  1. Here is the "Dining Out" page from the Celiac Center at Beth Israel in Boston: Open Original Shared Link Another site for shopping/eating out: Open Original Shared Link I don't have a smartphone but there are apps that will point you to gluten-free foods and restaurants. Best book you can buy is "Real Life with Celiac Disease" - written by the...
  2. Everyone is different in terms of healing time. I noticed a dramatic improvement from the worst symptoms almost immediately (days to weeks). Then it was very up and down after that. I took another step forward after 6 months (when I gave up soy). Overall it took 18 months before I felt more healthy than sick on a consistent basis. 18 months is a timeframe...
  3. I'm not entering the gluten/casein debate, but regarding your original question about peanut butter, I don't do well with it in general. The last one I tried was Teddie's because that's all they make. Just peanuts and salt. No other ingredients, and I confirmed with them that it's a gluten free facility (only possible allergens: other nuts and soy). I still...
  4. I use Gillians breadcrumbs when I make meatloaf with no trouble, and I'm very sensitive. I think sweet potatoes can be risky if they had a wheat/rye cover crop. I always wash, peel, and re-wash my sweet potatoes just in case.

    ARCHIVED Doctors In Boston

    Dr. Leffler. Is the best.
  6. Thanks for posting this. It took me a while to find the link, so here it is: Open Original Shared Link This was the diet designed to limit trace contamination: "For three to six months, the study subjects ate only fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, poultry and fish, eggs, unflavored dairy products and rice. They were allowed to have oil, vinegar...
  7. I just came across this link. I don't even know what to say. For every time I get sick without knowing why, I don't want to have to worry about my paper towels, containers which hold the food I buy, etc. Open Original Shared Link

  9. I developed anterior blepharitis at the same time I first got sick three years ago. It went away as soon as I gave up dairy and it hasn't come back since. It still took me almost another year to figure out about gluten, but for me that particular symptom was linked exclusively to casein and has not been re-triggered by cross-contamination.
  10. Uh, have you had your vit B12 levels tested? And vit D? Because while calcium is super important for bones and stuff, your symptoms seem more in line with a vit B12 deficiency, or possibly vit D, both of which are super common with celiac. Also with no dairy in our diet, we have to work extra hard to get these vitamins. Especially if you don't eat a lot...
  11. We've all been there! Thanks for the post and hope you're feeling better!
  12. I don't know about the sugar, but Taza Chocolate makes gluten, dairy, soy free chocolates. They're strong, so if they're using any sugar it's not very much.
  13. Where did you hear about Almond Breeze being milled through barley? What kind of evidence do you have? I have never heard this, and all their products are gluten free per their website. I'm very sensitive and have no issues with Almond Breeze almond milk. I have, however, reacted to Pacific, which also produces a gluten-containing multigrain milk on shared...
  14. I'm even more sensitive to dairy than to gluten, if that's possible. So everybody is different. And while I don't find it harder to avoid, it is much tougher on me emotionally. After a few years down this path, I don't really miss gluten (something as a former bread and pasta addict I never would have thought possible). I don't miss milk (I actually prefer...
  15. My family has always made our own mayonnaise (it's common to do this in Spain and France). Super-easy. This is our recipe: Ingredients 2 eggs (can also use 1 egg for smaller amount, but beginners should start with 2 as it will blend more easily) 1 tablespoon lemon juice (from 1/2 a lemon), or to taste Salt About 2 cups olive oil (use regular...
  16. I'm super-sensitive and I'm able to use Argo cornstarch. I was surprised by the letter posted above because I haven't reacted to Argo, and I can't handle anything produced in shared facilities. For example, I haven't found a single cereal I can handle because they're all made in shared facilities (at least as far as I've found). I couldn't figure out what...
  17. I drink Cold River vodka - made in Maine from potatoes. I've reacted to Sake in the past, which (at the least the kind I tried) uses barley early in the process (before distillation). Super-sensitives do need to be careful.
  18. Not all hairsprays have wheat in them. Can you just look for a salon that doesn't use gluten-containing products? My salon is a Neuma salon - all their products are gluten free and vegan (along with no parabens, etc.)

    ARCHIVED Jail/prison

Wow. This thread is fascinating. While someone "officially" diagnosed with celiac might be able to get a gluten-free diet while in prison, what about NCGS patients? I wonder if someone like myself, who never was officially diagnosed, would be able to get the diet, even though my doctor treats me as if I'm a celiac?
  20. I gave the chocolates to students (I work in a college). They were thrilled!
  21. I agree that I wouldn't undergo a gluten challenge. No way, no how. But, will the doctor still do the endoscopy even if you stay off the gluten? It could be useful anyway, as they can look for other things (such as H Pylori) while in there.
  22. I work with a group of about 15-coworkers. To varying degrees, they are all aware of my issues. Though I try not to make a big deal about it, and I am of course closer to some than to others. A few of the people in department like to hand out Christmas gifts - usually the same thing to everyone. This year I got Ferrer-Rocher chocolates (Wheat, Milk, and Soy...
  23. Just last night, I had a stress dream that my aunt (wonderful cook) was trying to cook safely for me while I stressed out about it. In the dream I ate a piece of french bread, was immediately horrified when I realized what I was doing, and woke up all freaked out from it. Luckily I don't have these dreams too often.
