ARCHIVED Dealing With The Holidays--Help Please!
AVR1962 replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am planning to make my own little meal and take it with me. Maybe I'll even make a gluten-free dessert for everyone to share. But I am not taking chances in someone else's kitchen. Unless they too are gluten-free, people do not understand how to avoid gluten CC in the kitchen. -
Love it and know exactly what you mean. My husband was AF 27 years. We did have to depend on Army medical a couple times depending where we were stationed and I totally agree but I can't say AF is that much better unfortuantely! I am seen at Landstuhl, one of the biggest hospitals in Europe, and I find I get better care on the economy. The system is whacked...

It is a lot of work at first but it does get easier. You find something that is safe, something you like and you stick with it. The gluten-free stuff is a hit or miss thing. Some of it is good and others not so much. I like to bake and make my own stuff with the flour I prefer but I live in Germany and I am using a gluten-free German brand that I doubt is...

There could be a few reasons for itching. Look up https://www.celiac.com/articles/22021/1/Five-Common-Skin-Conditions-Associated-With-Celiac-Disease/Page1.html Twitches are more than likely due to the lack of magnesium in yoiur diet. Potassium and magnesium both regulate muscle contraction. Some people have trouble with magnesium supplements but are fine...

ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity?
AVR1962 replied to hojo70's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, nerve issues a very much a part of it. This is what first appeared to me as bothersome symptoms. It doesn't hurt to retest. If tests are still negative then maybe try a gluten-free diet anyway. I had to do alot of supplementing. My body was pretty damaged, so the point of bone loss and I was not absorbing the proper nutrients from foods alone. I have... -
ARCHIVED Glutened-Ooww
AVR1962 replied to sariesue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No fun! Sorry to hear!! I use activated charcoal as soon as I think I may have gotten something or feel the effects. I take 6 instead of 2. It does help but it is no cure. Bad thing is it absorbs randomly in the system so it takes the nutrients in the food as well. I definately would not using it on any regular basis. -
ARCHIVED No More Wine For Me.
AVR1962 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Same here, alcohol has become a real issue. Feels like it is going directly to my veins like I have no tolerance for it. It makes my Ataxia worse. I had some champagne with crab legs the other night, something I have not had in months, an old favorite. Not good! I was so dizzy the next day. It wasn't a dizzy from gluten, almost like I was drunk but I wasn... -
ARCHIVED Barley, Wheat And Oat Leaves?
AVR1962 replied to PAT52's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wouldn't take the chance. I was taking a real good vit supplement with wheat grass in it and I asked myself the same question but figured there were lots of other vitamins out there that didn't run the risk. -
ARCHIVED Could Not Believe What I Was Hearing!
AVR1962 replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yet another thing we have to sometimes for-go when we are out because we don't know what is in it. It is very frustrating! I am just now getting where I can have little bits of dairy and am shocked to read labels and see what all we cannot eat that is in it. If it's not vanilla, I don't bother. It's too risky. I think the world is catching on though and all... -
ARCHIVED Could Not Believe What I Was Hearing!
AVR1962 replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is certainly frustrating. I would be tempting and disapointing to see fried listed as gluten-free to learn that they are cooked in oil breded items are cooked. Good thing, is that you asked! I don't eat fries out at all. I used to work many years ago as a back-up cook and did all the fried foods. Fries could easy pick up breading from a previously fried... -
ARCHIVED It's Been A Horrible Day- Can Anyone Help?
AVR1962 replied to suziq0805's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is there anyway you could see another doc and get the testing done? Seems like ashame to come so far and not carry thru with the testing at this point, especially while you do have insurance. Sorry to hear about your husband's job. -
ARCHIVED Reaction To Coconut Milk
AVR1962 replied to Fairy Dancer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Could be the xantham gum which is in some gluten-free products and doesn't set well on my stomach either. -
ARCHIVED New Here...considering Diagnostics
AVR1962 replied to LuvQuints's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you want to be tested for celiac you will have to be on gluten for at least 2 months, some docs want 3. Testing is not very reliable so while it is possible for you to have celiac your tests may not prove that. If you are feeling better on a gluten-free diet I would definately make mention of this to your doc. -
More than likely you are vitamin deficient. The body has to ahve the correct balance of vitamins or insomnia will result. More than likely it is magnesium that you need but make sure you have enough B12, calcium, d, and iron.

ARCHIVED Fat Malabsorbtion
AVR1962 replied to thegirlsmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did they run and tests for your gallbladder? If the gallbladder is failing a person will have trouble with fats and meat. A family member had theirs removed for this reason. However, when the villa in the intestines is effected by gluten one of the problems that can occur besides a dairy intolerance is a fat malabsortion. Once the villa mend this should not... -
ARCHIVED Horrible Fatigue And Other Problems
AVR1962 replied to Austin Guy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Great that you found the culprit! Let me get some clarity on this, if I could? Is this in connection to the thyroid and what helped the thyroid to function properly? I am under the assumption that you do not take meds for the thyroid and have not been dx with thyroid issues. The reason I ask is I am on meds to shrink a growth on the thyroid and I actually... -
Actually, I am a firm believer in protein shakes. I used to bodybuild and as a female it is very hard to gain muscle from a regualr diet. The added protein will aslo help repair your body, and I hope it does give you the added energy you need. Look at your ingredients list. I don't know if you can only avoid gluten, but whey is fine as long as you are not...

ARCHIVED The Day After I Graduate Culinary School I Have To Go Gluten Free :(
AVR1962 replied to Applegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow really! All though it might seem like one door is closing, this might actually be opening the door for something else for you. It's okay to let go of a dream and only natural to grief that loss. On the other hand, great that you now know what caused the sores in your mouth. My heart went out to you when I read your post and saw your pictures. Sometimes... -
ARCHIVED Can I Trust A Gluten-Free Meal From American Airlines?
AVR1962 replied to lucia's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I flew American this past July and ordered a gluten-free ahead of time and had no issues with it. It did have alot of dairy which I was not eating at the time so I still ended up limited. Thank goodness for the snacks I brought! -

Sorry to hear you have had such a hard time getting the help you need from professionals. Not uncommon though, I went thru the same....tests and more tests with no results. I was so sick and wasn't getting any help so I finally started experimenting on my own, reading and trying to figure things out for myself like it sounds like you are doing now. I think...

ARCHIVED Purposely Glutened
AVR1962 replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it did not give me the symptoms I have, I would probably cheat. One crumb of bread can make me dizzy (among other symptoms) for 3+ weeks. I cannot even imagine what a full donut might do to me. So no, my goal is to have gluten never again and I am really really trying to make it that way. -
ARCHIVED Do I Have The Symptoms For Celiac
AVR1962 replied to PamS's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could go off gluten as an experiment to see if it makes a difference. This is what I did, and in 3 weeks I knew. I then went off dairy and found it too was giving me issues. So definatley no harm done by going off and just seeing what happens. If you decide to test, or doc wants you to test, you will have to be on gluten....docs vary on time, mine... -
ARCHIVED Going Back To Eating Gluten For My Endoscopy?
AVR1962 replied to CourtneyLee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you decide to do this, my suggestion is to go back to your doc if you get too sick to continue on glutens and have this documented. I last 12 days, I was so incredibly sick. By not being able to make it to my testing it helped me to get my diagnosis.
