ARCHIVED Tired Of Having Frequent "colds"
pricklypear1971 replied to Rebekka's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree the whole system is a mess. In my case, the thyroid supplementation made a HUGE difference, though. In retrospect, the one thing the meds did perfectly was relieve cold/flu episodes. Gluten relieved the rest. -
ARCHIVED Tired Of Having Frequent "colds"
pricklypear1971 replied to Rebekka's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had constant colds, flu, even pneumonia before I started thyroid meds (this was years before I went gluten-free). If you haven't had your thyroid checked, and been checked for Hashimotos Thyroiditis, it would be a good idea. Hashis and Celiac patients have a lot of overlap in symptoms. You need a full thyroid panel (not just tsh), including TPO. -
ARCHIVED Crawfish, Crawdads, Crawfish
pricklypear1971 replied to CNV2855's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was under the impression the iodine came from the ocean (implying fresh water fish would be low in iodine). Crawfish are a fresh water crustacean; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they are in semi-salty water, especially in South LA. Do NOT eat Chinese crawfish. They are notoriously contaminated (and taste horrible). Crawfish are cooked... -

ARCHIVED Crawfish, Crawdads, Crawfish
pricklypear1971 replied to CNV2855's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know what, I said earlier today that I wouldn't purposely gluten myself...but if it comes down to passing up boiled crawfish (or LA tails if I can get my hands on them here), I will. So there it is - my limit, my temptation. Funny, always thought it would be chocolate..... Btw I haven't had a problem with shrimp so far. When I buy them they are... -
ARCHIVED Boars Head Cc
pricklypear1971 replied to Pandamom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
At the Fry's deli I asked what else had been cut on the slicer and she simply asked if I wanted it cleaned. I said yes, and all was good. -
ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?
pricklypear1971 replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I don't know what the science says about untreated Celiac leading to Diabetes...but my genetic tests show me I am STRONGLY at risk of developing Diabetes. Now, that wouldn't scare me except that one of my blood tests shows "prediabetic". That test may be showing that result from my iron anemia - which us why I must work to get it straightened out... -
ARCHIVED Cold And Flu Season
pricklypear1971 replied to saintmaybe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yummy. I make a Thai -style chicken soup so the spice helps unstop my head. If you can find gluten-free hot and sour soup that works too! -
ARCHIVED Cold And Flu Season
pricklypear1971 replied to saintmaybe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So far I've used Tylenol Extra Strenghth for headache. I've used a Neti Pot for YEARS to relieve sinus and nose congestion. Much more effective than any drug. I also use cough drops, and drink herbal tea (mint/lemon), and make a whiskey/bourbon/honey/lemon/English Tea mix if needed to sleep. Sometimes I use Vicks VapoRub on my chest. I dont know... -
ARCHIVED Purposely Glutened
pricklypear1971 replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So far, no. My rash (or lack of it now) keeps me on the straight and narrow. I can understand the desire to indulge now and then if you can't see or feel the damage...human nature I guess. My skin rash and neuro symptoms are so severe I'm just not tempted. -
I know this is incredibly frustrating. Good news is they are looking at Lupus, which is on the autoimmune spectrum. Any chance they are sending you to a rheumatologist? Good chance a Rheumy will listen to you about Celiac and order the tests. And that doc must be on the pipe because chronic hives can do all sorts of things, including staying around...

ARCHIVED Salicylate Sensitivity--Help?
pricklypear1971 replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It is enough for me to stay away from preservatives and food colors. I think coconut bothers me a bit. I get stomach upset, used to get a DH flare, and neuro upset from them. Something in commercial bakery icing (filling) gives me the worst stomach cramps and D -the kind that makes you want to crawl in a hole and die. -

gluten-free bagel with ham and egg and a Dr. Pepper? I always want grease, caffeine, and sugar after one of those nights. -
ARCHIVED Struggling To Cope With Boyfriend's Mother
pricklypear1971 replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ok. Last post on this for me. Hypothetically, one is only as protected from a partner's relatives as that partner chooses to protect him/her. Same for children. Especially if the parents are no longer a couple - child custody arrangements, specifically. Adults can be exposed through their children. -
ARCHIVED Struggling To Cope With Boyfriend's Mother
pricklypear1971 replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah, but it isn't HER mother. Therefore, it's never her choice in the end. Look, this obviously isn't about this young lady....you have your experiences. I have mine. She will have hers. -
ARCHIVED Struggling To Cope With Boyfriend's Mother
pricklypear1971 replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We can agree to disagree on that one. You can attempt to choose, intend to choose, but in the end the fact that you are part of the same family (or related by children) opens you up to vulnerability. This is pointless to argue about. This young lady is perfectly capable of making her own judgements regarding the situation. -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know What I Like To Eat, Anymore.
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for trying to help and push me to try different things. Actually, I cook all the time. And I'm pretty decent at it (or so I've been told). I don't eat a lot of gluten-free processed foods - they are fatty, salty or sweet. The low-iodine thing really cut down on dairy and other things - I do use herbs, etc. to cook. I can't explain it -I... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know What I Like To Eat, Anymore.
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I used to eat everything, anything...4-star to street food. gluten-free bread leaves me cold. Greasy or heavy things are out - just can't do it. Salt is a turn off (however tonight soy sauce was SO GOOD). sweet is iffy -can't be too sweet or I get sick, especially if fat is involved. gluten-free pizza is rather unspectacular. Pasta is ok in small portions... -

ARCHIVED Genes !
pricklypear1971 replied to DVjorge's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are two main genes recognized in the western world -dq2 and dq8. There are another 13 implicated. I read a synopsis the other day that one is more specific to "activated" celiac than dq2, 8. There's constant research - and just because more have been identified doesn't necessarily mean more people carry the genes, it can also be more SPECIFIC identification... -
