ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?

I like beans. You should like beans. Eat them with digestive enzymes at first. They may be tough in the beginning, don't get discouraged if they give you a problem. -

pricklypear1971 replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was 24, range 32-100. Wow, j take minuscule amounts compared to everyone else! I guess we'll see if it works in Dec. Still walking and it's still 92 in Tucson so no lack of sun and potential D. -
ARCHIVED Gut Healing Support
pricklypear1971 replied to meinelse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A Naturapath would probably be a good bet. Mine keeps mentioning "building the gut" and I keep on running. Would you elaborate on your hypoglycemia? I appear to be heading down that road myself, and need pointers. How were you dx'ed with hypoglycemia? I was emailing with my ND today and she kept saying liver/thyroid/gallbladder and adjusting to gluten... -
ARCHIVED A Body In Distress-Lyme/celiac
pricklypear1971 replied to Britgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's a big Lyme thread on here. I think it's at the top pf one of the sections. Search for it. Yeah - I get the one thing on top of another...it's exhausting and scary. -

ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, glad you're feeling better. Just am FYI - most people would experience quite a few pangs and craving on a smoothie diet as you describe. Cut loose a bit and actually eat dinner and breakfast. Nothing exotic - a bit of protein, a veggie, fruit... Salt and pepper and herbs are your friends. If you don't think eggs are a problem add an egg at breakfast... -
ARCHIVED Nausea That Resolves With Eating Protein
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ok, today's test... Protein rules. Grapes are ok. Strawberries are not. I am making Cuban Black Beans (Moosewood recipe) for dinner. Lots of protein, fiber, veggies. We'll see. -
ARCHIVED How To Notify Family
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, I just notified my first family member. I did it because she's scheduled for gallbladder surgery in two weeks and I thought she might be interested in knowing the link between Celiac and gallbladder problems. Holding my breath. -
ARCHIVED Dh For The First Time?
pricklypear1971 replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Okay, here's my $0.02 on steroids. No. Try an antihistamine - because you need to know if this is DH or an allergy. You can attempt to counter it with Robitissin. DH is about more than a rash. Or I should say, you need to know if it's DH so you can prevent it in the future. It can get BAD. Lets put it this way....you don't want to be in labor and... -
ARCHIVED Dh For The First Time?
pricklypear1971 replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I personally only avoid chocolate if it has milk - since cocoa isn't an issue. You can find milk-free chocolate (although i never bothered, ate Ghiradelli semi sweet chips and junior mints). Carageenan is a biggie - it's seaweed. Watch for that in ice cream, soft cheeses. Everyone is different. My rash started healing about 3 days low iodine. As long... -
ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ok. Stop smoking pot and anything else that makes you feel like you're having an allergic reaction. Try Crest toothpaste, I believe it's gluten-free. Check your shampoos, shaving stuff, etc. Suave and garnier are brands that clearly label gluten. If in doubt, google the product and chances are you'll come up with the answer. Read labels. -
ARCHIVED Dh For The First Time?
pricklypear1971 replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I'd start a low iodine diet. Yesterday. The pics aren't close up enough to see detail, but DH has a lot of variation.., Are the bumps fluid filled at all? Any oozing at all? Did you try an antihistimine? Yes, this could happen if you are exposed to gluten. In DH iga is stored in the skin - and when enough iga meets enough iodine-wham. Rash. I... -
ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually, it's an endoscopy....if it's done correctly it's very good at detecting intestinal damage. But if you are gluten intolerant, you shouldn't have intestinal damage (intolerance is a newer area of dx, so dx is fuzzy). So, sounds like your blood tests will be in plenty of time. Good for you! Lots of people here have neuro symptoms, anxiety... -
ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know where I got 3 days. Sounds like you're on day 1. All the better if you can get tested asap. Get the lab slip from your ND or MD. Run to the lab and give blood. Some ND's stock saliva tests, but I don't think that will be a full panel. -
ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
He's only been gluten-free 3 days...hence the RUN to the doctors office today. Yes, if you continue gluten-free then thetesting won't be valid. In your case, given your symptoms, I'd continue gluten-free and "everything" f and if I can get the test in the next few days, great. If not, figure it out by elimination. -
ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In all of those tests did they run a celiac panel?? If no, run to one of them and get it done today. Not just one test, the WHOLE panel. And if I was experiencing what you're experiencing (and I think I have to some degree), I'd try gluten free, EVERYTHING free to see if it helps. It took 1 week for my brain fog to lift, but at almost 4 months gluten... -
ARCHIVED Dh/allergic Rash & Fertility
pricklypear1971 replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually, it CAN hurt to lower your iodine too much, too long. But for dh testing purposes you are correct. -
ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy, But Negative Genetics?!
pricklypear1971 replied to mmm1017's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Get a copy of the genetic test and look up the reported genes. My test said negative if you read the short version - while still having a half celiac gene, plus 2 more that are suspect (meaning someone is researching them and associating them, they just aren't the most common in the west). Basically, I'm dq2 and 8 and 9 positive. Just not in full Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Help For Cramps
pricklypear1971 replied to TTNOGluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Try eliminating one of the foods, above for 3 days straight. Add it back. Did the cramping stop with withdrawal, come back when you add back? The other possibility is that you are eating a diet too high/low in some nutrient. That may cause spasms or cramping. Are you drinking enough water? Are you eating enough to not be hungry? Are you able to exercise... -
ARCHIVED Making Granola - Sub For Oats?
pricklypear1971 replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I bought some granola at Trader Joe's yesterday. They use corn puffs (half spheres) to sub for oats. Puffed corn, rice bran, raisin juice concentrate, honey, salt, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, raisins, sesame seeds, coconut, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, cranberries, pecans, apricots, brazil nuts, vanilla, maple, sea salt. Whew! Long list! -
ARCHIVED What Am I Eating?!?
pricklypear1971 replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I suggest The Sneaky Chef or the book by Jessica Seinfeld to learn how to make nutritious purees and hide them in food. You won't be able to use all of the recipes for baking, but you could benefit from the technique. -
ARCHIVED Nausea That Resolves With Eating Protein
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ha! I was trying to see if glucose would have an effect. Ya know, the obvious finally occured to me late yesterday. Was I glutened???? Maybe the drywall experience caught up with me???? I'm wondering if this is a gluten symptom for me- blood sugar going nuts???? Not a good sign, is it? I tried a lot of things yesterday - the ONLY thing that worked... -
ARCHIVED In Pain And Feeling Depressed
pricklypear1971 replied to hazesdaze's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey there. First, it can take while to "detox" from gluten. For some, a week. Others, longer. The best way to get rid of gluten is no not eat it - so no more testing. You'll probably feel better, faster if you eat whole foods - fruits, veggies, meats. Stay away from the processed foods (even gluten-free ones) for a month or so. Digestive enzymes...
