I've read that the soaker pads placed beneath meat in grocery stores are often corn-based, as is some toilet paper. So, you do have to investigate practically everything you purchase for corn-based ingredients.

ARCHIVED Need Help For A Friend
organicmama replied to Chrissyb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Be careful with the pretzels. All of those have soy. There is only one GFSF pretzel I know off, the Wylde brand I believe. -
ARCHIVED New Gluten Free Flour
organicmama replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Any idea what to sub for the buttermilk powder to make the Pamela's mix blend dairy free? I'd prefer to use regular ingredients rather than a processed product I'd have to specially purchase. -
ARCHIVED Advice Needed For Almost 5 Year Old
organicmama replied to thegirlsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is discussed all the time at groups.yahoo.com/foodlab. Urinary issues related to food are apparently very common from what I've read on the forum. The group was created to exchange information about allergies and sensitivities. I would suggest you ask the group there, as they are extremely knowledgeable. Many of them did potty training from infancy... -
ARCHIVED Best Introductory Books
organicmama replied to organicmama's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks! Any other recommendations, especially on gluten sensitivity, what gluten is, gluten free eating, etc.? -
I have some relatives that are interested in trying out the gluten free diet to see if it resolves some of their health issues. What books do you suggest for learning about what gluten is and how to eat gluten free? The simpler the better for now, until they get their feet wet.

ARCHIVED Whiskey, Vodka, Gin?
organicmama replied to organicmama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I only spent another five or ten minutes looking at that book before I was offended at the misinformation. The typos were bad enough, but telling people that rice can be dangerous? There were a whole handful of things in that arena that I dismissed immediately and don't even recall now. Plus, the classic fallacies like caramel color having gluten were mentioned... -
I want to love quinoa. I really do. I love the idea of a high protein grain and something different than the norm. I have a wide palate typically and dint hesitate to buy 10 lbs of good quality organic quinoa when it went on sale. However, I just haven't found a way to like it yet. I tried a breakfast recipe, cooked in broth (not too bad), and then toasted...

ARCHIVED No Support From Family
organicmama replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
To be honest, I'm surprised that you attended without discussing it in advance with your sister. I would not assume there would be options for me anywhere. I think it would have been reasonable to contact her in advance and at least ask what the menu was. A lot of people don't have your dietary needs at the front of their minds because you are responsible... -
ARCHIVED Do I Need A Colonoscopy?
organicmama replied to WinterSong's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree to put off. Docs give advice - suggestions. It is up to you whether you want to move forward. -
ARCHIVED Whiskey, Vodka, Gin?
organicmama posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am perusing "The Gluten-Free Bible" and it indicates that a gluten-free person cannot have "alcoholic beverages made from cereal grains such as whiskey, vodka, gin ..." Is that accurate? -
ARCHIVED Still Fatigued
organicmama replied to gigifree's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Chronic fatigue was my primary symptom. It took 3.5 months and I woke up one day feeling normal again. That was about a month after I removed soy and egg, along with being Gluten-free Casein-free. Neuro symptoms often take longer to resolve than GI symptoms. -
ARCHIVED When To Trial Other Food Intolerances?
organicmama posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I became Gluten-free Casein-free after getting positive IgG bloodwork back in May. I followed that up with IgA testing from Enterolab that confirmed positives for gluten and casein, and also showed positives for egg and soy. My primary symptoms are chronic fatigue, random body pains, brain fog, and memory issues. After 3 months eliminating gluten and casein... -
I like glutenfreeonashoestring.com, gingerlemongirl.com, and glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com. You can always find tons more once you start reading comments in those places too.

ARCHIVED Direct Link To Mobile Site?
organicmama replied to organicmama's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Does anyone know about the plugin or how to make the site recognize a mobile phone? This is the only website where I am not recognized as mobile and it is extremely cumbersome to read. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Restaurants In Jacksonville?
organicmama replied to Ash8324's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Are you sure it's Udi's? I was told their bread was made by the local gluten-free bakery, The Cookie Momsters. They also have gluten-free vegan desserts, appetizers, and entrees from Shakti Life. The flax crackers with "cheeze" were surprisingly good. Other places with gluten-free fare not mentioned - Maggiano's will create any entree for you with gluten... -
ARCHIVED 18 Weeks Pregnant B-12 Very Low
organicmama replied to Lindsay630's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You can get a prescription and inject the b12 yourself or have your partner do it. It goes in the arm or bottom and is super cheap (free on our not so great HMO). I have been doing it for years. There's no reason to have to go to a doctor for that. I personally don't see the need for a high risk OB, although I do think you need a new OB period that has... -
ARCHIVED Vietnamese Spring Roll Wrappers - Gluten Free!
organicmama replied to lucia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Where are these sold besides the Asian store, and in what section? I'm scared to go to the Asian store anymore for my flours after seeing others talk about their lead levels rising after eating products there. -
ARCHIVED Creamy Dressing?
organicmama replied to Hungrylady's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you want to do a mayonnaise based dressing and don't want to make the mayo, you can get Earth's Balance Mindful Mayo or Follow Your Heart Vegenaise. Both are gluten, egg, and dairy free. Some varieties are even soy free. -
ARCHIVED Better Batter Flour
organicmama replied to zus888's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would avoid the extra flour and just chill the dough first. That makes even gluten cookies thicker. They don't spread as well if you use refrigerated dough immediately. -
ARCHIVED Direct Link To Mobile Site?
organicmama replied to organicmama's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
No, no plugin installed. It just always worked before the upgrade and most mobile sites still do. Is there a link to something I should install? -
Is there a way to directly get to the mobile site for these forums? I upgraded the operating system on my smartphone, and now it no longer recognizes my browser as a mobile one. It worked great before that, with the mobile site being so easy to navigate. It is so cumbersome to try to see the full site on a tiny screen. I tried m.celiac.com, but to no avail...

ARCHIVED Better Batter Flour
organicmama replied to zus888's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Suzanna, did you chill the dough? With gluten-free flour cookies, it is not uncommon to chill before baking I there are any issues with thinness. Also, what was the reason for adding the extra flOur? Better Batter most often requires added liquid for correction, if anything. -
ARCHIVED Easy Foods To Find

So many newly diagnosed people should be dairy free that I would primarily list items without dairy myself. -
