future outings. What a great way to look at it.
  7. My worst reactions are to soy oil. Instant migraine and a feeling of "chemical haze" that lasts for 2 days. It's so bad I have to stay home from work, and I've gotten to be quite adept at working and socializing like nothing is wrong when I feel like my insides are dying. I find it interesting that people feel they can decide that an allergy or intolerance...
  8. Just fyi - check out the natural peanut butter section of your store. I found little packets of peanut butter, almond butter, and honey almond butter. I packed those in my suitcase in a plastic baggie with a bag of apples, oranges and a ton of other stuff and they didn't even blink. Lara bars, nuts, fruit and veggies all travel well. I've found that as...
  9. Raisins, apples, maybe some sunflower seed butter to go on the apples. I keep a lot more in my purse, but I don't need to be nut free. That's hard!
  10. Hmm, I was thinking about doing that diet. Have the book, but still thinking.... I've gotten really good about knowing what foods mean corn. What has tripped me up lately is cc in oil, and then meat packed in a solution that I didn't even realize was there (you'd think it would be safe!). I definitely cook all my own food, and that cuts down on the problems...
  11. Hey, better to laugh than cry. I am so sorry to hear that you "corned" yourself! Funny thing, I did too! I cooked my ribs separate, made my own potato salad with homemade mayonnaise, used my own homemade bbq sauce and still got sick. The sad part was I had spent the whole afternoon making "everything free" food for the 4th evening party. We had a whole...
  12. If you are picky about your chocolate I would recommend not wasting your money on the Enjoy Life bars. They're ok in a horrible pinch (and really close to the only chocolate I can have) but it's waxy and not as good. I do love their mini chocolate chips though. They make great cookies and are perfect for chocolate dipped strawberries!
  13. I called them, and while the gal was very nice and helpful she had no good answers for me. If the product is not one of the top 8 allergens they don't have good information for cross contamination. I'm pretty certain that my oil was cc'd with corn. I'm just so sensitive that it doesn't take much. >sigh< yet another thing I have to worry about.
  14. I ran out of the oil I usually use (cheap brand from Winco) and so ended up buying Wesson Canola Oil from Albertsons here in town. That night I had a horrible reaction like I had eaten corn or soy, but I cooked all my own food and there's nothing else I can think of. The reaction was so significant that my stomach was still sore and tender a week later. I...
  15. Yeah, I really have to second mommida here. I have traveled the world and have talked and interacted with many people from different races. I've met kind Europeans, and Europeans that wouldn't spit on me if I was on fire. To say that all Americans are one way is a sweeping generalization that cannot help but be false. Some Americans are rude. It has NOTHING...
  16. Corn makes me so sick that I wouldn't intentionally buy anything that listed a corn ingredient. I'm sure it could possibly be in my current cleaners, but I haven't gotten that far in my corn research. But then, I'm sensitive enough that I got sick handling powdered sugar (contains cornstarch).
  17. Ok, I did some more checking and it appears that baking soda is good to use, so I will continue that. All of Tom's of Maine toothpaste contains corn in some way or another so that, unfortunately, is out. Acetaminophen is NSAID free usually, but I just am having a hard time finding one that is corn free. >sigh< I guess I will just learn to suffer...
  18. I'm looking for a OTC pain killer that is Corn, Soy, Dairy, gluten and NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory) free. I just am worried that I'm going to be in pain at some point and not have anything to use for it. I usually only take pain killer for a horrible head ache or cramps - 6 or less times a year. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?? I...
  19. You might want to take a look at other food items that might be making you sick. Keeping a food journal will really help in this. I'm younger (28) and got relief from my symptoms pretty quickly, but discovered some other issues along the way. Definitely be suspicious of dairy and soy. I found that every couple of weeks at first I "lost" something. My theory...
  20. I've made it a policy that I won't cook anything that I can't eat. That way I don't have to worry about my kitchen, my utensils, and my propensity to taste something without thinking. Honestly, there are so many great recipes out there for "everything free" cooking that there are a lot of options. I just threw my sister a baby shower and did all the...
  21. The tempura batter I made with rice flour, egg white and seltzer water (so crunchy and yummy!!) All the fruit I "allow" myself to buy now (pineapple, strawberries, kiwi etc) Quinoa Elana's Pantry Gluten free bread 2.0 Oatmeal flour cookies with raisins and nuts. Simply Orange juice Wine!
  22. Yep, caffeine is a no go for me now. Coffee will make my joints hurt like there is no tomorrow (yeah, I'm only 28) and I get a massive dose of insomnia. Just plain caffeine in tea (can't have any pop because of corn) makes my hands hurt and I get jumpy. I've transitioned everything to decaf, except for coffee which is just out. I have a theory on this...
  23. Thanks for the link! I keep meaning to make some...but I forget to pick up the alcohol.
  24. The recipe calls for vanila....which is difficult/impossible to find corn free. I wonder if she realized this. I am so excited to see that I will be able to have rice crispy treats this Christmas!!
  25. Yep, I've lost 34 pounds since February 1st. I too would gain "mysterious" weight and always felt that the amount I was eating was not great enough to translate to the weight I was gaining. I have hit a bit of a wall on the weight loss, but I think that's because I have started experimenting with different flours so baked goods are back in my diet again....
