ARCHIVED Four Months In And Feeling AloneJenniferxgfx replied to mollydee88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Ugh. The only person who can pull that label-reading joke is my husband. I just don't find it funny at all but I know he's not doing it to be mean, and he doesn't do it when I'm upset or overly hungry. He has good timing. But it's not funny at all when anyone else does it. Good luck! Anemia is way more likely than leukemia btw, but I had the same worries...

ARCHIVED Banana Allergy?Jenniferxgfx replied to allergyprone's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut I have a latex allergy that's gotten worse over time. I carried my own box of nitrile gloves in college for labs because it was easier than getting the school to provide them. One box lasted a few semesters and I had a lot of labs. Buying your own means you can get the best (textured fingers!) in colors you like and for a few bucks. You'll be the envy of...

ARCHIVED Worried About Calories, Refractory Sprue, And Basically EverythingJenniferxgfx replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Ps: I haven't had any trouble with beans or lentils, personally.

ARCHIVED Worried About Calories, Refractory Sprue, And Basically EverythingJenniferxgfx replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I also suggest super sensitive celiac. Your millet cereal may have some cc, even. Any grains may be processed on equipment not cleaned well enough for your sensitivity. I've never found rice to be an issue, although some other people do. Maybe give up the millet for a bit? I suggest not over complicating matters unless absolutely necessary-- since you...

ARCHIVED Four Months In And Feeling AloneJenniferxgfx replied to mollydee88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I'm 4 months in too! (in a week.) we're like celiac buddies I had a nice appointment with my allergist yesterday, and I asked him about my numb hand every time I'm exposed to gluten. He said from an allergy perspective he had no ideas, but to make sure it's not something else, and to try not to blame the gluten for everything right off the bat. It's...

ARCHIVED Need To Grocerie ShopJenniferxgfx replied to RVluvin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I forgot about online shopping! If you have space, when you find a non perishable item you like, you may be able to find it online cheaper. My husband went a little crazy online and got a case of pretzels and cookies we like, and stocked up on Lara bars and peanuts. We saved money and it's a few less items to stress over at the store.

ARCHIVED What Should I ExpectJenniferxgfx replied to TTNOGluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I had reflux for years and not until I realized I probably had celiac (recently!) did I learn the wonders of pepto bismol. It's not perfect but it really takes the edge off for me. I cant stomach liquid meds, but I take the pills with tons of water and find it helps. Also, insufficient stomach acid (usually from lots of heartburn meds) can feel the same as...

ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?Jenniferxgfx replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease What a happy ending-- and beginning!! I'm so glad for you Have a wonderful honeymoon!!

ARCHIVED Need To Grocerie ShopJenniferxgfx replied to RVluvin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Plan extra time for your shopping trip, and don't go there on an empty stomach. I made that mistake. By week 2 I was famished and in a huge calorie deficit, and needed a lot more than I was eating. I nearly had a meltdown in the store with my husband because so many of my favorite items had hidden gluten. I eat a vegan diet and lots of whole foods, but my...

ARCHIVED Shocked! Don't Know What To Think?Jenniferxgfx replied to lcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Scientists don't know all the genes associated with celiac (or GI), so there's no way to be sure if someone's got GI or celiac. What matters is if gluten makes you sick, you need to avoid it. The names are just semantics. Your reactions to gluten are so serious and intestinal it makes me think you're proof there's more genes involved in celiac than the...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Samples At The Health Food StoreJenniferxgfx replied to adab8ca's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I've been leery of samples since going gluten-free because I just don't know how clean the prep area and platters and stuff are. Sometimes it seems safe-- using clean Popsicle sticks for samples fresh from a package and no other products (once there was a fava bean dip!) but mostly I skip them. I used to LOVE free samples, so it's a tiny bummer but I don...

ARCHIVED Reaction To Coconut MilkJenniferxgfx replied to Fairy Dancer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease My money is on those sulfites. Those are scary buggers and I have a similar reaction. (although the reflux may likely be from the other ingredients, I may have an esophagitis reaction to the sulfites if there's a LOT, like poor quality dried fruit.) Which coconut milk is this? I like to know what brand to stay away from!

New Grist is my favorite beer! So good to hear things are going well

ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?Jenniferxgfx replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I hope the gluten-free cake is amazing!

ARCHIVED Making Fun Of Gluten Issues On New Cbs ShowJenniferxgfx replied to Kate79's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Studies have shown doctors (like patients) get their general health info from the media, in the form of drug ads and news bites. I don't think restaurant cooks live in a bubble and are immune to a casual attitude about celiac disease.

ARCHIVED Purposely GlutenedJenniferxgfx replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Hell no. I lost my career due to celiac and my personal life has suffered greatly, too, not even considering the terrible reactions I have to cc. When I look at known gluten culprits, all I see is poison and suffering and loss. I grew up on dunkin donuts, and their taste isn't worth what I've lost. Hope you feel better soon.

ARCHIVED My Cat Is No Longer Afraid Of Heights?Jenniferxgfx posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff I know this board isn't about nonhuman animals, but there's no one else I think will "get" this! I have this one cat who has never cared for high places. We have tall condos and cat shelves the other 2 love, but we always assumed Lillian was a "bush-dweller" and prefered low spots. She looked terrified if we ever put her any higher than the couch, and would...

ARCHIVED I Don't Understand "borderline Celiac"Jenniferxgfx replied to NCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms That doctors ethics worry me. It sounds like your family may be his guinea pigs. Borderline celiac is like a little bit pregnant. Not possible.

Oh I Forgot! I also like Queen Helene's Mint Julep face masque once in awhile.

ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction?Jenniferxgfx replied to Fairy Dancer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease My vote is the gluten!

ARCHIVED Worse Reaction With Certain Foods?Jenniferxgfx replied to espresso261's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I haven't been able to eat fried foods for years! Fried foods would give me such violent D and GI pain that I thought it was a fatty food intolerance. I ate a very low fat diet (much too low, I'm learning now, as the brain needs fats!) and avoided fried foods except an occasional French fry from my husbands plate ate a restaurant. My gall bladder wasnt diseased...

ARCHIVED Feeling Really Unwell!Jenniferxgfx replied to Sanaa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease Oh one more thing! Have you had your vitamin levels checked? B12 and iron are very likely to be low with celiac, and can cause weakness and dizziness. Vitamin D is also important and often low. Are you in a position to get them checked through the clinic?

ARCHIVED Feeling Really Unwell!Jenniferxgfx replied to Sanaa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease Have you eliminated all sources of gluten or contamination? Medications, health and beauty products, old cutting boards, food storage containers, toothbrushes, your keyboard and mouse... Stuf where crumbs can hide? Are you eating dairy? Some celiacs can't digest dairy until their villi heal up and come back, although some can't even have it then. Dairy...

ARCHIVED How Bad Can Withdrawl Get?Jenniferxgfx replied to Applegirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease My gluten withdrawals were scary. They were so uncomfortable I actually don't remember most of it. I remember the worst headache of my life, crawling skin, and anxiety/antsiness. All to an extreme... I literally (and melodramatically) felt like a heroin addict going through detox. It was hardcore. Hang in there and hydrate! If it doesn't subside, it's...

ARCHIVED I'm BackJenniferxgfx replied to unknown's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease It's okay to be sad about the loss you're experiencing! Also, gluten has a bit of a morphine-like effect on the brain (so does casein in milk), which can make our love of these foods extra strong and biological in nature. Beware of the withdrawal symptoms (for me it was te worst headache of my life for several days and off and on a few weeks, but after it...
