Have you drastically reduced iodine and had positive results? I don't know of any other rash that responds to gluten/iodine withdrawal (if anyone does know of one I'd love to know). Iodine allergy responds to iodine... But that's easy to test for.

ARCHIVED Junior Mints
pricklypear1971 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, I'm posting this because I don't see it mentioned a lot and this is my "crutch" since going in a low-iodine diet and reducing dairy and excluding egg yolks. Junior Mints = love. No gluten ingredients, made in a gluten-free facility, no milk and eggs but may contain trace from cc. Good enough for me!!! When I'm feeling down and deprived... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing

Hmmm...I don't know if I'm THAT curious to know my risks for other diseases. Smart money is on knowing, but I find it a bit depressing right now. -
ARCHIVED Brand New Diagnosis!
pricklypear1971 replied to TeresaAnn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi there and welcome! First, everyone varies as far as recovery goes. The first few weeks (if not months) can be tough because most go through a type of detox. Many of us have issues like sub-optimal hormone levels, liver congestion, etc. Proper diet and supplamentation is key and it sounds like your doc is on it. One big caution for you, if you still... -
ARCHIVED Cosmetics & Gluten

I have started having problems with Devita skin care - which is "gluten sensitive", meaning they removed gluten from the wheat. I was fine for years, even first few mints off gluten. Now it bothers me. I think skin care is like food - it can change re: allergens/irritants. -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing

So you've done this, Josh? Does it tell you that you have a specific gene or just that you "are at risk", not naming a gene? -

Search for an online measurement converter. They are free and they work. -
ARCHIVED My Eyes!

My son is the same way. He's on Claritin. He didn't take it last night because he wasn't sniffly. Geez - that's because of the Claritin!! Silly boys. -

ARCHIVED My Eyes!
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, it's been a few days off Devita and on MyChelle. I probably am having some enviro allergies but my eyes feel much better off the Devita. Swelling is down, not so sensitive to light, don't hurt as much. Sigh. I loved that Devita. I'll never know if it's the gluten or something else in it but evidently it's gotta go. -
ARCHIVED Natural Flavors

Cheese aside, we need to remember there are people on this board (quite a few, actually) and site who are not in the U.S. Rules are different for other countries. I assume that's why it's on the list. Sometimes other countries have better rules, sometimes not. -
ARCHIVED King Arthur Gluten Free Mixes
pricklypear1971 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ok, just finished the Namaste bread. KA is like white Wonder bread (not as white and gluteny but you get my drift). Namaste is like Roman Meal. Both have nice rise and texture for gluten-free breads and are yummy out if the oven but KA is "white bread". Depends on what you like, I guess. -
Ha! I've thought of offering the same thing. gluten-free has helped. And now I feel well enough to exercise which will doubly help.

ARCHIVED King Arthur Gluten Free Mixes

I cut the cookie recipe in half and it was great. I cut the pancake recipe in half and it was a flop. Used the bread mix as-is from the box. -
ARCHIVED Natural Flavors
pricklypear1971 replied to MerrillC1977's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Because some natural flavoring, depending on what it is and where it was manufactured, can be gluten product derived. A lot of people seem to find "natural flavors" in things they react to - when all other ingredients are clean, and it is assumed "natural flavors" are the culprit. Personally, I avoid them because I have a problem with things like MSG... -
ARCHIVED Please Compare These Pictures Of My Hands With "normal"
pricklypear1971 replied to JoshB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hands are tough things to judge by sight. My husband has pretty ugly hands thanks to sports injuries.... Someone like a rheumatologist is a best bet for judging what's right or wrong with your hands. -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing
pricklypear1971 replied to Sam'sMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HLA-DQA1Marker:rs2187668 Celiac Disease occurs only in people with certain versions of an immune system protein called HLA-DQ. HLA proteins are encoded by a set of genes on chromosome 6. Together the genes are referred to as the "HLA region." Proteins from the HLA family are involved in the immune system's recognition of invaders. They are responsible for... -
ARCHIVED King Arthur Gluten Free Mixes
pricklypear1971 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use their flour mix and have tried their bread mix. I like the flour mix. It's great if you want a mix without salt (low iodine thing) and without xanthan gum. Compared to Pamela's I don't like it for pancakes. Hard to beat Pamela's for pancakes and I used the KA recipe on their website. I liked the bread. Much better than the awful frozen stiff... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing
pricklypear1971 replied to Sam'sMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had my ND order genetic testing through LabCorp- my insurance (PPO) will include the labs in my deductible but I still pay for them (since I haven't met my deductible) at the contracted rate. Don't have the bill yet. They won't pay for my ND visits since they don't include ND's on the plan. They also include any RX my ND writes and a pharmacy fills under... -

ARCHIVED Hi My Name Is Gina........
pricklypear1971 replied to jerseygirl221's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well, if you're celiac it's probably Dermatitis herpetiformis. There's a whole section on this board about it. In short, the Iga antibodies get in your skin and the sores/rash are an external expression of your gluten intolerance. If you want to test the rash and see if it acts like DH, go on a low-iodine diet in addition to the gluten-free diet. You can... -

ARCHIVED Cooking With Cast Iron Pans
pricklypear1971 replied to gaillynne's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Exactly! I honestly teared up thinking about this. Hilarious, isn't it? I can give up all sorts of things but I can't give up my iron skillet??? Southern females and iron skillets. A very deep relationship. We know each other. I can't bear the thought of scrubbing it down; although I know I could...then reseason. Would it work? I know some people pull...
