  1. I certainly don't want to cause alarm here, but I just want to let you know of my personal experience. I do not lick envelopes. I know what they say about the glue being ade from corn, and it's gluten-free, etc, but why take chances if there are old envelopes out there that might not be gluten-free. How am I supposed to know if EVERY envelope is safe....
  2. They would not necessarily tell you if you had more than one copy. They would only be required to tell you if you were positive for the gene or not. It would be a good idea for your parents to be tested, regardless of if there are two copies of the gene, or if they have symptoms. But I do understand about them not being easy about getting tested. My husband...
  3. It can come from either parent or from both if you have two copies or one of each. My daughter and I both have one copy of DQ2. My boys don't have either but are still gluten intolerant. They both have DQ3, subtype 7. DQ3, subtype 8 is the one referred to as DQ8. I am still wondering if they have missed the fact that other subtypes of DQ3 can cause...
  4. I have the DH mainly on my scalp. This is the first place it occured and was there off and on for years. I would occasionally get a few spots on my arms. When I was doing the gluten challenge for the intestinal biopsy (after being gluten free) I got it really bad on my palms. It was horrible. This was the best photo I have seen of it on the palm, and...
  5. I bought some of the Pampered Chef Toaster Bags to use when we went on vacation this past December. They worked good as far as toasting the bread, and I was glad to not have to haul our gluten-free toaster along with us! It is a huge 4 slot thing that works great for us at home, but would have been a pain to bring. My only complaint with the bags was that...
  6. I'm sure you've checked the labels, and I haven't in a while. I know that there are some canola oil margarines, but I think they either had either soy bean oil or casein in them (or both!). I am allergic to soy, but can still have soy bean oil and lecithin, so I use Nucoa (it is 100% non-dairy). It does contain soy though. I remember that I was frustrated...
  7. I use the graham cracker crumbs from Kinnikinnick. I used them in the peanut butter recipe that you are talking about and they worked great. They taste very much like regular graham cracker crumbs, but the actual graham style cookies they sell are very fragile and don't look at all like the regular cookies my kids used to eat. I find it easier to just...
  8. Thank you both. You have given me some things to think about. I will look at the links asap. I agree that I might not want to use the probiotics long term, and will look into the Bifidobacterium Bifidum instead of acidophilus. The probiotic that I have is only 20% acidophilus, but doesn't have any of that unless Bifidobacterium Bifidum is also known as...
  9. I order online from : Kinnikinnick-for breads, pizza crust, donuts and muffins. Shipping is a flat rate of $10.00. I buy in bulk and stock my freezer, as well as share the order with a friend who has a child on the gluten-free diet. This cuts my shipping costs dramatically. You also earn g-points with each order that you can cash in for credit on your...
  10. Paul, thank you for the information. I have been taking Jarro-Dophilus +FOS probiotic supplement for the past 4-5 days. It says that it contains 3.36 billion organisms per capsule. It says to take 1-3 tablets once a day. I've been taking 3 each evening about an hour after dinner. I am extremely limited on my supplements here in town, and I only get...
  11. I buy mine at our local Save Mart. Most grocery stores should carry it. It comes in tubs and boxes.
  12. I have never heard of the gluten-free diet being the cause of yellow teeth. I have heard of celiac being linked to dental enamel defects. All 4 of us in my family that are gluten-free have "bad" teeth. Mine have been yellow since my permanent teeth came in, and my two older boys both have yellow permanent teeth. We will see with my daughter. She has...
  13. I can't bake a good gluten-free yeast bread to save my life! I can make quick breads, cakes, brownies, cookies (all different kinds) and other goodies, but not regualr yeast bread. I use Kinnikinnick breads. Their white sandwich bread, and the sunflower flax are what we use most often. Makes great sandwiches, french toast and toast. I also have in stock...
  14. I recently noticed an advertisement for a gluten-free restaurant in Davis, CA in the Living Without magazine. Not everything in their restaurant is gluten-free (but most are, and they have gluten-free alternatives available), and of course it wouldn't be the same as a cafe combined with a bakery, but you could check out their site and get some ideas. They...

    ARCHIVED Obesity

Pixiegirl, Actually, I think what was said is that while your intestine is damaged, your body is malnourished and that is when it enters starvation mode and stockpiles all the fat. Once the diet is started and you start to heal, some are finally able to loose weight. Others gain more, since they don't compensate for the higher calorie count of gluten-free...

    ARCHIVED Obesity

I am now down to 160! I have been here for a few months, but as long as I can maintain it, then I'm fine with that. I still would like to lose another 25 -30 lbs. I know I can do it. The weight comes off easier in the summer, so I figure if I can maintain throughout the winter and lose every summer, then within two years I will be down to my ideal weight...
  17. I use Nucoa brand margarine. It is one of the only ones that is completely dairy free, as well as gluten-free.
  18. If you live in this area, you haven't missed it yet. Sorry that it took so long to get it pinned. It seems to have slipped through the cracks.
  19. Thanks Paul, Actually since I posted yesterday I realised that I forgot to mention that I recently (Nov-Dec) had taken a LOT of antibiotics. First for a bladder infection and then two weeks later I started a course for an absess, and then 5 days into it had to switch to a combo of Bactrim/Tetracycline because the culture showed that the absess was caused...
  20. I've been told repeatedly by doctors, and others who are knowledgable about this, that if you completely eliminate the problem food for at least 8 months, that the antibodies will leave your system and if the intolerance was caused by damage from the gluten, that you should be able to reintroduce the offending food. If the intolerance is a separate thing...
  21. I was breastfed as an infant and I have had symptoms since I was 4, and possible before that. I also breastfed all three of my children, and they all developed symptoms early on. I do know one thing though, all four of us have what I would consider to be a mild form of the disease. Although we have symptoms, we do not have a terrible amount of damage...
  22. I highly recommend not cheating. I used to get low back pain a lot, but since going gluten free I don't get it very often. Sometimes during my menstrual cycle I do get sore, but I just figure it is from the cramping. I think when you are having symptoms from consuming gluten it could be that your intestines are irritated enough to cause some discomfort...
  23. You could certainly get a bad reaction from a whole piece of pasta, considering that cross-contamination (for example, stirring wheat pasta and then stirring gluten-free pasta with the same spoon) could cause a reation in most celiacs. Whole Foods most commonly sold gluten-free bread is Food for Life brand. They also make a lot of gluten based breads...
  24. That's right, anything with dairy contains casein, and many "non-dairy" products also contain casein. You have to read the labels. Sodium caseinate (or any caseinate) is a derivative of casein. Whey is another milk protein, but it contains casein in it as well. So if you need to avoid casein, then you basically have to avoid all dairy products and any...
  25. We use San-J Organic Tamari Wheat Free Soy Sauce here at my house. It is gluten free. I don't use it myself very often because I am allergic to soy and have to follow my meal with Benadryl if I choose to have some, but my kids love it. My husband is the only one in the family who is not gluten-free and he keeps stealing my San-J brand because it tastes...
