  1. I've never heard of wheat flour being used in the construction of pointe shoes. I'm trying to think how it would be utilized but just can't grasp how. Of course, ballet was a long time ago for me and I am not at all an expert about making pointe shoes but still...you've got the box, sole and shank plus ribbons and elastic. Could there be wheat flour in the...
  2. I'm so glad you didn't get really sick. I'm 4 months into the gluten-free lifestyle and I am paranoid about making this sort of mistake...being slightly distracted or busy and just popping something in my mouth without really thinking about it!
  3. I take Nature's Bounty Chewable Probiotic Acidophilus With Bifidum. I've tried a couple others but this one seems to work the best for me. Label says NO: artificial color, flavor or sweetener, preservatives, milk, lactose, soy, gluten, wheat yeast or fish. Also sodium free. Oh, and I like the taste (strawberry flavor)!
  4. I think just about everyone has a different answer. Depends on your symptoms, how long you've been ill before diagnosis, how your body heals, how good you are at sticking to the diet (I unknowingly ingested gluten at the beginning on more than 1 occasion...it is definitely a steep learning curve!), etc etc etc I'm 4 months post-Celiac diagnosis and I...
  5. I'm 4 months post-diagnosis and in the last week I've finally started having more good days than bad days. The first 3 months were really tough because I was being so careful (not even eating gluten-free replacement foods) and still had days where I felt awful. I am far from 100% but when I compare how I felt just prior to diagnosis to now I can see how I...
  6. I'm an American living in Poland. Food labeling is erm, hit or miss for a lot of the products I can find in the shops here. My one saving grace is we have a TESCO (yay! TESCO) and the labels seem to be much better in terms of possible allergens. These labels are on TESCO brand products. What I'm hoping someone from the UK might know -- if the TESCO...
  7. I just had someone here in Poland tell me that I shouldn't eat grain fed meat because it would cause a reaction. I'd never heard that before...and since grass fed meat is oh, gonna be just about impossible to find where I am I'm glad it isn't the case! It was hard enough finding 'organic' which in this case means a little old lady near my daughter's school...
  8. Oh, I'm storing it all up and will do a monster post to the Travel Forum here on the site so anyone who is thinking of coming to Krakow has an idea of how to survive. The Polish kitchen is so wheat and flour based it is daunting...and I've had so much trouble trying to get meat that doesn't make me sick (apparently the big shops put additives in the fresh...
  9. But if you are in Europe as I am maltodextrin is most often made from wheat but not necessarily labeled as such (I haven't found it labeled that way here in Poland!) Just to confuse us, right?!?! My understanding is some EU rules should go into effect in 2012 about food labeling for gluten but I'm not sure if that is actually going to happen or not. And...
  10. It sounds like this doctor has no real experience or knowledge of Celiac Disease or even auto-immune diseases. Can you stick with the 'new' doctor? If not, did you ask the 'old' doctor why you feel better and have improving symptoms since going gluten-free? If he says it is "all in your head" (I got that one from one of the docs I was seeing prior to diagnosis...
  11. I had brain fog, severe and rapid weight loss, achy joints (especially knees and ankles), horrible insomnia, anxiety plus GERD (reflux) and eventually abdominal pain which became severe and debilitating. None of my doctors wanted to believe it might be Celiac Disease because I didn't have the 'traditional' bloating, C and/or D, etc. They finally did the blood...
  12. As I head into my first gluten-free cold and flu season I am doing a final clean out of my medicine chest. I was happy to see that Cold Eeze and Airborne are both gluten-free as are Vick's products (have always been a huge fan of Nyquil liquicaps when I'm sick!) I think Mucinex said it was gluten-free also (have to go double-check that.) Just got...
  13. Oh no! Hope you are feeling better soon. I have a few things left in my freezer from pre-diagnosis but I'm only feeding it to the family as they are not all gluten free at this point (using the pans dedicated to gluteny foods to cook it.) But it has caught me short a couple of times...trying to remember if I can eat it or not!
  14. When I was diagnosed the doctor told me a minimum of 3 months gluten-free to start to see some sort of improvement...and that it could be 6-12 months for real improvement. I am 3.5 months in and things are definitely better (less pain, less brain fog, insomnia improving, less aching joints) but I'm far from 100%. Also, it hasn't been a steady improvement...
  15. So, was speaking with someone from General Mills this week and she told me that current company policy in terms of food labeling is as follows: If the ingredients are gluten free and they can confirm the "processing" (her word) did not include gluten ingredients (she meant cross contamination but didn't have the phrase until I mentioned it) they will now...
  16. I'm also 3 months into the gluten-free diet and if I forget to take my probiotic before eating I definitely notice the difference -- much more 'gut gurgle' as I call it.
  17. So glad to hear that you had a wonderful trip -- and how lucky was it to get those plane seats! Croatia is on my list of places to visit; not sure when but I'll get there someday.
  18. We lived in Uruguay for 2 years and they grilled every available bit of the cow there...I gotta say the intestines were what made me retch a bit. The host of the parilla we were at wouldn't leave me along until I tried them so I was game and took a bite. Big mistake since the texture just grossed me out...I think I turned a little green and the host backed...
  19. Not to mention he's got a website with a special area for 'members' -- you too can be a member if you want to cough up US$69 to join and then another US$12 PER month to stay. At least I think those were the prices when I came across him...He's on facebook and I liked his page early on when I was just learning about being gluten free (was in fact finding mode...
  20. Are you having the endoscopy to biopsy for Celiac disease? If so you must continue to eat gluten until the biopsy. If you are going to go gluten free for several weeks beforehand the results will be skewed. My bloodwork came back high positive but I had to continue eating gluten until the day of my scope (about 3 weeks later)...I considered it my swan song...
  21. Sounds like a great time! I'm only 3 months into the gluten-free diet and living in Poland where I've had some issues with meat (glutened from both chicken & turkey...food labeling is hit or miss as I have found out!) so I was leery of eating at another person's house, especially with all the flour that was going to be around (for the gravy, the pies...
  22. I developed sciatica during pregnancy and have had it flare up off and on ever since my daughter was born 10+ years ago. One thing that I try to do every day that seems to help (and this will sound crazy, I didn't believe the doctor who recommended it to me when he first told me to do it!) is roll up a bath towel and then lay down, usually in bed, with...
  23. We can't travel over this holiday season but are eyeing Italy in April next year. My daughter is dying to see Venice and with all the good things I've heard about how it is easy to eat gluten-free in Italy I'm excited about the trip!
  24. I've been using the hand cream from Andalou (Andalou Naturals?...it isn't in front of me so I can't remember exact name...) I like it as it is strong but doesn't leave my hands feeling greasy. I order it online but have found it at my local organic market. Once you order from them the first time online they will send you lots of email deals for 'sales' of...
  25. I found this list...like that it includes phone numbers so you can call and confirm for yourself. Open Original Shared Link
