ARCHIVED New York Pizza Restaurant
sspitzer5 replied to watkinson's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Ditto! I've been there twice and it was so great. The gluten free menu has almost everything that the regular menu has and they don't treat you like you're weird. The waitress even said, "I know, I'll box yours separately and make sure that it doesn't come in contact with theirs." She was boxing my leftovers and my parents' (which is regular pizza). I felt... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease And Other Food Intolerances?
sspitzer5 replied to ebrbetty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are the food intolerance tests reliable? I really need to have this done. Anyone have luck with specific labs? Thanks! Susan -
ARCHIVED Wheat In Face Creams
sspitzer5 replied to CMCM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was having a reaction from the soap I used in the shower (and washed my face with). My primary symptom was headaches. They seem to be getting better now that I switched to one without wheat. I think I was getting it in my eyes when I put my contacts on. Anyway, I'm really careful with lotions, cosmetics, etc. now. Just in case, I never put any lotion on... -
ARCHIVED Most Annoying Comments/questions
sspitzer5 replied to carriecraig's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The most annoying comment came from my friend's husband. We were out having dinner and I was very specific with the waitress, told her they need to clean the grill, etc. After that, my friend's husband says to me, "If you keep this up, you're going to make yourself depressed." His was trying to tell me that I was taking it to an extreme that would ultimately... -
That's funny! The one I go to usually only has one or two people behind the counter. I get the burrito bowls and I haven't gotten sick from eating there. I think it's a great place. The cheese seems to be the only thing they touch with their gloves.

ARCHIVED Help! Weight Gain On gluten-free Diet
sspitzer5 replied to MegGFBoston's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Me too! Have gained about 10 pounds on the diet. I ditto what everyone has said. I think of it as "rebound eating" ... can't eat any pasta, no problem, I'll eat some gluten free brownies. It sucks because I feel like I'm starving half the time because I travel a lot and it's hard to find stuff to eat. So I'm hungry but I've gained weight. Very annoying.... -
I really like eating there, however, cross contamination can be an issue. They touch both the flour tortillas and the cheese with their gloved hands, so I figure some gluten could be getting on the cheese. I've had them change their gloves, although frequently it takes quite a bit of explanation to actually get them to do it. But, even with the new gloves...

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerence And Thyroid Problems
sspitzer5 replied to tiffjake's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yep, me too. Hashimoto's. I found out about that first and then spent the next 8 years wondering why I still felt crappy. Then I found out about the gluten thing. It's hard to deal with because some of the symptoms overlap and you don't know which thing is causing which symptom. Finally starting to feel a little better after a year gluten free. I think I... -
ARCHIVED Risotteria Gluten Free Tuesdays
sspitzer5 replied to flagbabyds's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just got back from a business trip in NYC and this was the first place I went! Amazingly, they delivered lunch to my office the next day too. It's great to have a place like this. Although, I gotta say, the pizza at Picazzo's in Phoenix is way better. Susan -
ARCHIVED Picazzo's Gluten Free Pizza
sspitzer5 replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I was just in Phoenix for a meeting and tried Picazzo's. It was AMAZINGLY GREAT! I thought I would never eat pizza that good again. Gonna have to write them a thank you letter. Susan -
ARCHIVED Americans With Disabilities Act
sspitzer5 replied to Mykare's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Richard, you make good points. But let’s take it one step at a time. I have a very specific question, which is, is there any legal precedence (perhaps under the ADA) to sue for not providing safe meal options for someone who has Celiac‘s disease? Are there any lawyers on the board who can answer this? -
ARCHIVED Americans With Disabilities Act
sspitzer5 replied to Mykare's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the reply. I agree that most chefs are willing to help. Whenever I eat at upscale restaurants, I don't have a problem. Several chefs have come out to talk to me and have made me great meals. My problem is more with chain type restaurants where there aren't experienced chefs preparing the food. And, I agree, it's an education thing more than... -
ARCHIVED Americans With Disabilities Act
sspitzer5 replied to Mykare's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is a great question! One I've been wondering about myself. However, my question is in regards to restaurants, airports, airlines and generally public services and public places of business. They have to accomodate people with handicaps right? What about us? I travel frequently for work and I am often stuck in airports and on airplanes. And, of course... -
Hi Broncobux, I thought corn starch was okay. When is it not okay? I hope I haven't been glutening myself. Susan

Make sure you stay away from imitation crab!!! Imitation crab is full of gluten. I got really sick eating California rolls early on in my gluten free diet. Susan

ARCHIVED Mysteriously Glutened By Amy's Kitchen?
sspitzer5 replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Beverly, I'm fairly certain that I've reacted to Amy's Mac & Cheese before. However, I've eaten it several times since then and haven't had a problem. So, maybe there are some cross contamination issues once in a while? Susan -
ARCHIVED Boston Market At Our Grocery Store Deli...
sspitzer5 replied to pixiegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Susan, I found this on the web ... Open Original Shared Link. Looks promising! Susan -
Yes, thanks Megan. I definitely know PF Chang's. I eat there often since there's one near my office, one near my friend's house, and one near my house. Susan

Legal Sea Foods is great! Go there if you can. I'm in Boston on business this week and have eaten there twice already and will again tonight. I'm writing them a nice thank you letter. I just wish there was one in California. Susan

ARCHIVED Did I Finally Find An Answer?
sspitzer5 replied to Claire415's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiacs certainly sounds possible to me. Definitely worth checking into. I'd also get your thyroid checked. Hypothyroidism could account for some of the things you describe too. Good luck! Susan -
ARCHIVED Arborio Rice For Risotto
sspitzer5 replied to otnemem's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I got some from a bulk bin at whole foods. That turned out to be a bad idea. Must have been contaminated because I got sick right after dinner. No more bulk bins for me. Susan -
Hi all, This is a pretty basic question ... are baking soda and baking powder gluten free or not? My boyfriend's mother bought me some cookies that look gluten free. The only thing I'm not sure about is the baking powder (or soda), can't remember which one is in it. Clearly I don't bake much. :-) Thanks, Susan

Hi celiac3270, I'd love a copy! I'm at sspitzer5@yahoo.com. Thanks! -
Hi Elonwy, I've had a reaction after eating the Amy's mac and cheese a few times. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was something else, but it did happen more than once. I hope it isn't the mac and cheese, it's yummy! Susan
