ARCHIVED How Strict Do We Need To Be?
frenchiemama replied to radman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I never went through denial. I didn't like it, but I could clearly see the damage that gluten was doing to me physically. Since being diagnosed on April 21st of last year I have never once eaten gluten intentionally. In any case, comments like this "I have been surprised by how some treat it like an allergy-- making people change gloves, not allowing... -
Oh wait, can I add a mother in law quote? "Can't she just take some benadryl?"

I went to the doctor and a dermatologist for 2 straight years with my DH. They kept giving me more antibiotics and when those didn't work, the dermatologist said it was "Some kind of dermatitis. Here, use this soap." Then after that I went to a different doctor. She looked at my rash, then looked in my chart and said "Well, Dr. Dermatologist couldn't figure...

To me it just seems like you came on here with your mind already made up. Just my opinion. -

I'm not sure if very small amounts will cause long term problems, and frankly, you sound unwilling to believe it anyway. I'll just say that I "treat it like an allergy" because I don't like feeling sick and I don't like breaking out in a DH rash (aka living nightmare). I also get hives now and joint pain. I'm not sure why anyone would expose themselves to... -
ARCHIVED New Discovery! (for Me Anyway)
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I started to read it, but I'm too sleepy tonight. I only made it to page 3. I will read it tomorrow though, it looks very interesting. Thanks for posting it! Oh, and while I'm at it, do you know anything about the "spreadable" butter? It's butter mixed with canola oil so that it doesn't get so rock hard in the fridge. I tried it before, and I like it.... -
I have it on my hands, and I was wondering if anyone had any more tips about how to keep it in check. I replaced my wedding ring, that helped a lot, but I have to wash my hands about 50 million times a day at work and it really does a number on me. I have discovered that I can't use the lotion that is provided at the handwash stations at work, and I can't...

ARCHIVED New Discovery! (for Me Anyway)
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh, I'm sure it would be. I don't like the taste of splenda anyway. It's kinda icky. I do like to use smart balance, though, because it has less saturated fat. That's still good, right? (I always use the regular versions of everything anyway, why get something with all those fillers and thickeners in it? bleh) -
ARCHIVED New Discovery! (for Me Anyway)
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ok, thanks, but like I said I don't follow the diet. I am not on the south beach diet. I just like having quick snacks that I don't have to spend a half an hour to make or substitute ingredients that make it taste funny. I repeat, I am not on the south beach diet. -

I don't do the SBD, but I was suprised to find some SBD recipes that are gluten-free with no modification. I just made one and it is good! Here are two that I was given today, hopefully I can find more like this. They are easy and good. Danish in a bowl 1/2 c. lowfat cottage cheese 1 egg 1-2 tsp splenda 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp vanilla 1-2 tsp smart... -
I've eaten there gluten-free, it wasn't too bad. I do love the salad. My only complaint is that I flippin' hate cooked broccoli, and it's the only veggie that they have. Barf. Can't they get some green beans or something??

ARCHIVED How Can You Tell The Difference?
frenchiemama replied to MallysMama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
RE: Brainfog The best way that I can describe it is that I am in such a daze that I feel disconnected with what is going on around me. People say things to me and I don't completely understand. I have to read the same passage over and over again before it starts to make sense. I forget steps in a process that I am trying to do and end up just staring at... -
ARCHIVED Okay Now Im Really Confused...just When I Thought I Couldn't Get Any More Confused!

I don't know much about the lab work, but given your symptoms and the fact that you had one positive I would say that you probably have it. -
ARCHIVED How Can You Tell The Difference?
frenchiemama replied to MallysMama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can easily tell because: I get hot and sweaty I get very, very sleepy I get dizzy I break out in a rash and sometimes hives I get forgetful, to the point that I lock myself out of the house or forget where I am going in the car (I have been gluten-free for nearly a year) ETA: I have DH, and since about 5 months gluten-free, the ONLY time my... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill
frenchiemama replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a Mirena IUD. It beats the hell out of any other birth control I've tried (and I've tried a lot: mini-pill = ok, but failure rates are too high for my comfort; desogen = hungry and moody; ortho = nauseated ALL the time; ortho-lo = irregular periods; ortho evra (patch) = terrible skin irritation; nuvaring = the only thing I actually liked other than... -
I don't have a severe reaction like that to nickel, but I do react. I can't wear any kind of cheap jewelry, it gives me a rash. I also have dyshidrotic eczema on my hands. I can only wear 18k yellow gold for jewelry.

ARCHIVED Aloe Vera Gel

I have used aloe juice, but I can't say that I have ever seen gelcaps. The aloe juice works really well. -

ARCHIVED Wisconsin Celiacs Unite!
frenchiemama replied to frenchiemama's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
By R&D, do you mean CAP I and II? Do the ET majors have CAPII? Anyway, I've taken CAP I and to be perfectly honest it was hateful. It was a very stressful time, but we were also trying to design something that we had to build in CAP II. Knowing that we were going to have to try and build that monstrosity made it worse I think. I am nearly always the only... -
ARCHIVED Salmon Recipes
frenchiemama replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's my favorite: Angry Salmon 1 TB extra-virgin olive oil 1 lb fresh salmon fillets 1/2 cup prepared horseradish 4 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste Preheat oven to 400f. Rub the entire top surface of the salmon with 1 tsp of the oil, removing all bones. Salt and pepper, then lightly cover with plastic wrap and put in... -
ARCHIVED A1 Sauce
frenchiemama replied to momandgirls's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As far as I know, A1 is gluten-free. It is a kraft product and there are no gluten sources listed on the label. I personally eat it fairly frequently and have never had a reaction. -

You have to be effin' kidding me! I go to Stout for Manufacturing Engineering (only 3 classes left after this semester). I think I have met all the other female students in ME though, Erin, myself, Andrea, and Pauline (although I think there are some freshmen I'm not familiar with). Are you in ME or a different program? Did you go to the SWE meeting last... -
ARCHIVED Dapsone Intolerance Is Fixable?
frenchiemama replied to mshaw's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Nope, never tried flaxseed for the DH. I would really look into the tetracycline + B3 though, it really works for some people. My dermatologist said that she has used tetracycline for other skin conditions (pemphoid? is that it?) and it works for that, and she was amazed by how well it worked on my DH. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Use Antihistamin Drugs?
frenchiemama replied to elisabet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I take zyrtec for my allergies (dogs, dustmites, tree pollen, etc). I also use Nasonex spray. -
ARCHIVED Dapsone Intolerance Is Fixable?
frenchiemama replied to mshaw's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Bleh. No I haven't done that. Dapsone makes me very sick, I don't think I would be willing to go through the process described. Why don't you try an alternate treatment first? Try 500mg of tetracyline and 500mg of vitamin B3 2-3 times per day. It works for me, and in combination with clobesetal (sp) ointment I was very comfortable until my gluten-free diet...
