  1. Haha, thanks guys. I figured I have a solid diagnosis, which is why I didn't order the gene test in the first place. At the time, I actually thought that my doctor was getting a little test happy, and I don't like it when doctors run tests for no reason.
  2. Ok, humor me with this one (with my personality I'm prone to anxiety and I've been dealing with a lot of stressful events lately). I'll probably go in for the gene test at some point, but it's silly of me to be worrying about my diagnosis now, right? I mean, I had four out of the five...
  3. That's interesting. I had never hear of the 4 out of 5 method. I always thought it was just the blood test and endoscopy. I had a tTg that was off the charts, an endoscopy with blunted villi, symptoms of Celiac, and a positive response to the diet. My doctor had wanted to do a gene test, but I didn't feel the need to since he told me I already had the diagnosis...
  4. I was just listening to a podcast that said there is new research to say that you cannot get diagnosed with Celiac from a blood test alone. I know an endoscopy is the golden standard test, but I've always understood that there are rarely false positive where blood tests are concerned. Has anyone heard of this thought on blood tests? The person on the podcast...
  5. What do you mean by "but that only works if I eat at home"? I understand that eating out or at other people's homes can be hard, but if you're going to do this, you need to eat gluten-free 100% no matter where you are. It's part of the commitment you make to yourself. You can eat out and at other people's homes safely if you do research/bring food with...
  6. In order to get a true diagnosis, you would have to go on a gluten-filled diet again, unfortunately. However, you can get your kids tested. Blood tests are easy to do, and they can also have a gene test done to see if they carry the gene for Celiac (you could do the gene test as well, but that will not give you an official diagnosis). Personally, if...
  7. I believe that I used rice flour, as well. Either that or my AP mix, though I don't think the type of gluten-free flour matters in this case.
  8. Hi everyone! Since the holidays are around the corner, I wanted to share my favorite holiday turkey tip to prevent CC. Two years ago I discovered a brilliant invention called oven bags. Clean and season your gluten free turkey, seal it in the bag, place it on a pan (I like using disposable aluminum pans in case the bag breaks), and stick it in...
  9. What???? She wanted you to have symptoms? Maybe she thought you were doing a gluten challenge? IDK I'm not sure if I've told this story on the board, but I went to a free Dr Oz event once - it was for people who felt exhausted (one of my symptoms), and they were doing free blood tests to check for nutritional deficiencies. I thought, "Great! I'll just...
  10. I used to bake hundreds of cookies each year and gave little goodie bags of them to all of my coworkers and friends. I loved, loved doing that. A lot of them were hand decorated with toothpicks. Now, I still make cookies (just not as many), and give them out only to close friends and family who are in town. I'll also bring some with me for my boyfriend's...
  11. I use Arrowhead Mills and like it a lot. I don't remember if it used to be made a the same facility that produces wheat (I just checked and my current bag doesn't mention it) - but I do remember calling the company about it, and they were really lovely. The woman was very assuring, and I trust the company. Also, I buy all my flours online, and you can...
  12. I've heard this debate quite often. I'll say "Yes, peanut allergies are immediately life threatening while Celiac isn't." But I will point out that undiagnosed or untreated Celiac can lead to a life filled with pain (heck, some people even get seizures when they're glutened!) and premature death. My great grandmother had stomach cancer when she died...
  13. Agreed - you are not a silent Celiac. You have symptoms, they just may not be as painful or annoying as others. Read labels. If you have a question, call the company and let them know you have Celiac. I tend to stay away from anything that says "produced at the same facility as wheat" or "on the same equipment as wheat" unless I speak with a customer...
  14. There could also have been some CC with the buckwheat, rather than the buckwheat itself.
  15. My frustration is a silly one - I love baking and when I go to work I tend to tell people about my last exciting baking creation. I have a lot of different locations that I go to (I'm a fitness instructor), and everyone tells me to bring them something. In my head I'm thinking, "I used my expensive flours; so many people want me to make them things;...
  16. Isn't Zicam just a big burst of zinc? Couldn't you take a supplement? I take a calcium/magnesium/zinc supplement every day. Also, I've heard that Zicam and other zinc products may not really work and it's just a placebo effect.
  17. I think it could be a good idea. I've known some new moms who feel very scatter-brained. They probably wouldn't remember that kind of gluten-free protocol and would just walk in feeding their kids Life cereal and cookies. Another perk is that hopefully your guests won't feel accosted by you reminding them when they walk in the door, and you won't feel annoying...
  18. I'm curious... Has there been any research that shows certain countries or nationalities where Celiac is more prevalent than others? I seem to hear a lot of Italian people with Celiac (me and my family included). Let's start a poll! What's your nationality? And do you have Celiac, a gluten sensitivity, or a wheat allergy?
  19. Thanks. You two are wonderful! I was not the happiest camper when I saw that and thought I'd have to buy a new one. We have to replace enough kitchen gadgets as it is!
  20. I have a plastic blender at my boyfriend's place. It's one of those personal blenders that can be used as a mug when you turn it right side up. Well, my boyfriend has a guest over who came in after a wedding last night (beer I'm sure was in the equation). I woke up this morning and found that he had used my blender as a cup for water. I don't know if he had...
  21. I wish I had known about that care package program when I was diagnosed! Enjoy your gluten-free goodies!!
  22. Oops, that was supposed to be Vegan Butternut Squash SOUP, lol
  23. I made this last week and need to make more soon! So easy and delicious! It also freezes well. Vegan Butternut Squash 1 medium butternut squash 1 medium onion 3 cloves garlic 1 can vegetable stock 2 tbs olive oil Pepper Cinnamon Place oil in large pot along with diced onion. Heat until onion is soft. Meanwhile, cut skin off of squash. Cube...
  24. I wanted to say thank you to everyone on this forum. I've been reflecting a lot on where I was 2 1/2 years ago. I was the first of my friends to be diagnosed (since then, several of my friends/family have gone gluten-free), and during a very difficult and emotional time in my life it was a godsend to know that I wasn't alone. I had friends with funny...
  25. What is wonderful about this board is that we all are in (relatively) the same boat. It's a wonderful, supportive community. I found a lot of comfort here when I was first diagnosed, and I still do. Browse around the boards for a bit. It may seem overwhelming at first, so just keep taking one step forward at a time. Focus on the positive aspect of finally...
