ARCHIVED Help! A Sick Celiac!
sspitzer5 replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's possible to get cross contamination at Chipolte. At the one near me, they touch the flour tortillas and then touch the bowls (ask them to change gloves before making the bowl). They also use their hands for cheese and lettuce, which may have touched the tortillas. I really like Chipolte and eat there fairly often. But, I have found that the spices... -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Opinion?
sspitzer5 replied to e&j0304's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting question! I've wondered about this too. Before I found out about being gluten intolerant, I had lots of fatigue, headaches, another autoimmune problem, but I never had any GI symptoms. I went on a pretty strict low carb diet for a couple of years. Of course, I wasn't gluten free, but I had cut down on gluten greatly due to the diet. When I later... -
ARCHIVED Suggestions Needed For Next Step...
sspitzer5 replied to tummytroubles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sadly, the standard medical tests likely won't help in your case because you've already been gluten free for so long. To get the right results, you would have to reintroduce gluten for some period of time and then get tested. I haven't been willing to do this because I know I would be miserable. There are a lot of us in this boat. The other option would... -
ARCHIVED San Francisco South Bay Area Dining
sspitzer5 replied to jillwilli's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
PF Changs has a gluten-free menu (there's one in Sunnyvale and Palo Alto). Maggiano's usually has gluten-free pasta on hand although no formal gluten-free menu. S -
ARCHIVED Do Any Biopsy-positive Celiacs Get Offended When Someone With
sspitzer5 replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good question! I tested positive through Enterolab, had a very positive dietary response, and have lots of related issues like osteopenia and another autoimmune disease. I had my biopsy after 5 months on the gluten-free diet and it was inconclusive (duh). My doctor said he thought it was Celiac even though the biopsy was inconclusive. However, I find... -
ARCHIVED Naturopathic Doctors And Hypothyroid
sspitzer5 replied to Ksmith's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm pretty sure you need to be an MD to prescribe Armour. There are some naturopaths that are also MDs and they are usually more open to Armour. S -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Nodules And Possible Cancer.
sspitzer5 replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, it's worth checking. Getting a second opinion from an experienced endo is a must. Speaking from the view of someone with a thyroid problem, getting rid of it could create huge problems for your system. I would see that as an absolute last resort. S -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Nodules And Possible Cancer.
sspitzer5 replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you been diagnosed with Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid condition)? Nodules are common with Hashimoto's. I would definitely see an endocrinologist. S -
You might want to give melatonin a try. You can pick it up in any health food store. I'm trying time relased now as it helps me stay asleep. S

Thanks for the info! I travel to Phoenix fairly often, so this is useful. Of course, all I want to eat when I go is Picazzo's Pizza. It's awesome. Susan

ARCHIVED How Long After Being Gluten Free Did Your Sleep Improve
sspitzer5 replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm 1.5 years gluten-free and my sleep has improved, but not dramatically. My main problem is staying asleep. I've recently started taking time realeased melatonin and it's helping a lot. S -
ARCHIVED Is There Greater Sensitivity To Gluten After Starting G/f Diet?
sspitzer5 replied to Susan M-G's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
YES, I'm much more sensitive to it now than before being gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED What To Expect For Colonoscopy..
sspitzer5 replied to breann6's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Breann, I just had my first colonoscopy about a month ago. I drank the big gallon jug o'stuff. I hated that part. It was really hard to keep drinking it. It had a lime flavor which was ok at first but got pretty yucky after drinking a ton of it. The procedure is the easy part. I was out the whole time. S -
ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes
sspitzer5 replied to Anne AMP's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free for 1.5 years and just started taking digestive enzymes a few months ago. They do seem to help me. I read a book called "Micro Miracles" by Ellen Cutler. She says to only take the plant based/vegetarian enzymes because they can survice the acidity of the stomach (or something like that). I'm taking Digest Gold by Enzymedica. The... -
ARCHIVED Optimum Health Resources
sspitzer5 replied to KrisT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used them for food intolerance testing (IGG). For me, the results seemed accurate, but I've heard others here say that there were a lot of false positives. Their customer service is not great at the moment and it takes a long time to get the results back. If you're looking for gluten intolerance testing, I think Enterolab is a better choice. S -
Appropo or appro-"poo"? So, while we're on this topic, has anyone had solid poos that are super long, but not the thin ones? They look pretty "normal" to me, but there's just more of it than there ever has been. What's up with that? One doc says it's a good thing and the other said it could be malabsorbtion. S

ARCHIVED Optimum Health Resources Lab
sspitzer5 replied to sagemoon's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes! I had the same problem. It took forever to get my results back. I had to call multiple times. I was eventually told that they lost my batch, but they did finally find it and send the results to me. I found the test results very helpful though. I didn't get many positives and the things that were positive seem to really have been problems. S -
ARCHIVED Igg Testing For Food Intolerances
sspitzer5 replied to covsooze's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I did food intolerance testing through York. Only a few things came up and it seems pretty accurate for me. What I've heard is that if you haven't been gluten free for very long, your system is pretty out of whack and will react to many things. My doctor said to wait 6 months after being gluten-free before doing the test to avoid false positives. S -
ARCHIVED Almond Intolerance
sspitzer5 replied to NoahBunny's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had a food intolerance test dones (igg testing) and it showed a big reaction to almonds. I never would have guessed that they were causing a problem, but once I got rid of them, things have certainly been better. No more almonds for me. Check labels for almond meal/flour, etc. It seems like almonds are in a fair amount of gluten free stuff. S -
ARCHIVED My Vegas Trip Did Not Go Very Well
sspitzer5 replied to j9n's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I was in Las Vegas for a conference last week. Most of the real restaurants at the Venetian (not snack/sandwich places) were great and didn't have a problem modifying food for me. They had experience with Celiacs before. Smith and Wolinsky was good too. But, as usual, the more you pay for dinner, the less likely you are to get gluten. S -
ARCHIVED Teeth Grinding
sspitzer5 replied to momothree's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My doctor told me that teeth grinding is associated with food intolerances. I haven't had any other doctors mention this though. S -
I can't hurt to rule out Lyme. I've been tested, but that was a long time ago. I did live in Connecticut for 8 years, yeah, the home of Lyme disease! But, I'm pretty sure my illnesses started before the move. S
-
Have you heard of any cases where Hashimoto's thyroiditis was actually misdiagnosed Lyme disease? My thyroid antibodies are very high and my TSH was too high when I was diagnosed. S
-
For me I think it was a divorce, moving across the country and starting a new job all at the same time. I started having digestive symtoms about that time, although I had already been diagnosed with another autoimmune disease 6 years prior to all that. S

ARCHIVED Amy's Has Changed Thier Labeling
sspitzer5 replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I noticed this label change last week too. I was also hoping that they would produce more stuff in dedicated facilities, maybe they will in time. I am appreciative of their labeling approach though. At least we know we can't eat it. I'm curious whether there is a market for foods made without gluten ingredients but with possible cross contamination....
