ARCHIVED Spelt?
sspitzer5 replied to Lollie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, it's not okay. Spelt has gluten. -
Yes, that definitely is offensive. I felt so much better after switching to a gluten free shampoo. I have no idea whether it was somehow getting into my mouth or being absorbed through the skin. The least they could say is that they don't know for sure and that if you're still having symptoms to give it a try. S

I eat there fairly often and have had pretty good luck. I don't get sauce or onions and, obviously, no bun (and no cheese either because of the dairy). However, there is definitely some cross contamination in the way that the burgers are made. The same person who handles the buns also touches the lettuce that is used for the lettuce wrapped burgers. My boyfriend...

ARCHIVED Temprature
sspitzer5 replied to Lister's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your temperature is consistently low, it could be a thyroid problem. Also if you are intolerant to cold and have cold hands and feet, it might be thyroid related. -
Sorry to hear that you are sick! I know how that goes. As far as Bonefish goes, the main issue seems to be that they don't train their employees on the gluten free menu and how to prepare the food properly. The staff seems to have no clue that they even have the menu. P.F. Changs seems to do a much better job with education on the issue. The...

ARCHIVED Lifestream Waffles
sspitzer5 replied to Chrisser's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been wondering about the blueberry buckwheat waffles. I was getting gluten for a while and couldn't figure out why, so I eliminated all of the newest stuff in my diet, including the waffles. I don't know if it was the waffles or not, but I don't seem to be getting it now. -
ARCHIVED Why Is One Crumb Too Much?
sspitzer5 replied to azmom3's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Speaking of transit times, a nutritionist told me to swallow some whole kernel corn and then watch for it on the other end (if ya know what I mean). That gives you a good idea of how long it takes to digest that meal. However, the reaction caused by the gluten seems to go on for much longer than it takes to eliminate the meal. I usually feel sick for ... -
I've had some issues with Chipotle, which I think are from cross contamination. At the store I go to, they touch the cheese and lettuce with their hands, so I don't get that. The only cc I can see with the borrito bol is that sometimes multiple people move my bol through the process and they haven't all changed their gloves. Thus, sometimes tortilla fingers...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else Have Trouble With gluten-free Breads?
sspitzer5 replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a problem with gluten-free breads because of an egg allergy. Many of the breads have eggs, although not all. Maybe there's another allergy involved. S -
I get these bigger bumps too. They're red and sore and more like a little cyst. I don't think I have a rash, however, my scalp is itchy. Weird thing is it got a lot worse when I switched to Dove shampoo and conditioner, which I thought were gluten free??? S

ARCHIVED Trying To Figure Out My Sleep Problem
sspitzer5 replied to covsooze's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Susie, The same thing happens to me with sleep. I wake up so many times and I don't have to pee, so I don't think that's it for me. It's usually happens between 2 am and 6 am. Drives me nuts. Would love to have an answer for this. One doc said it was my adrenals being stressed and weak. S -
ARCHIVED Headaches
sspitzer5 replied to sclark9602's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Gluten gives me major headaches, so I'm also voting for the cross contamination theory. -
Hi, If you are frustrated with the limited search capabilities of this board (like me), you can search it using Google instead. Go to the Open Original Shared Link and enter the phrase you want to search for in the box followed by: site:www.glutenfreeforum.com. For example, to search for anything containing the words "Heinz tomato juice", enter the following...

ARCHIVED Bacon
sspitzer5 replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Check the ingredients. I've seen several cheap bacons that are cured in soy sauce. -
ARCHIVED Frustrated And Feeling Dumb
sspitzer5 replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree. It stinks. I usually deal with it pretty well (after 1.5 years), but I definitely have times when I am whiny and feeling sorry for myself. I think that's ok, it's not an easy thing to deal with. Only people who have had to do it know how hard it is and not just from a food perspective but also in the form of social isolation and a fear of getting... -
ARCHIVED Nut Thins
sspitzer5 replied to Daxin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been wondering about these too. They taste GREAT and I was eating them a lot for about a month. However, I felt awful the whole time and was definitely getting gluten somehow. I can't say for sure that it was the nut thins, but they are a likely candidate. I've stopped eating them and am finally starting to feel better. Susan -
Me too. I wish I could figure it out. Seems like there are times I feel fine and times that I don't. It's hard to tell if it's my thyroid or the Celiac or what. I do think that your thyroid levels can fluctuate when you have Hashimoto's and the blood tests might not detect it because they are only done once in a while. My doctor lets me adjust my own meds...

Hi Steve, I have Hasimoto's low thyroid and my throat feels weird. Hard to describe but tight and sometimes hard to breathe. It's worse when my thyroid levels aren't regulated. Have you have you blood tests done recently? You might need to increase your prescription. Susan

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Migraines
sspitzer5 replied to GlutenWrangler's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Brian, I haven't had migraines, but I get headaches pretty much everyday. Initially they were better on a gluten free diet, but then they got worse again (and I'm sure it isn't a contamination thing). I'm trying to rule out other food intolerances now. It's a pain, but I'd do practically anything to get rid of the headaches. Urg! Susan -
TSH, Free T4, Free T3, maybe thyroid antibody levels (to check for an autoimmune problem). Your primary care doc should at least be willing to run a TSH. You may need a doctor who is more open to run some of the other tests. I'd look for another endo. But, kind in mind that, like Celiac, you might have normal test results and still have a problem. It's important...

Hi Monica, I have Hashimotos. Sounds like you have many of the symptoms. I'd definitely get the blood tests done for it. For great info, see Open Original Shared Link. Susan

ARCHIVED Fat Intolerance
sspitzer5 replied to emcmaster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I seem to have problems with olive oil too. Fried foods seem ok though. I was thinking that I might have an intolerance to olives but my doc didn't think so. She said that fats are more complex to digest, so maybe my intestines are still damaged and can't break it down??? -
ARCHIVED Oops- Japanese Food = Wheat
sspitzer5 replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hi, I've read that the sesame seeds on the sushi rice might contain spices that have gluten. Do you know if Whole Foods using plain sesame seeds? -
ARCHIVED I Can't Sleep!
sspitzer5 replied to lightningfoot speakin words's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have a lot of trouble sleeping if I get gluten. I toss and turn all night and sort of half sleep, then feel horrible the next day. Susan -
ARCHIVED Craisins Trail Mixes
sspitzer5 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I picked up a bag of Craisins Trail Mix today and was happy because the ingredients looked to be gluten free. I ate a few bites and decided to look them up on the internet just in case. I was bummed by what I saw. Do Ocean Spray® products contain gluten? The protein gluten found in certain grains (wheat, barley, rye and oats or hybrids of these) is ...
