  1. I'm sorry that you had that experience with your doctor. Reading that makes me really upset for you. Because of the wide range of symptoms (and the fact that no symptoms is a symptom), you can never say to someone "you don't have Celiac" without testing them. Those two doctors are idiots. Don't go back to either one of them. And good for you for taking...
  2. I think that sounds wonderful. You'd be surprised how much easier it is to host a holiday dinner than go to one. If it does work out, a few quick tips off the top of my head: -Ask that no one brings food with them. Only alcohol. -Use an oven bag for the turkey - no basting! I don't know why I didn't use an oven bag all along (and make sure...
  3. Yup. I'll go away soon.
  4. It's worth a try. I know a lot of people who feel better when they go gluten free (even without having Celiac). Non-Celiac gluten intolerance is not a rare thing these days. I went dairy free for the first few months of my Celiac diagnosis. It turns out that I can eat dairy just fine these days. But it didn't hurt to try. Just make sure that if you...
  5. I had another one last night. I ate some junkie mac and cheese and said, "Well, now let's time how long my reaction takes to kick in." I don't know what my reaction time is. I've considered glutening myself to find out, but then I think it's silly to make myself feel miserable for a week. Much better things to do with my time. Funny that I still have...
  6. Exactly what I was thinking, but you said it better
  7. I'm not an expert in skin conditions related to Celiac, but it does sound like Celiac could be a possibility, especially since there is a family history of it. The best you can do is wait until December or try to get seen by another doctor sooner. Good luck!
  8. I was diagnosed in my 20's and did my first holiday on my own with a gluten free friend (it was Thanksgiving and I cooked a wonderful meal all by myself). Holidays are hard, and each time I travel to a different place for a holiday I always have to be on guard. I'm still learning about the best way to talk with people about my needs. My advice - holidays...
  9. People responding have to remember that the OP is 5"6, incredibly active, and is consuming 1500 calories a day - I would not recommend cutting many more calories out of your diet for fear that your metabolism will slow down. With how active you are, you need the calories and nutrients. I'm not a nutritionist, but I am a personal trainer, and I get very wary...
  10. In my experience, IBS is a collection of symptoms and a name that doctors give you when they can't figure out what's wrong with you. It could be that you have a gluten intolerance rather than Celiac, but if you want to truly see if you have Celiac, I would drive to a bigger town where you can find a doctor who is more open to giving you a blood test. But...
  11. I can't have eggs (only okay in baked goods - no scrambled eggs or omelettes). When I do I get awful acid reflux that lasts for days. Also a symptom that I associate with gluten.
  12. What's scary about Celiac is that most any symptom you can think of can be Celiac-related - even having no symptoms! I have a Celiac friend whose only symptom is joint pain. And another friend who has neurological symptoms (she wasn't tested, so we don't know if she has Celiac or a gluten intolerance). Don't rule out Celiac just because you aren't having...
  13. I like Schar - I didn't need to toast it! But pretty expensive. I enjoy baking so I tend to bake my own from scratch. Or I get Udi's from Trader Joe's if it's too hot to use my oven.
  14. I avoid anything on shared equipment or in the same facility unless I speak with the company. A few have told me that they take Celiac very seriously, explained how they keep foods separate, and what ppm their products test at. Some companies are very dishonest on their labels (hopefully the new FDA regulation will fix that). I heard of one instance...
  15. Thanks! Got it!
  16. They taste good AND they're beautiful!!
  17. Oh gotcha. I had heard there was also research being done on a pill that allows you to eat gluten on purpose. All I've heard are sketchy at this point.
  18. Huh. I hit "more reply options", but it just brought me to another page with a reply box exactly like the one I'm typing in now....hmm....
  19. I took the picture before I ate them all! And thanks!
  20. I agree that I wouldn't want to take anything daily. I don't like taking medication because of all the side effects and believe that if you can change your diet rather than taking pills for the rest of your life, then you're lucky. Taking a pill for a week to (for example) go on vacation to another country, on the other hand, I may consider. Although...
  21. I may be missing this, but is there a way to post photos in a thread? I'd love to show off how great my homemade bagels look
  22. I thought this would be a pretty funny topic. Has anyone had any bad dreams about glutening yourself? I've had a few, and they crack me up the next day. I've had this same dream about pizza and cupcakes: I happily take several bites of food. Put food down on the table. Look at food. Eyes go wide with realization. "Dear god, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?!...
  23. I think mine was triggered when I got mono in college. I remember getting stomach aches almost every night after that and it was difficult for me to put on weight.
  24. My latest conversations: At a restaurant, asking a waiter who seemed to know what gluten free was. Me: Is the chicken dish gluten free? Him: Well, I've eaten it before, and I didn't taste any flour in it... Me: Out to dinner with a big group of people. Drunk girl I don't know: Here, eat the couscous!! Me: No thanks, I can't. Drunk girl: Why...
  25. Loving fall recipes! Sometimes I wish I could just stay home all day and bake and eat....and bake and eat. again....
