The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We'll take the tiramisu van to her house when we're done partying! I'm sure we could all learn some new things. It's noon and I still have no clue what's for dinner. I need to go shopping for a birthday present, my baby is going to be 16 next week. Maybe I'll just go to Wendy's and order the largest frosty they have with some fries to dip in it. -
I cleaned my waffle maker. I used paper towels and made sure I got into every nook and cranny of the thing. Like three times. I haven't gotten sick from waffles although to be perfectly honest I prefer pancakes and don't use it often.

Not that I have anything against guys in moo-moos but Richard may not be comfortable in one. Then again if you're finding your pants a little too tight go ahead and join us in uniform!

ARCHIVED What's For Breakfast Today?
Adalaide replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I can not find that here yet, but I keep looking. I can't wait to get my hands on a box. Today I'll "settle" for eggs, bacon and cheese on an arepa. Which I suppose I should get my butt in gear and make if I intend to have breakfast before the rugrat gets dropped off. -
ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening!
Adalaide replied to christianmom247's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That sounds heavenly Bart! I do have a totally gluten free grocery store about 40 minutes from home but who wants to drive 40 minutes to shop when I could spend less time out just by reading labels. It gets so annoying though and I just want to be able to walk in and buy stuff. I have to spend every trip to the store telling myself every label, every time... -

Made arepas this afternoon after work so I could have a chicken cheddar bacon ranch sandwich. I just went with the PAN brand and it's been a while and I feel fine so I'm guessing that I never had to be worried in the first place. (That CC warning on a package though is SO scary.) The arepas are so absolutely amazing. The could have been a little more... -
No? To her cooking in my kitchen? Tiramisu? If I said no to that you could lock me in the loony bin because I'd have to be completely off my rocker!

Holy crap, with this many people I'll have to make two! When? Well sorry guys but my birthday isn't until next year. I may have to celebrate my half-birthday next month.

I got super paranoid about colanders when I first saw what everyone here said. I realized after some time that they meant what I would call a strainer or sieve, that is wire mesh. Anything with the huge holes on it like that should be relatively easy to clean and keep. Not to feed your paranoia but since it's coated the possibility of it being scratched up...

You didn't lead me astray. Tiramisu did that all by itself. I don't think there's ever been another food as horrifically tempting and decadent. The very first gluten free recipe I googled was for lady fingers. Not pizza, or bread or anything else, my first thought was dear God.... don't take tiramisu from me. I "un-give-up" every year for my birthday...

ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
Adalaide replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
PB&J on yesterday's leftover pancakes. I was skeptical about it when I was making it but it's pretty darn good. I have a new jar of strawberry smoothie jam I picked up at a carnival Saturday night. (No worries, the lady who made it has a 5 yo celiac son.) Also some pistachio fluff. I just throw together a pack of pudding, some cool whip and some marshmallows... -
Learning to cook has been a challenge and I haven't really gone far enough yet to have ideas on many good portable foods. I do absolutely love Lara bars though, I almost cried when I had my first cherry pie one because it tastes like pie. They aren't particularly cheap but they're delicious. Tomorrow for work I'm taking PB&J made from leftover gluten...

ARCHIVED What's For Dessert Tonight?
Adalaide replied to sora's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been particularly lazy lately. Dessert tonight was a rare out of season cantaloupe and cottage cheese. (Which is also what I had for lunch.) -
The day I got the call with my diagnosis I cried. I went to bed and bawled. I whined about how hard it is, it's too much, I simply can't do it. I begged, pleaded and bargained with God for him to just make it all go away. I cried until I was physically ill. When I was done (which was after I cried myself to sleep and woke up feeling like I got whacked in...

I don't drink alcohol or coffee, I gave both up 5 years ago. But I'll be dead before I give up tiramisu. Now I think I need to make some again, I guess it's my turn to lose the pants.

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks, I'll check that out for some masa harina to make tortillas with. Sadly masa harina is not what is used for arepas, which is why I've become so frustrated. The stores all have tons of masa harina, but no masarepa. The only risk with PAN is from CC (which I've had issues with in the past with dried fruit) but apparently a lot of people on gluten free... -

Their brown rice flour I think. Maybe. Something like that. They don't roll as well as I remember tortillas rolling, but it worked out okay. I'm so frustrated with the whole masa harina thing... I decided I wanted arepas and while we have a huge latino population here all I can find is masa harina. The blog I read (from a gluten free blogger) suggested... -
ARCHIVED Icy Hot / Ben Gay
Adalaide replied to heidi b's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The number for BenGay is 800-223-0182. I have one of the zero degrees sticks next to me since I used it just a bit ago. Honestly, I haven't called them because I would be dependent on narcotics without it. If you could share whatever you find out that would be super. Honestly though, since it won't be on your hands or face (or you at least wash your hands... -
ARCHIVED How Did I Get Glutened!?!
Adalaide replied to CanineGluten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I know I'm just repeating, but it simply is not safe for celiacs to starve ourselves all day and binge in the evenings. We've suffered years of being malnourished and we simply can't get what we need to survive. We also can't afford to do things that will put us at risk of additional autoimmune diseases, one of which is diabetes. Binge eating can contribute... -

The obvious solution is not to wear pants! Boring as ever but for once a meal that both of us will eat, tacos. I have a few flour tortillas left so I'll be having soft tacos since I've never been a fan of hard shells anyway. -
ARCHIVED How To Overocome Frustration, Fear,
Adalaide replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have to second the thought that sometimes we are given hard things in order to help us become better people. When I look back on my life I see that through every hard thing I was given, I learned something valuable. This diagnosis is a struggle for us, and we go through so much that it can be hard to appreciate that it can be hard on friends and family... -
ARCHIVED Pharmacists--Ugh!
Adalaide replied to christianmom247's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What I meant is that I leave the doctor's office and come home, paper in hand, bringing home the written prescription. That's when I start making phone calls and if I'm lucky I can head to a pharmacy after only half an hour or so. -
ARCHIVED Contamination On Food Boxes
Adalaide replied to heidi b's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Since you won't be bringing any gluten into the house I don't see how it's anyone else's business. Honestly, how will they know? And frankly if you are in a wreck that is bad enough to cause your frozen meals to pop open and spill all over your car you have a lot more problems than gluten. I thought I was paranoid but holy crap... do they make you strip naked... -
ARCHIVED Pharmacists--Ugh!
Adalaide replied to christianmom247's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
After a handful of incidents of "well it doesn't look to me like any of the ingredients are wheat" I decided that pharmacists are not to be trusted. I bring every prescription home, do an online search, call pharmacies to see who the manufacturer is and then call the manufacturer. I failed once to do this and naturally came home with a gluteny medication...
