ARCHIVED Little Wins That Other People Don't Get
Adalaide replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It gets better Ron! My GI symptoms improved greatly over the 6ish months since my dx but it wasn't until I added the flax that have truly felt normal in that department. I'm so sorry that it ruined your marriage. It's a real jerk-detector and the people who have relationships that have endured are truly lucky. I hope you find at least some symptoms resolve... -

If you have an old cookbook laying around you could just use the meringue recipe from it. Or take your pick from googling meringue or lemon meringue. I add a touch of red wine vinegar for the flavor, I'm not sure I'd be a fan of the apple cider although any vinegar should technically work. I also plop it into little individual ones instead of making one huge... -

Why didn't I think of that? You could have stopped typing at pavlova. It is the most amazing, delectable, wonderful thing and ten times better than any old cake. The sort of thing where you take your first bite, close your eyes, sigh and wonder how you ever lived without knowing it exists. -
This is a great reminder about just how good we have it here. I'm happy for you that you're having such a great time. Since I had to recently give up ham and bacon you can just say you're eating my share so you feel less guilty.

Some days coping is just telling yourself over and over that they aren't maliciously trying to kill you with crumbs. Some days it's telling yourself that they aren't all stupid, they just don't know any better. Some days my attitude doesn't suck. I won't sugar coat it, it isn't easy, but it is doable. I put stickers on everything that is mine. I don...

ARCHIVED Need Help With Birthday Cake Alternative

I had had a box mix from Simply Organic for a carrot cake in my pantry. I made it after my most recent diagnosis so I'm sure it is nut and soy free, although I'm not sure on the corn or dairy status. I followed the pumpkin directions instead and added a bit extra in the way of spices and it was quite delicious. Pie is always great! I make pie crust using... -

So I was in the kitchen this morning with my husband. He was microwaving his last breakfast sandwich (yay!) and I was getting my morning cottage cheese, flax and fruit. I looked at him and said I should have started eating flax a long time ago and he asked why. I was like, I've never pooped so much like a normal human being in my life. I said this with a... -

After everyone going on and on about livers this just cracked me up. I'm a meatatarian but I won't touch liver. Ick! -
Hi and welcome. I'm glad you found us. There are plenty of ups and downs for all of us and we're all here to share the good and the bad. My six month mark is next Saturday so I'm still kind of newish to this but thanks to everyone here I was able to get pointed in the right direction and am doing pretty well compared to a year ago.

I haven't ever tried that although I absolutely love a steaming hot meatloaf slathered in mayo. Thanks mom! I really should try the fries dipped in it sometime. Fair trade coming out west though, I gave up my salt and vinegar fries for fry sauce. Since fry sauce is gluten free I'm thinking it was a good deal. -

I made my own mayo last night, yay! Making tuna salad today so I'll have a tuna melt on an arepa with fresh mozzarella. I think I'll have grilled tomatoes to go with it. I keep telling my husband to bring me a watermelon to grill but he keeps coming home empty handed and it isn't like I can drive until I have my vision back. I'd walk for it but I'm not carrying... -

I feel bad for you but I can't help but laugh too. This sounds exactly like the sort of thing I would do. We have them here and I keep almost buying them but they're SO EXPENSIVE. At least you know now your next box will last longer. -

Don't be sorry. It'll be a summer full of milkshakes that I can totally justify with flax. I'm gonna get so fat. -

Nope. I can have milk and dairy, they aren't a problem. The cultures and aging are the problem -
ARCHIVED Unusual Combinations

My weirdest one was probably with hot dogs. I'd line my bun with potato chips, put the hot dog in then slather it in baked beans. At holidays I'd always pile a mountain of mashed potatoes on my plated and make a well, fill it with corn then slather the whole thing with enough gravy to make my chest hurt now. My grandfather eats salt on all his... -

I'd love to put it in a smoothie, especially since they have become a way of life for me. I was having them because it was a fun way to have yogurt, but since I can't have yogurt I suppose I'm done with that. Oh well, the giganto-size tubs of cottage cheese are cheap at Costco. Lets just hope I don't use up all my apple butter before apples are ripe again... -

Cottage cheese with apple butter and flax. There is nothing quite like a healthy dessert to make you feel old. -

I used to be a smoker too. I was lucky to be able to share some insight at a recent meeting focused on dealing with having a family member who is an addict. (of any sort) I remember pointing out that at the time that I was smoking, nothing else mattered. I knew it was bad for me, I knew I might die, I knew all the horrid things that could happen before I... -
ARCHIVED What Are You Growing This Year?

IH, I grew up on a farm and if I find those worms in my tomatoes I'll probably scream like a terrified little girl. Snakes give me panic attacks. I make my husband kill my spiders. I can't even empty a mouse trap with a dead mouse in it. Some of are just born chicken. -

I grew up a farm girl, my immediate response to pests in the garden is to shoot them. If you're in the city maybe animal control could come catch them and take them away. I'm all for live and let live, but I won't let my food and hard work go to waste for some furball thief. -
Isn't it the worst watching someone you love more or less kill themselves? My husband is type 1 and doesn't carb count or correct properly all of the time. When he does, I'm not sure it matters. The doctor agrees that celiac could be causing a lot of his problems with lows and he's already had to be taken to the ER once for it when literally no amount of...

My grandmother died of cancer that may have been related to undiagnosed celiac. After a seven year battle she died. The last year of her life she pooped in a bag, weighed less than 100 pounds and kept loosing weight and was in constant pain. She died weighing less than 50 pounds in unimaginable pain. I really have no desire to die in pain with a poop sack... -

I'm going to throw my Costco chicken carcass on the stove this afternoon and turn it into chicken rice soup for supper. I'm completely off store bought stock and bouillon so for the first time the pressure is on to get the broth just right. (I've done it before but never under pressure.) I'll probably have more grilled lettuce with it instead of a regular... -

I've been getting plenty of little cherry tomatoes too. I planted all orange tomato plants with high hopes, but so far a single one of those babies hasn't made it in the house. My lettuce didn't fare too well after my neglect the day was at the neurologist and forgot about my plants. Everything else is looking beautiful, in another few days I should have... -

Everyone I'm related to by blood lives 1000 or 2000 miles away. I haven't let that stop me! My husband has had the blood tests which like mine came back negative, fortunately his doctor knows that means nothing. I was diagnosed by biopsy, but our insurance won't pay for an endoscopy and we just don't have the money for it. So instead I have finally after...
