  1. Flat out, your doctors are idiots. A friend of mine had a doctor who said the same thing, even after she had been gluten free for two years. Stupid doctors.... My blood tests were so positive they were off the charts, and it took me about a year and a half to get them down to normal, but even being gluten free for a few weeks can yield a false negative...
  2. Sorry to hear that you're not doing well. From the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center: "The gut needs time to mount an antibody response that can be measured in the blood, which is why we recommend 12 weeks of eating gluten. If you experience symptoms immediately, it’s likely that the gut itself has quickly become damaged. In these cases, ...
  3. Which is why I stuck with Pinot Grigio
  4. Funny thing, I was at a wine shop tonight picking out a bottle of white. I saw a red velvet cupcake flavored wine, and even though I know that wine is gluten free I was still like , lol.
  5. Haha 1 cup almond milk 1 tbs coco powder 1/2 tsp vanilla extract The amount of stevia depends on how many grams of sugar is in your almond milk. If there's a lot of sugar, you may not need to sweeten it at all. I get the unsweetened kind and use one or two individual packets of stevia. But that is all done to taste, so taste it while you're heating...
  6. And let me know when you're ready to make pumpkin bread - I'll give you my recipe
  7. Yup - I use a small saucepan and heat it up on the stove. Super easy
  8. Off the top of my head: I would get a new set of Tupperware to be dedicated gluten-free, especially if your current Tupperware has scratches on them. Did you buy a new bread maker or are you using an old one? You don't need to throw away your cookie sheets. Use parchment paper on them. A lot of gluten-free cookie recipes will suggest using it...
  9. Oh no, when you go to NYC do not eat at the train station - there are waaaayyyy too many amazing restaurants in the city! I know of a few good restaurants on the Upper West Side, but they may be a little pricey. Depends on what you're looking for. But if there's a restaurant you really want to try, it would only be a subway ride away. Good (& safe...
  10. You asked the right person! My friend and I made this gluten-free map of restaurants in NYC. However, when I give it out to people, I let them know that I have not tried or contacted all of the restaurants myself, so I don't know about their individual precautions for cross-contamination. When you pick one of them, definitely give them a call and ask Personally...
  11. Agreed it would be good to add to the newbie thread, but I had heard about this through the grapevine and I am not a newbie. I think it's important to keep each other updated on supposedly "new research" and what is true/false, not just automatically stick it in a section that only newbies would read Thank you again for the correct information.
  12. My mistake. I had heard about cross-reactive foods a few times, so I thought I'd post something. Thanks for clearing that up!
  13. If you ever visit NYC there is a great meet up group and a few of us who live nearby
  14. I read that the protein in coffee is similar in structure to the protein of gluten. Sometimes the body gets tricked and thus you get sick. Open Original Shared Link
  15. There are SOOO many pumpkin recipes out there right now, and I love it! I make pumpkin bread twice a year - and only twice because I get selfish and eat the entire batch within a few days I've seen some great looking crepe and smoothie recipes, too. You're bound to find a bunch of good stuff. As for hot chocolate - I make my own with almond milk, coco...
  16. Hi there! Welcome to the board. Good for you for taking your health into your own hands. To answer your questions: Yes, if you have the gene for Celiac it can "turn on" at any time in your life. I didn't start having symptoms until college and was diagnosed several years later. (Side note: I was also the first in my family to get diagnosed, so even if...
  17. Correction. It was today's episode (Monday).
  18. Okay, I love Ellen. Like LOVE LOVE her. And I know that we need to have a sense of humor about ourselves...but.... She had a segment about funny dating websites, and she started with the new gluten free dating site. And it made me kinda sad. Because while the idea of this site may seem like a little bit much, even for some people on this board, the fact...
  19. I have heard about some CC issues with coffee, so that might be something to double check
  20. I'll take your tea! lol I've done that before. Just end up giving all my food away.
  21. Well, she could be making wheat pastries and telling people they are gluten-free which is the scary part. I spoke with my sister. She studied pastry art at Johnson and Wales. They were taught about cooking for people with different food intolerances, not just gluten. She learned which flours have wheat in it and basic CC. They would wash everything really...
  22. Fresh fruit. I often bring little bags of snap peas with me on a busy day. There are some good protein bars that don't have nuts in them. Disclaimer - I don't know if there are peanuts in them, but check out Bakery on Main Bars (they do have nuts) and Simply Bars (contains soy protein; very low in sugar). I also carry a little ziplock bag with with plain...
  23. Even with a gluten intolerance you can't eat a wheat wrap. I have no idea what she's talking about People who are gluten intolerant can get VERY sick. They just won't have the same internal damage as Celiacs. My best advice - stay away from her cooking, obviously. Since you said she's the type of person who always has to be right, she'll most likely...
  24. Oh my goodness!!!!!! That's terrible!!! I hope your boyfriend isn't listening to her. If he starts to, ask him to read a few things on this board. He is wonderful for being protective and brushing his teeth. It's exactly what he should be doing for someone he cares about. When did she graduate? And where? I wonder if you could ask to read her paper...
  25. If you go with Arrowhead Mills, check the packaging to make sure it doesn't say anything about wheat in the same facility. Always good to check!
