  1. I didn't know I had celiac when I got married, but I had chronic pain and GI issues that affected our honeymoon activities... While we expected them, if I'd known then what I'd known now, I'd have gone completely without cake if a gluten-free option wasn't available. Share and feed each other decadent beautiful berries, or chocolates, or anything but those...
  2. I have nothing to value to add except cheerleading: that's great you're figuring this out. I hope this last month passes quick for you. Thanks again for all you're doing out there. I love our troops for the hard work you do, but to also do that in the midst of your health troubles, I think that's pretty tough. It doesn't go unnoticed.
  3. I love beans. I've never understood the aversion to them unless someone is intolerant. They're cheap, full of nutrients, and have fiber that meat lacks. I love em. I also am very sensitive to iodine. Even before I knew about celiac, I gave up dairy and my skin cleared SO MUCH. if only I'd known about gluten sooner!! That was the last piece of the puzzle...
  4. What about milk? Celiacs often can't digest milk till they heal (sometimes never, too), because of the damage to the small intestine. Also milk tends to be high in iodine, which could aggravate dermatitis herpetiformis, or dh, which could be the rash he's getting. He might be better served having less pre-made food and more whole foods (cook the chicken...
  5. Do you take thyroid meds? Are they gluten free? (same with your other meds but I hear the most popular thyroid med isn't gluten-free.) just a thought-- maybe you're getting gluten from elsewhere. I'd gone gluten-lite before being tested so my results were negative, although I'm sure gluten is bad for me and I'll never go back on for a test. Good luck...
  6. Did they do biopsies with all those scopes? I was told I have gastroparesis and given reglan for a few years. I ended up figuring out celiac on my own and being gluten free has done wonders for my symptoms... Then I saw an allergist recently and he said it was more likely eosinophilic esophagitis and my triggers are pretty normal (wheat, dairy, eggs).......
  7. Wait, you went gluten-free and then had your ttg rechecked at 6 weeks? And it's normal? That tells me you're doing well on the diet and responding just as you should. You need to continue eating glutenfree, NOT resume eating gluten! Good luck. I've had such bad interactions with docs I can't be objective. I think this guy who told you this is irresponsible...
  8. I use really dilute Dr. Bronner's liquid baby soap On my face if I feel greasy but mostly I just use lots and lots of water. I try not to use much because I'm so sensitive and do better without it. I use the dr b's as a body wash, too. Sorry I don't have better suggestions!
  9. Sponges are evil! I kept reacting whenever I do thedishes after someone else has done any kitchen cleaning... I realized the sponge was being used for gluten (like the cat food dishes, which I always soaked/rinsed/never sponged, but no one else did it that way). we've now changed food so it's ok, but I had to replace the sponge. I used to run them through...
  10. I'm 3 months in and definitely feel like I'm on a recovery roller coaster too. Overall I'm improving but I've had a lot of backwards slides too. I think I'm so excited to have my head back that I end up overdoing it. Plus I discover all kinds of sources of cc! It takes awhile to recover all those lost nutrients (don't forget your leafy greens!), so...
  11. Is her whole life gluten free? Cosmetics, shower products, the pans & utensils used for her food strictly gluten-free? Does she come in contact with teammates after they eat? (shaking hands, etc) I only ask because nausea plagued me for years, treated as GERD (with drugs, which helped), and it went away when I went gluten-free, but it's one of the...
  12. First and foremost, I have my BRAIN back. I feel like sleeping beauty woke up... Like the last several years were a blur. I am a scientist again! And vainly: I have great hair and nails and skin! A lifetime of really bad skin, hair like straw that won't grow, and nails that won't grow-- and now they all feel foreign. It's nice and they're all lovely, but...
  13. Cetaphil makes me break out in the same way gluten does. I'm not convinced it's gluten-free enough for me.
  14. I've had that "I think I'm sweating but I'm not hot" reaction too. I can't believe how many years it took to figure it out. I read about dh years ago, too, and it seemed so obscure and doctors kept saying the only thing wrong with me was my fatness. I believed them, over and over. And it was dh all along! I used to eat a lot of iodine-heavy food too...
  15. I also had to leave a PhD program (twice), and given the economy, I think that'll work out in our favor. Heh. Sucks your mom isn't more supportive.
  16. I've had all kinds of rashes over the years. In high school I had what looked a lot like inverse psoriasis in my groin and underarms. In hindsight I DO think it was gluten-related. I've definitely found iodine makes all my skin troubles redder and angrier, so I recommend seeing if limiting iodine and cutting out gluten calms things down for you. ...
  17. Iodine is required for the chemical reaction taking place in the skin from a gluten response. Limiting iodine exposure while healing gives the lesions a better chance at healing up.... Eventually when healed or mostly healed, iodine might be reintroduced and see how it goes. I don't know of any other skin conditions that work this way, although an iodine...

    ARCHIVED Eggs?

Eggs make me sick and whenever I've unknowingly eaten them, I've gotten sick. I don't think they're like dairy, where some celiacs can go back to dairy once they've healed. Egg intolerances and allergies seem permanent. That's not to say it'll be your experience though.
  19. I wouldn't trust any amount of cleaning. Anything with nooks, crannies, or crevices can hold gluten and it's a sticky molecule that's hard to remove. If it's plastic, I don't know if it's even possible to clean it well enough. Cutting boards need to be replaced! All those scratches will hold gluten. Same with wooden spoons, nonstick cookware that's scratched...
  20. You absolutely could be more sensitive. I found that to be my case, too. Now that im gluten-free (3+ months now) and having SO much relief, i can see the "classic" celiac reactions i get from gluten. And I'd bet that barley malt is the culprit. If you could get your own blender pitcher for the same blender you'd save some counter space and some misery.
  21. It sounds like you might benefit from a lot more fat. Coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil... Will be filling and help with your energy deficit. Can you do rice protein powder? Hemp protein? You really need to get more protein. I'm vegan and I have to say after reading this and your other post that it might be time to make friends with a rescue group and...
  22. Btw I use Method dye and scent free laundry soap. It's been safe for me so far. I've NEVER been able to use any tide, even pre-gluten-free. I've also tried the Seventh Gen baby laundry soap, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't as itch-free as Method so I didn't even finish the bottle. I'm too attached to not itching to risk it. Lol.
  23. I vote waiting it out. As long as you're not having bloody or tarry stools and going fewer than a dozen times a day, and you're correlating your troubles with gluten exposure more often than not, odds are good you've got plain old celiac and you'll heal up over time and become more normal. Out of pocket costs, plus traumatic procedure, plus a family history...
  24. Not an idiot!! You're a sleuth for figuring it out!! I've done the same thing, too. Not just with gluten bath products, but with a gluten-free but seaweed-containing shampoo. Within a few hours, i had tons of angry red blisters everywhere the shampoo flows when I rinsed. The iodine was the culprit. It makes me so grouchy that most resources say a skin...
  25. My dad used to be a prison guard and there weren't any special diet accommodations. Diabetics were expected to work with what was given (don't eat the dessert unless you want to go to the ER, which they did often)... Then a college classmate was a women's prison guard and they had a salad bar and a very carb heavy hot lunch. They purposely fed the women lots...
